Reversing Number Gender Rules

English changes book to books after nearly every number and leaves the numeral itself unchanged. Formal Modern Standard Arabic divides the teens and single digits into separate systems. A learner who remembers only “Arabic numbers reverse gender” will therefore produce one rule where Arabic has three: 3–10 show polarity, 11–12 show agreement, and 13–19 split the decision between two components.

The reusable repair is to identify the numerical range before choosing any ending. Then recover the counted noun's singular and its lexical gender, even when the Arabic noun printed in the final phrase will be plural. These patterns are standard in edited and prepared MSA (formal); many everyday varieties simplify them (regional: varies). Start with Numbers 3–10 and Gender Polarity if the first range is not yet automatic.

Four decisions, in order

  1. Identify the range: 3–10, 11–12, or 13–19.
  2. Recover the counted noun's singular and gender: كتب ← كتاب masculine; سيارات ← سيارة feminine.
  3. Apply the range's gender rule.
  4. Select the noun form: plural genitive after 3–10, but singular accusative after 11–19.

💡
Never ask “Is the number masculine or feminine?” Ask two narrower questions: “Which range am I in?” and “What is the singular noun's gender?” The visible plural often hides the information you need.

Common Mistakes

Six wrong-to-right repairs

1. Making 3–10 agree with a masculine noun

❌ استعرت ثلاث كتب من المكتبة المركزية.

Incorrect — singular كتاب is masculine, so three must take the opposite form ثلاثة; the noun remains plural genitive.

✅ استعرت ثلاثة كتب من المكتبة المركزية.

istaʿartu thalāthata kutubin mina l-maktabati l-markaziyya(h).

I borrowed three books from the central library.

2. Making 3–10 agree with a feminine noun

❌ استأجرت الشركة خمسة سيارات للحملة.

Incorrect — singular سيارة is feminine, so five uses the opposite form خمس.

✅ استأجرت الشركة خمس سيارات للحملة الإعلانية.

istaʾjarati sh-sharikatu khamsa sayyārātin lil-ḥamlati l-ʾiʿlāniyya(h).

The company rented five cars for the advertising campaign.

3. Leaving the noun singular after 3–10

❌ أرسلت سبعة تقرير إلى الإدارة.

Incorrect — after 3–10 the counted noun must be plural genitive, here تقارير.

✅ أرسلت سبعة تقارير إلى الإدارة قبل الظهر.

ʾarsaltu sabʿata taqārīra ʾilā l-ʾidārati qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.

I sent seven reports to management before noon.

تقاريرَ is genitive even though it shows fatḥa: it is a diptote broken plural. The ending is noun declension, not a failure of the 3–10 rule.

4. Extending polarity to eleven

❌ شاركت إحدى عشر موظفا في ورشة الأمن.

Incorrect — eleven agrees in both components with masculine موظف: أحد عشر.

✅ شارك أحد عشر موظفا في ورشة الأمن الرقمي.

shāraka ʾaḥada ʿashara muwaẓẓafan fī warshati l-ʾamni r-raqamiyy.

Eleven employees took part in the digital-security workshop.

5. Forgetting agreement in the second part of twelve

❌ افتتحت اثنتا عشر جامعة مركزا جديدا.

Incorrect — feminine جامعة requires feminine عشرة as well as nominative اثنتا.

✅ افتتحت اثنتا عشرة جامعة مراكز بحثية جديدة.

iftataḥati thnatā ʿashrata jāmiʿatan marākiza baḥthiyyatan jadīda(h).

Twelve universities opened new research centers.

The whole number phrase is the subject, so اثنتا is nominative. The counted noun جامعةً is nevertheless singular accusative.

6. Applying one gender rule to both parts of 13–19

❌ حضر ثلاث عشرة طالبا إلى المختبر.

Incorrect — with masculine طالب, the unit shows polarity as ثلاثة while عشر agrees without ـة.

✅ حضر ثلاثة عشر طالبا إلى المختبر في الموعد.

ḥaḍara thalāthata ʿashara ṭāliban ʾilā l-mukhtabari fī l-mawʿid.

Thirteen students arrived at the laboratory on time.

Minimal contrast 1: polarity depends on the singular

عقدنا أربعة اجتماعات خلال أسبوع واحد.

ʿaqadnā ʾarbaʿata jtimāʿātin khilāla ʾusbūʿin wāḥid.

We held four meetings in one week. (Singular اجتماع is masculine, so أربعة.)

عقدنا أربع جلسات خلال أسبوع واحد.

ʿaqadnā ʾarbaʿa jalsātin khilāla ʾusbūʿin wāḥid.

We held four sessions in one week. (Singular جلسة is feminine, so أربع.)

Both printed nouns are plural. The choice between أربعة and أربع comes from the hidden singular dictionary forms اجتماع and جلسة.

Minimal contrast 2: ten versus eleven

استمرت التجربة عشرة أيام كاملة.

istamarrati t-tajribatu ʿasharata ʾayyāmin kāmila(h).

The experiment lasted ten full days. (Polarity plus plural genitive.)

استمرت التجربة أحد عشر يوما كاملا.

istamarrati t-tajribatu ʾaḥada ʿashara yawman kāmilā.

The experiment lasted eleven full days. (Agreement plus singular accusative.)

The boundary at eleven changes both gender behavior and the counted noun. English days conceals that reset.

Twelve has a separate case repair

Eleven and 13–19 keep the same compound shape across syntactic cases. Twelve alone shows a dual-like distinction in its first component: nominative اثنا/اثنتا, accusative and genitive اثني/اثنتي.

وصل اثنا عشر خبيرا للمراجعة النهائية.

waṣala thnā ʿashara khabīran lil-murājaʿati n-nihāʾiyya(h).

Twelve experts arrived for the final review. (Nominative twelve.)

قابلت اثني عشر خبيرا خلال المؤتمر.

qābaltu thnay ʿashara khabīran khilāla l-muʾtamar.

I met twelve experts during the conference. (Accusative twelve.)

تحدثت مع اثنتي عشرة خبيرة بشأن النتائج.

taḥaddathtu maʿa thnatay ʿashrata khabīratan bi-shaʾni n-natāʾij.

I spoke with twelve female experts about the results. (Genitive position; feminine oblique twelve.)

The specification stays accusative خبيرا/خبيرةً in all three. The preposition governs the number phrase, not the counted noun directly.

The split rule in 13–19

For masculine nouns, the unit has ـة and ten is عشر. For feminine nouns, the unit lacks ـة and ten is عشرة.

استقبل المتحف خمسة عشر زائرا في الساعة الأولى.

istaqbala l-matḥafu khamsata ʿashara zāʾiran fī s-sāʿati l-ʾūlā.

The museum received fifteen visitors in the first hour.

تلقت المكتبة خمس عشرة هدية من القراء.

talaqqati l-maktabatu khamsa ʿashrata hadiyyatan mina l-qurrāʾ.

The library received fifteen gifts from readers.

The ـة appears on opposite-looking components, but the logic is stable: unit opposite, ten agreeing. Eighteen before a feminine noun preserves the irregular unit ثماني: ثماني عشرة دقيقة. There is no honest shortcut that removes that lexical irregularity.

Legitimate lookalikes

The form with ـة is not inherently “the feminine numeral.” Under 3–10 polarity, ثلاثة is precisely the form used with masculine كتاب, while bare ثلاث is used with feminine سيارة. At 11–12, however, both parts agree, so إحدى عشرة and اثنتا عشرة accompany feminine nouns.

Digits do not neutralize grammar. In زار الوفد ١٢ مدرسة, the number is read اثنتي عشرة because the phrase is a direct object and مدرسة is feminine. Right-to-left layout also does not reverse ١٢ into 21.

Editing a paragraph

❌ استضاف المركز ثلاث عشرة خبيرا وإحدى عشر خبيرة. استمرت الدورة خمسة أيام، وراجع المشاركون سبع تقرير.

Incorrect — the paragraph reverses the 13–19 split, misgenders eleven, agrees five instead of using polarity, and leaves the noun singular after seven.

✅ استضاف المركز ثلاثة عشر خبيرا وإحدى عشرة خبيرة. استمرت الدورة خمسة أيام، وراجع المشاركون سبعة تقارير.

istaḍāfa l-markazu thalāthata ʿashara khabīran wa-ʾiḥdā ʿashrata khabīra(h). istamarrati d-dawratu khamsata ʾayyāmin, wa-rājaʿa l-mushārikūna sabʿata taqārīr.

The center hosted thirteen male experts and eleven female experts. The course lasted five days, and the participants reviewed seven reports.

Every repair begins from the counted noun: masculine خبير, feminine خبيرة, masculine يوم, masculine تقرير. Only then does the numerical range choose the visible forms.

Repair procedure

  1. Write the number's range above the phrase.
  2. Restore the counted noun's singular and mark its lexical gender.
  3. For 3–10, reverse the numeral's gender and use a plural genitive noun.
  4. For 11–12, make both numeral parts agree and use a singular accusative noun; check twelve's case.
  5. For 13–19, reverse only the unit, make عشر/عشرة agree, and use a singular accusative noun.
  6. Check irregular eight separately: ثماني ساعات، ثماني عشرة ساعة.

Key Takeaways

  • “Arabic numbers reverse gender” is true only as part of the 3–10 and 13–19 systems.
  • After 3–10, use a plural genitive noun; after 11–19, use a singular accusative specification.
  • Eleven and twelve agree in both components; twelve's first component changes for case.
  • In 13–19, the unit shows polarity and the ten component agrees.
  • Always recover the counted noun's singular gender before judging the numeral.
