Translating English Verb–Preposition Pairs Word for Word

English speakers often learn a verb and then translate its neighboring preposition separately: listen + to, answer + Ø, depend + on. Arabic does not preserve that assembly. Each verb selects a complement frame of its own: استمع إلى “listen to,” أجاب عن “answer,” and اعتمد على “depend on.” This lexical selection is called government.

The recurring cause is not ignorance of what إلى or عن means in isolation. It is treating a bilingual gloss as if it specified Arabic syntax. A repair therefore has two stages: identify the intended relationship, then retrieve the whole Arabic frame—verb plus direct object or selected preposition—before adding the complement.

The broader reference page Verb–Preposition Government catalogs the system; this page concentrates on diagnosing and repairing English-driven transfer.

Store frames, not translated strings

The same English surface pattern may map to several Arabic structures:

English promptArabic frameComplement role
listen toاستمع إلىsound or speaker
answerأجاب عنquestion or inquiry
discussناقش + direct objecttopic discussed
wait forانتظر + direct objectperson or event awaited
participate inشارك فيevent or activity
rely onاعتمد علىbasis or resource

There is no reliable rule that English to becomes إلى or English for becomes لـ. The governing Arabic word determines the structure.

The table gives dependable neutral defaults, not an exhaustive ban on every alternative attested in edited Arabic. In particular, استمع is also established with a direct object and with لـ: استمع الكلام، استمع للكلام. With a lecture or recording, استمع إلى is the safest cross-regional default; استمع على is not the frame for this meaning. A serious correction must distinguish a real government error from a recognized variant.

💡
Write a new verb on a vocabulary card as أجاب عن سؤال / أجاب عنه, not merely أجاب = answer. The noun example records the meaning; the suffix example proves that you know the frame.

Six direct repairs

English “listen to” does not license على

❌ استمعنا على المحاضرة المسجلة باهتمام.

Incorrect — استمع selects إلى before the sound or speaker.

✅ استمعنا إلى المحاضرة المسجلة باهتمام.

istamaʿnā ʾilā l-muḥāḍarati l-musajjalati bi-htimām.

We listened attentively to the recorded lecture.

English “answer” hides Arabic عن

❌ أجابت الباحثة إلى السؤال الأخير بدقة.

Incorrect — أجاب governs the question with عن, not إلى.

✅ أجابت الباحثة عن السؤال الأخير بدقة.

ʾajābati l-bāḥithatu ʿani s-suʾāli l-ʾakhīri bi-diqqa(h).

The researcher answered the final question precisely.

English “discuss about” must lose the preposition

❌ ناقش الفريق عن أسباب التأخير.

Incorrect — ناقش normally takes the topic as a direct object, not with عن.

✅ ناقش الفريق أسباب التأخير في اجتماعه الصباحي.

nāqasha l-farīqu ʾasbāba t-taʾkhīri fī jtimāʿihi ṣ-ṣabāḥiyy.

The team discussed the reasons for the delay at its morning meeting.

English “wait for” must lose لـ

❌ انتظرنا للحافلة أمام المحطة.

Incorrect in neutral MSA for ‘we waited for the bus’ — انتظر takes the awaited entity directly.

✅ انتظرنا وصول الحافلة أمام المحطة.

intaẓarnā wuṣūla l-ḥāfilati ʾamāma l-maḥaṭṭa(h).

We waited for the bus to arrive in front of the station.

English “participate to” does not predict إلى

❌ شارك ممثلو المدارس إلى ورشة التخطيط.

Incorrect — an event participated in follows شارك with في.

✅ شارك ممثلو المدارس في ورشة التخطيط.

shāraka mumaththilū l-madārisi fī warshati t-takhṭīṭ.

The school representatives participated in the planning workshop.

English “depend of” or “depend from” still maps to على

❌ يعتمد نجاح المشروع من تعاون الأقسام.

Incorrect — the basis on which something depends follows اعتمد with على.

✅ يعتمد نجاح المشروع على تعاون الأقسام المختلفة.

yaʿtamidu najāḥu l-mashrūʿi ʿalā taʿāwuni l-ʾaqsāmi l-mukhtalifa(h).

The project's success depends on cooperation among the different departments.

These are lexical errors, not merely wrong translations of six prepositions. The correction changes what type of complement the Arabic verb licenses.

Two minimal contrasts: both grammatical, different meanings

A preposition error sometimes produces a valid Arabic sentence. In that case a red “ungrammatical” label would hide the real danger: the reader receives a different proposition.

بحثت الموظفة عن الملف في الأرشيف.

baḥathati l-muwaẓẓafatu ʿani l-malafi fī l-ʾarshīf.

The employee looked for the file in the archive.

بحثت الموظفة في الملف قبل الاجتماع.

baḥathati l-muwaẓẓafatu fī l-malafi qabla l-ijtimāʿ.

The employee examined the file before the meeting. (formal)

بحث عن seeks a missing or desired entity; بحث في investigates a topic or examines material. English search for and research happen to signal the contrast here, but the Arabic frames must still be learned independently.

اعتمد المجلس الخطة الجديدة بعد التصويت.

iʿtamada l-majlisu l-khuṭṭata l-jadīdata baʿda t-taṣwīt.

The council adopted the new plan after the vote.

اعتمد المجلس على الخطة القديمة عند إعداد الميزانية.

iʿtamada l-majlisu ʿalā l-khuṭṭati l-qadīmati ʿinda ʾiʿdādi l-mīzāniyya(h).

The council relied on the old plan when preparing the budget.

Direct اعتمد شيئا means “adopted/approved something”; اعتمد على شيء means “relied on something.” Adding على is not harmless padding.

Roles explain some alternations

One verb may select different frames for different semantic participants. With اتفق, use مع for the other party and على for the agreed matter:

اتفقت المديرة مع المورد على موعد جديد للتسليم.

ittafaqati l-mudīratu maʿa l-muwarridi ʿalā mawʿidin jadīdin li-t-taslīm.

The manager agreed with the supplier on a new delivery date.

Similarly, سأل شخصا عن موضوع has a direct object for the person asked and عن for the topic:

سألت الطبيبة المريض عن الأدوية التي يتناولها.

saʾalati ṭ-ṭabībatu l-marīḍa ʿani l-ʾadwiyati llatī yatanāwaluhā.

The doctor asked the patient about the medicines he takes.

English often uses ask before both a person and a question, but Arabic morphology exposes two roles. A good lexical entry therefore includes participant structure, not only a preposition.

The repair algorithm

  1. State the intended relationship without reusing the English preposition. Is someone seeking an entity, examining a topic, listening to a sound, or approving a plan?
  2. Retrieve the Arabic lemma and one attested frame. Choose بحث عن or بحث في, not bare بحث plus a guessed particle.
  3. Identify the complement type. It may be a direct noun, prepositional noun, verbal noun, or أن clause.
  4. Check for a meaning-changing alternation. Compare direct اعتمد with اعتمد على.
  5. Test a suffix form. If أجاب عنه sounds structurally complete, it confirms أجاب عن.
  6. Only then build relatives or coordination. Resumptive suffixes preserve the selected frame; they do not choose it.
💡
A spatial story can help memory—إلى points toward a listening target, for example—but it cannot license a new combination. Verify conventional usage in a reliable Arabic dictionary or edited corpus.

Mixed diagnostic set

The following sentences test direct objects, correct government, and grammatical meaning shifts.

ينتظر الركاب إعلان رقم البوابة.

yantaẓiru r-rukkābu ʾiʿlāna raqmi l-bawwāba(h).

The passengers are waiting for the gate number to be announced. Correct: انتظر takes a direct object.

ستنظر اللجنة في الاعتراض خلال عشرة أيام.

satanẓuru l-lajnatu fī l-iʿtirāḍi khilāla ʿasharati ʾayyām.

The committee will consider the objection within ten days. Correct: نظر في means ‘consider/examine.’

نظر الطفل إلى الطائرة حتى اختفت.

naẓara ṭ-ṭiflu ʾilā ṭ-ṭāʾirati ḥattā khtafat.

The child looked at the airplane until it disappeared. Correct: نظر إلى marks the visual target.

❌ ساهمت المؤسسة إلى تمويل المكتبة الجديدة.

Incorrect — the process or result contributed to follows ساهم with في.

The two نظر sentences are both grammatical because إلى and في select different readings. The ساهم sentence is a transfer error: English contribute to does not determine Arabic إلى.

Editing a paragraph

Consider a draft assembled from English collocations:

❌ استمع أعضاء اللجنة على العرض، ثم ناقشوا عن المقترح وأجابوا إلى الأسئلة واعتمدوا من تقرير سابق.

Incorrect — the paragraph contains four mismatched complement frames.

✅ استمع أعضاء اللجنة إلى العرض، ثم ناقشوا المقترح وأجابوا عن الأسئلة واعتمدوا على تقرير سابق.

istamaʿa ʾaʿḍāʾu l-lajnati ʾilā l-ʿarḍi, thumma nāqashū l-muqtaraḥa wa-ʾajābū ʿani l-ʾasʾilati wa-ʿtamadū ʿalā taqrīrin sābiq.

The committee members listened to the presentation, then discussed the proposal, answered the questions, and relied on an earlier report.

The edit restores four lexical entries: استمع إلى، ناقش شيئا، أجاب عن، اعتمد على. Notice that no single English-to-Arabic preposition table could have produced the result.

Common Mistakes

Translating the English particle after “think about”

❌ نفكر عن نقل المكتب إلى مبنى أصغر.

Incorrect — consideration of an idea or possible action follows فكر with في.

✅ نفكر في نقل المكتب قرب محطة القطار.

nufakkiru fī naqli l-maktabi qurba maḥaṭṭati l-qiṭār.

We are considering moving the office near the train station.

Copying English “to” after اتصل

❌ اتصلت إلى مسؤول الدعم صباحا.

Incorrect — اتصل takes بـ for the person contacted.

✅ اتصلت بمسؤول الدعم وشرحت له المشكلة.

ittaṣaltu bi-masʾūli d-daʿmi wa-sharaḥtu lahu l-mushkila(h).

I contacted the support officer and explained the problem to him.

Treating two grammatical frames as synonyms

❌ اعتمدت الإدارة على اللائحة، والمقصود أنها أقرتها رسميا.

Wrong frame for the stated meaning — اعتمد على means ‘relied on,’ not ‘formally adopted.’

✅ اعتمدت الإدارة اللائحة الجديدة بعد المراجعة القانونية.

iʿtamadati l-ʾidāratu l-lāʾiḥata l-jadīdata baʿda l-murājaʿati l-qānūniyya(h).

The administration adopted the new regulations after legal review.

Changing the preposition when the complement becomes a pronoun

❌ هذه المسألة التي أجبت إليها بالتفصيل.

Incorrect — pronominalization preserves the selected عن frame, not إلى.

✅ هذه المسألة التي أجبت عنها بالتفصيل في المذكرة.

hādhihi l-masʾalatu llatī ʾajabtu ʿanhā bi-t-tafṣīli fī l-mudhakkira(h).

This is the issue that I addressed in detail in the memorandum.

Key Takeaways

  • English verb–preposition combinations do not predict Arabic government.
  • Learn a complete lexical frame, its complement role, and a suffix form.
  • Arabic may add a preposition where English has none (أجاب عن) or use a direct object where English has one (انتظر، ناقش).
  • A changed preposition can create a new meaning rather than an ungrammatical sentence.
  • Repair meaning first, frame second, and resumptive or attached pronoun last.
