Leaving an English-Style Gap after a Preposition in Relatives

English can move a relative expression to the front—or omit it—and leave its preposition behind: “the colleague who I worked with .” Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic does not normally build that structure. A preposition such as مع، عن، على، إلى، في must have a complement, so the ordinary repair is an attached pronoun that refers back to the antecedent: الزميل الذي عملت معه.

This is not a matter of translating an extra English pronoun. Arabic is completing the prepositional phrase inside the relative clause. The attached element is a resumptive suffix: ـه for a masculine singular antecedent, ـها for a feminine singular or nonhuman plural antecedent, ـهما for a dual, and so on. The underlying English transfer pressure is reusable: whenever English permits “preposition + empty slot,” inspect the Arabic preposition and restore its object.

The structural repair

Start from the clause without relativization. عملت مع الزميلة means “I worked with the colleague.” When الزميلة becomes the antecedent, it leaves its semantic role inside the clause, but Arabic expresses that role with ـها:

❌ هذه المستشارة التي عملت مع طوال الصيف.

Incorrect — مع has been stranded with no complement.

✅ هذه المستشارة التي عملت معها طوال الصيف تعرف المشروع جيدا.

hādhihi l-mustashāratu llatī ʿamiltu maʿahā ṭawāla ṣ-ṣayfi taʿrifu l-mashrūʿa jayyidā.

This consultant, whom I worked with all summer, knows the project well.

The relative pronoun التي and the suffix ـها do different work. التي links a definite feminine antecedent to the relative clause; ـها supplies the object required by مع inside that clause. English who appears only once, but the Arabic architecture needs both links.

For the full agreement inventory beyond this repair lesson, see Resumptive Pronouns inside Relative Clauses.

💡
Reconstruct the plain clause first: تعاونت مع المؤسسة. Replace the repeated noun with its suffix: تعاونت معها. Only then attach the clause to the definite antecedent: المؤسسة التي تعاونت معها.

Six high-frequency gap repairs

The repair applies to simple prepositions, compound expressions, people, things, and places. The suffix agrees with the antecedent, not with the nearest noun.

❌ هذه هي القضية التي تحدثنا عن أمس.

Incorrect — عن needs an object referring back to القضية.

✅ هذه هي القضية التي تحدثنا عنها أمس في نهاية الجلسة.

hādhihi hiya l-qaḍiyyatu llatī taḥaddathnā ʿanhā ʾamsi fī nihāyati l-jalsa(h).

This is the issue we spoke about yesterday at the end of the session.

❌ أين التقرير الذي اعتمدت اللجنة على؟

Incorrect — على cannot stand without the resumptive suffix.

✅ أين التقرير الذي اعتمدت اللجنة عليه؟

ʾayna t-taqrīru lladhī ʿtamadati l-lajnatu ʿalayhi?

Where is the report that the committee relied on?

❌ قابلت الباحثين اللذين أرسلت النتائج إلى.

Incorrect — the dual antecedent requires إليهما inside the clause.

✅ قابلت الباحثين اللذين أرسلت النتائج إليهما.

qābaltu l-bāḥithayni lladhayni ʾarsaltu n-natāʾija ʾilayhimā.

I met the two researchers to whom I sent the results.

❌ هذه الأجهزة التي لا نستطيع العمل بدون.

Incorrect — بدون needs a feminine singular suffix for the nonhuman plural أجهزة.

✅ هذه الأجهزة التي لا نستطيع العمل بدونها.

hādhihi l-ʾajhizatu llatī lā nastaṭīʿu l-ʿamala bidūnihā.

These are the devices that we cannot work without.

❌ وجدت مكتبا يمكننا عقد الاجتماع في.

Incorrect — the indefinite antecedent does not take الذي, but في still requires a resumptive suffix.

✅ وجدت مكتبا يمكننا عقد الاجتماع فيه.

wajadtu maktaban yumkinunā ʿaqdu l-ijtimāʿi fīhi.

I found an office in which we can hold the meeting.

❌ هذه المبادرة التي نعمل من أجل منذ أشهر.

Incorrect — the compound expression من أجل must end in a resumptive suffix.

✅ هذه المبادرة التي نعمل من أجلها منذ أشهر.

hādhihi l-mubādaratu llatī naʿmalu min ʾajlihā mundhu ʾashhur.

This is the initiative that we have been working for over the past several months.

The fifth pair is especially important. An indefinite antecedent such as مكتبا takes a descriptive clause directly, without الذي. That does not license a gap after في. Relative-pronoun choice and resumptive choice are separate decisions.

Some learner outputs are simply incomplete; others are grammatical Arabic with the wrong meaning. Diagnose before correcting.

هذا هو المدير الذي سألت عنه.

hādhā huwa l-mudīru lladhī saʾaltu ʿanhu.

This is the director I asked about.

هذا هو المدير الذي سألته عن الموعد.

hādhā huwa l-mudīru lladhī saʾaltuhu ʿani l-mawʿid.

This is the director whom I asked about the appointment.

In the first sentence, the director is the topic governed by عن. In the second, ـه is the direct object of سأل, while عن الموعد names what was asked about. Deleting ـه from the second sentence would not strand عن; it would remove the grammatical link between المدير and the clause.

هذا هو القرار الذي اعتمدناه أمس.

hādhā huwa l-qarāru lladhī ʿtamadnāhu ʾams.

This is the decision that we adopted yesterday.

هذا هو القرار الذي اعتمدنا عليه في التخطيط.

hādhā huwa l-qarāru lladhī ʿtamadnā ʿalayhi fī t-takhṭīṭ.

This is the decision that we relied on in planning.

Here direct اعتمد القرار means “adopted the decision,” whereas اعتمد على القرار means “relied on the decision.” The suffix cannot be repaired until the Arabic verb frame—and therefore the intended meaning—is settled.

What English pied-piping becomes in Arabic

Formal English can avoid stranding by saying “the colleague with whom I worked.” The normal Arabic equivalent still keeps the relative pronoun at the clause edge and places the complete prepositional phrase inside: الزميل الذي عملت معه. Do not imitate English by placing مع directly before الذي after an antecedent.

Arabic can front the complete prepositional phrase within the relative clause for contrastive or elevated effect (formal/literary):

هذا هو الشريك الذي معه بدأت المشروع، لا الشريك الذي انضم لاحقا.

hādhā huwa sh-sharīku lladhī maʿahu badaʾtu l-mashrūʿa, lā sh-sharīku lladhī nḍamma lāḥiqā.

This is the partner with whom I started the project, not the partner who joined later. (contrastive formal order)

The fronted unit is معه, not bare مع and not مع الذي. Neutral prose would normally use الذي بدأت المشروع معه. Fronting changes information structure; it does not remove the suffix.

A repair algorithm for unseen sentences

  1. Complete the antecedent phrase. Decide whether it is definite and choose the relative architecture independently.
  2. Rebuild the clause without relativization. For example: تحدثنا عن الخطة.
  3. Identify the Arabic governor. Here تحدث عن selects عن; English talk about is only a clue, not proof.
  4. Replace the antecedent with the matching suffix. عن الخطة → عنها.
  5. Check gender and number. Nonhuman plurals normally resume with feminine singular ـها; duals use ـهما.
  6. Read the result for meaning. A different preposition may create a grammatical but unintended sense.
💡
Never repair a stranded preposition by suffix alone until you have verified the verb frame. بحث عنه means “looked for it,” while بحث فيه means “examined it.” Both are complete; only context chooses between them.

Mixed diagnostic set

Classify each sentence as complete, incomplete, or grammatical with a different reading.

وصلت الرسالة التي كنا ننتظرها.

waṣalati r-risālatu llatī kunnā nantaẓiruhā.

The message we had been waiting for arrived. Complete: انتظر takes a direct object.

هذا الملف الذي بحثنا فيه طوال الصباح.

hādhā l-malaffu lladhī baḥathnā fīhi ṭawāla ṣ-ṣabāḥ.

This is the file whose contents we examined all morning. Complete, with بحث في.

هذا الملف الذي بحثنا عنه طوال الصباح.

hādhā l-malaffu lladhī baḥathnā ʿanhu ṭawāla ṣ-ṣabāḥ.

This is the file we looked for all morning. Complete, but with a different meaning.

❌ هؤلاء هم الخبراء الذين استمعنا إلى في الندوة.

Incomplete — إلى has no object; use إليهم for the plural human antecedent.

Editing a paragraph

An English-shaped draft often repeats the same hidden operation several times:

❌ هذا هو البرنامج الذي تحدثنا عن، والمورد الذي نعتمد على، والفريق الذي نعمل مع.

Incorrect — three coordinated relative clauses each strand their selected preposition.

✅ هذا هو البرنامج الذي تحدثنا عنه، والمورد الذي نعتمد عليه، والفريق الذي نعمل معه.

hādhā huwa l-barnāmaju lladhī taḥaddathnā ʿanhu, wa-l-muwarridu lladhī naʿtamidu ʿalayhi, wa-l-farīqu lladhī naʿmalu maʿahu.

This is the program we discussed, the supplier we rely on, and the team we work with.

The edit is not “add ـه everywhere.” It restores three verified frames: تحدث عن، اعتمد على، عمل مع. Each masculine singular antecedent then supplies ـه to the selected preposition.

Common Mistakes

Treating the relative pronoun as the preposition's object

❌ قرأت التقرير الذي أشرت إلى في رسالتك.

Incorrect — الذي introduces the clause but does not complete إلى inside it.

✅ قرأت التقرير الذي أشرت إليه في رسالتك.

qaraʾtu t-taqrīra lladhī ʾasharta ʾilayhi fī risālatika.

I read the report that you referred to in your message. (Addressing one man.)

Using singular masculine ـه for a feminine antecedent

❌ هذه القضية التي اختلفنا بشأنه.

Incorrect — the suffix must agree with feminine singular القضية.

✅ هذه القضية التي اختلفنا بشأنها ما زالت مفتوحة.

hādhihi l-qaḍiyyatu llatī khtalafnā bishaʾnihā mā zālat maftūḥa(h).

This issue about which we disagreed is still open.

❌ نحتاج إلى قاعة نستطيع التدريب في.

Incorrect — omitting الذي is right after indefinite قاعة, but في still needs ـها.

✅ نحتاج إلى قاعة نستطيع التدريب فيها مساء.

naḥtāju ʾilā qāʿatin nastaṭīʿu t-tadrība fīhā masāʾ.

We need a hall in which we can train in the evening.

Repairing the suffix but keeping the English preposition

❌ هذا هو السؤال الذي أجبت إليه.

Incorrect — the suffix completes the phrase, but standard أجاب selects عن for a question.

✅ هذا هو السؤال الذي أجبت عنه في المقابلة.

hādhā huwa s-suʾālu lladhī ʾajabtu ʿanhu fī l-muqābala(h).

This is the question that I answered in the interview.

Key Takeaways

  • English preposition stranding maps to a complete Arabic prepositional phrase with a resumptive suffix.
  • الذي/التي introduces a definite relative clause; it does not serve as the object of a later preposition.
  • An indefinite adjective clause omits the relative pronoun but retains required prepositional and possessive resumptives.
  • Reconstruct the plain Arabic clause and verify its lexical government before choosing the suffix.
  • A grammatical frame such as بحث فيه may still be wrong for an intended meaning such as “looked for it,” so test semantics as well as completeness.
