English does not alter the lexical verb in he calls / he did not call / call!, so English speakers often preserve the final weak letter of Arabic يدعو، يرمي، يسعى everywhere. Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal) instead marks the jussive of a final-weak singular by deleting و، ي، or ى: لم يدعُ، لم يرمِ، لم يسعَ.
The same stem operation appears in masculine-singular imperatives: ادعُ، ارمِ، اسعَ. The hard part is limiting deletion to the right morphological cells. Indicative and subjunctive forms can retain the weak letter, while dual, plural, and feminine forms combine the weak stem with their own agreement endings. The reusable repair is: identify the verified principal parts, choose agreement, identify the governor, and only then delete.
The weak-final mood reference supplies the wider paradigm; this page targets the specific over-retention error and its imperative parallel.
The three singular patterns
| Class and principal parts | Indicative | Subjunctive after لن | Jussive after لم | m.sg. imperative |
|---|---|---|---|---|
After deletion, the remaining short vowel belongs to the stem: يدعُ ends in u, يرمِ in i, and يسعَ in a. Those vowels do not mean indicative, genitive, or subjunctive. The jussive governor supplies the mood.
Final wāw: يدعو becomes يدعُ
Form I دعا / يدعو commonly means “invite” with a direct object and إلى, or “call for” with إلى + verbal noun. The first minimal contrast holds the subject and meaning constant:
يدعو المركز الخبراء إلى ندوة شهرية.
yadʿū l-markazu l-khubarāʾa ʾilā nadwatin shahriyya(h).
The center invites experts to a monthly seminar. (Indicative.)
لم يدع المركز أي خبير إلى ندوة هذا الشهر.
lam yadʿu l-markazu ʾayya khabīrin ʾilā nadwati hādhā sh-shahr.
The center did not invite any expert to a seminar this month. (Jussive.)
❌ لم يدعو المدير إلى التصويت على الاقتراح.
Incorrect — singular jussive يدعو deletes final wāw after لم.
✅ لم يدع المدير إلى التصويت على الاقتراح الجديد.
lam yadʿu l-mudīru ʾilā t-taṣwīti ʿalā l-iqtirāḥi l-jadīd.
The director did not call for a vote on the new proposal.
Do not delete in the subjunctive. Final wāw remains and carries overt fatḥa:
❌ لن يدع المتحدث الجمهور إلى المغادرة مبكرا.
Incorrect — singular subjunctive retains wāw: لن يدعوَ; deletion belongs to the jussive.
✅ لن يدعو المتحدث الجمهور إلى المغادرة قبل نهاية الجلسة.
lan yadʿuwa l-mutaḥaddithu l-jumhūra ʾilā l-mughādarati qabla nihāyati l-jalsa(h).
The speaker will not ask the audience to leave before the session ends.
Final yāʾ: يرمي becomes يرمِ
Form I رمى / يرمي means “throw” and extends to “discard” and, with إلى, “aim at.” In the singular jussive, final yāʾ disappears and kasra remains on the preceding consonant.
يرمي العامل المواد التالفة في الحاوية المخصصة.
yarmī l-ʿāmilu l-mawādda t-tālifata fī l-ḥāwiyati l-mukhaṣṣaṣa(h).
The worker discards the damaged materials in the designated container. (Indicative.)
لم يرم الفني البطارية في حاوية النفايات العامة.
lam yarmi l-fanniyyu l-baṭṭāriyyata fī ḥāwiyati n-nufāyāti l-ʿāmma(h).
The technician did not throw the battery into the general-waste bin. (Jussive.)
❌ لم يرمي الطفل البطارية في الصندوق الآمن.
Incorrect — careful standard spelling deletes final ي in singular jussive يرمِ.
✅ لم يرم الطفل البطارية؛ بل سلمها إلى المعلم.
lam yarmi ṭ-ṭiflu l-baṭṭāriyyata; bal sallamahā ʾilā l-muʿallim.
The child did not throw away the battery; he handed it to the teacher.
The second minimal contrast separates subjunctive retention from jussive deletion:
لن يرمي الفريق المخلفات قرب النهر.
lan yarmiya l-farīqu l-mukhallafāti qurba n-nahr.
The team will not dump waste near the river. (Subjunctive: yāʾ retained.)
لم يرم الفريق المخلفات قرب النهر.
lam yarmi l-farīqu l-mukhallafāti qurba n-nahr.
The team did not dump waste near the river. (Jussive: yāʾ deleted.)
English changes will not to did not; Arabic also changes the local governor and therefore the written verb.
Alif maqṣūra: يسعى becomes يسعَ
Form I سعى / يسعى “seek; strive,” root س-ع-ي, normally takes إلى before a goal. Its indicative and subjunctive are surface-identical because the mood vowel is estimated on ى. The jussive deletes ى and exposes fatḥa.
❌ لم يسعى الوسيط إلى تقريب وجهات النظر.
Incorrect — singular jussive يسعى deletes final ى after لم.
✅ لم يسع الوسيط إلى تقريب وجهات النظر في الجلسة الأولى.
lam yasʿa l-wasīṭu ʾilā taqrībi wijhāti n-naẓari fī l-jalsati l-ʾūlā.
The mediator did not seek to bring the viewpoints closer in the first session.
❌ لا تسعى إلى حل سريع قبل فهم المشكلة.
Incorrect as a prohibition to one man — jussive تسعَ deletes ى; the written form shown is indicative/subjunctive.
✅ لا تسع إلى حل سريع قبل فهم المشكلة كاملة.
lā tasʿa ʾilā ḥallin sarīʿin qabla fahmi l-mushkilati kāmila(h).
Do not seek a quick solution before understanding the whole problem. (Addressed to one man.)
The final a of تسعَ is not a subjunctive ending. Prohibitive لا makes the verb jussive, and the vowel is what remains after weak-letter deletion.
Imperatives use the same shortened stem
The masculine-singular imperative is built from the jussive stem: يدعُ → ادعُ, يرمِ → ارمِ, يسعَ → اسعَ. Initial bare alif is hamzat al-waṣl; it is heard at a true beginning and elided in connection.
❌ ادعو الخبير إلى الجلسة التالية.
Incorrect for a command to one man — singular ادعُ has no final wāw; ادعوا addresses a group.
✅ ادع الخبير إلى الجلسة التالية بعد الاستراحة.
ʾudʿu l-khabīra ʾilā l-jalsati t-tāliyati baʿda l-istirāḥa(h).
Invite the expert to the next session after the break. (Addressed to one man.)
❌ ارمي هذه البطارية في الحاوية العامة.
Incorrect for a command to one man — final-yāʾ imperative is ارمِ, without written ي.
✅ ارم هذه الورقة في حاوية إعادة التدوير.
ʾirmi hādhihi l-waraqata fī ḥāwiyati ʾiʿādati t-tadwīr.
Throw this paper in the recycling bin. (Addressed to one man.)
❌ اسعى إلى فهم السبب قبل الرد.
Incorrect for a masculine-singular command — imperative اسعَ deletes final ى.
✅ اسع إلى فهم السبب قبل كتابة الرد.
ʾisʿa ʾilā fahmi s-sababi qabla kitābati r-radd.
Try to understand the reason before writing the reply. (Addressed to one man.)
The plural imperative ادعوا is a legitimate lookalike: final وا is plural agreement, not the singular weak radical wrongly retained. Count the addressees before editing.
Agreement endings can change the visible operation
The simple deletion table applies to cells without a following agreement suffix. Five-verb forms mark non-indicative mood by nūn deletion:
| Subject | Indicative | After لم or لن | Repair logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| هم with دعا | يدعون | لم يدعوا / لن يدعوا | delete mood nūn; retain plural وا |
| هما with رمى | يرميان | لم يرميا / لن يرميا | delete mood nūn; dual stem remains |
| أنتِ with سعى | تسعين | لم تسعي / لن تسعي | delete mood nūn; feminine-singular ي remains |
❌ الخبراء لم يدع إلى إلغاء الجلسة.
Incorrect after a preverbal masculine-plural subject — singular يدع fails full agreement; use يدعوا.
✅ الخبراء لم يدعوا إلى إلغاء الجلسة رغم الخلاف.
al-khubarāʾu lam yadʿū ʾilā ʾilghāʾi l-jalsati raghma l-khilāf.
The experts did not call for canceling the session despite the disagreement.
❌ المحاميان لم يرم إلى تسوية مؤقتة.
Incorrect after a preverbal dual subject — dual يرميا retains its yāʾ sequence and loses mood nūn.
✅ المحاميان لم يرميا إلى تسوية مؤقتة للنزاع.
al-muḥāmiyāni lam yarmiyā ʾilā taswiyatin muʾaqqatin li-n-nizāʿ.
The two lawyers did not aim for a temporary settlement of the dispute.
Feminine plural has nūn al-niswa rather than five-verb mood nūn. الناشطات لم يدعونَ “the activists did not call for...” retains its agreement nūn, whereas masculine plural الناشطون لم يدعوا deletes mood nūn. Unvocalized forms can resemble one another, so subject gender is essential.
Mixed diagnostic set
| Form | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| هو يدعو | correct | singular indicative retains و |
| لن يدعوَ | correct | singular subjunctive retains و and takes fatḥa |
| لم يدعُ | correct | singular jussive deletes و |
| ادعُ | correct | m.sg. imperative uses shortened stem |
| ادعوا | correct | m.pl. imperative retains plural وا |
| هما لم يرميا | correct | dual five-verb form loses nūn, not all final material |
| هي لم تسعَ | correct | f.sg. singular-type jussive deletes ى |
Editing a paragraph
❌ لم يدعو المدير إلى الاجتماع، ولم يرمي الموظف النسخة القديمة، ثم قال لهما: اسعيا إلى حل المشكلة ولا تسعيان إلى تأجيلها.
Incorrect — two singular jussives retain weak letters, and the dual prohibition retains mood nūn.
✅ لم يدع المدير إلى الاجتماع، ولم يرم الموظف النسخة القديمة، ثم قال لهما: اسعيا إلى حل المشكلة ولا تسعيا إلى تأجيلها.
lam yadʿu l-mudīru ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi, wa-lam yarmi l-muwaẓẓafu n-nuskhata l-qadīmata, thumma qāla lahumā: ʾisʿayā ʾilā ḥalli l-mushkilati wa-lā tasʿayā ʾilā taʾjīlihā.
The director did not call for the meeting, and the employee did not discard the old copy; then he told the two of them: seek a solution to the problem and do not seek to postpone it.
Singular يدعُ and يرمِ show weak-letter deletion. Dual imperative اسعيا and dual prohibitive لا تسعيا retain the material required by dual agreement while deleting the five-verb mood nūn in the prohibition.
Common Mistakes
1. Preserving the dictionary's weak letter after لم
❌ لم يمشي المريض مسافة طويلة اليوم.
Incorrect — final-yāʾ مشى / يمشي forms singular jussive يمشِ.
✅ لم يمش المريض مسافة طويلة بسبب ألم ساقه.
lam yamshi l-marīḍu masāfatan ṭawīlatan bi-sababi ʾalami sāqih.
The patient did not walk a long distance because of pain in his leg.
2. Deleting the weak letter in the subjunctive
❌ لن يرم الفريق المعدات القديمة هذا الأسبوع.
Incorrect — after لن, singular subjunctive يرميَ retains yāʾ.
✅ لن يرمي الفريق المعدات القديمة قبل فحصها.
lan yarmiya l-farīqu l-muʿaddāti l-qadīmata qabla faḥṣihā.
The team will not discard the old equipment before inspecting it.
3. Applying singular deletion to a plural form
❌ المتحدثون لم يدع إلى تغيير القرار.
Incorrect after a preverbal plural subject — use masculine-plural يدعوا, not singular يدع.
✅ المتحدثون لم يدعوا إلى تغيير القرار خلال المؤتمر.
al-mutaḥaddithūna lam yadʿū ʾilā taghyīri l-qarāri khilāla l-muʾtamar.
The speakers did not call for changing the decision during the conference.
4. Reading the exposed vowel as a mood ending
❌ لم يسع الفريق إلى حل بديل.
lam yasʿa, so the verb must be subjunctive
Incorrect analysis — the audible a is the stem vowel exposed after jussive deletion of ى.
✅ لم يسع الفريق إلى حل بديل حتى نفدت الخيارات.
lam yasʿa l-farīqu ʾilā ḥallin badīlin ḥattā nafidati l-khiyārāt.
The team did not seek an alternative solution until the options ran out.
Repair procedure
- Verify the perfect/imperfect pair and weak class; do not infer it from the English gloss.
- Identify person, gender, and number before changing the ending.
- Find the governor: only a jussive environment triggers the singular deletion taught here.
- Delete و، ي، or ى and preserve the class-specific stem vowel.
- For five-verb or feminine-plural cells, use their full paradigm instead of the singular shortcut.
- For a masculine-singular imperative, build from the shortened jussive stem and add hamzat al-waṣl as required.
Key Takeaways
- Singular final-weak jussives delete final و، ي، or ى and retain a class-specific short stem vowel.
- Indicative and subjunctive singulars normally retain wāw or yāʾ; alif maqṣūra hides the indicative/subjunctive contrast.
- Masculine-singular imperatives use the shortened jussive stem.
- Dual, plural, and feminine forms must be built from their own agreement paradigms rather than by blind last-letter deletion.
