English introduces relative clauses after both definite and indefinite nouns with who, which, or that: “the engineer who called” and “an engineer who called.” Formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic makes a different first division. A definite antecedent normally takes an agreeing form of الذي; an indefinite antecedent takes a descriptive clause directly: المهندس الذي اتصل but مهندس اتصل.
The English transfer error مهندس الذي اتصل combines two incompatible signals. مهندس presents a new, indefinite participant, while الذي expects an already definite antecedent. The repair is not simply “delete a word.” First establish the whole antecedent's definiteness, then choose the matching clause architecture, and finally check whether the antecedent needs a resumptive pronoun inside the clause.
For the complete positive system, compare Relative Clauses with Indefinite Antecedents; the present page is organized as an error-remediation workflow.
The architecture follows definiteness
| Antecedent | Relative architecture | Example |
|---|---|---|
| indefinite | noun + descriptive clause | باحث نشر الدراسة |
| definite by الـ | noun + الذي-series + clause | الباحث الذي نشر الدراسة |
| definite by possession | possessed noun + الذي-series | زميلي الذي نشر الدراسة |
| definite iḍāfa | iḍāfa + الذي-series | مدير المشروع الذي اتصل |
Traditional grammar describes the clause after an indefinite noun as جملة صفة, a sentence functioning as an adjective. It is asyndetic: no connector appears. That absence is a positive grammatical pattern, not a shortened colloquial version of الذي.
❌ قابلت باحثا الذي يدرس تغير المناخ.
Incorrect — indefinite باحثا takes a descriptive clause directly.
✅ قابلت باحثا يدرس تغير المناخ في المدن الساحلية.
qābaltu bāḥithan yadrusu taghayyura l-munākhi fī l-muduni s-sāḥiliyya(h).
I met a researcher who studies climate change in coastal cities.
Six recurring repairs
Indefinite masculine singular
❌ نحتاج إلى خبير الذي يفهم هذا النظام.
Incorrect — خبير is indefinite, so the following clause must be unlinked.
✅ نحتاج إلى خبير يفهم هذا النظام المعقد.
naḥtāju ʾilā khabīrin yafhamu hādhā n-niẓāma l-muʿaqqad.
We need an expert who understands this complex system.
Indefinite feminine singular
❌ وصلت رسالة التي تؤكد موعد المقابلة.
Incorrect — indefinite رسالة takes تؤكد directly, without التي.
✅ وصلت رسالة تؤكد موعد المقابلة صباح الاثنين.
waṣalat risālatun tuʾakkidu mawʿida l-muqābalati ṣabāḥa l-ithnayn.
A message confirming the interview time arrived on Monday morning.
Indefinite human plural
❌ تطوع طلاب الذين يتحدثون ثلاث لغات.
Incorrect — indefinite طلاب is followed directly by its descriptive clause.
✅ تطوع طلاب يتحدثون ثلاث لغات في مركز الاستقبال.
taṭawwaʿa ṭullābun yataḥaddathūna thalātha lughātin fī markazi l-istiqbāl.
Students who speak three languages volunteered at the reception center.
Indefinite dual
❌ تقدمت طبيبتان اللتان تعملان في الريف.
Incorrect — indefinite dual طبيبتان takes the dual clause directly, not اللتان.
✅ تقدمت طبيبتان تعملان في عيادتين ريفيتين.
taqaddamat ṭabībatāni taʿmalāni fī ʿiyādatayni rīfiyyatayn.
Two female doctors who work in two rural clinics applied.
Indefinite predicate after a demonstrative
❌ هذا تطبيق الذي يساعدك على تنظيم وقتك.
Incorrect for ‘This is an app that helps you’: تطبيق is the indefinite predicate of هذا.
✅ هذا تطبيق يساعدك على تنظيم جدولك اليومي.
hādhā taṭbīqun yusāʿiduka ʿalā tanẓīmi jadwalika l-yawmiyy.
This is an app that helps you organize your daily schedule. (Addressing one man.)
Indefinite antecedent with an internal preposition
❌ أبحث عن زميل الذي أستطيع السفر معه.
Incorrect — the resumptive معه is right, but indefinite زميل excludes الذي.
✅ أبحث عن زميل أستطيع السفر معه إلى المؤتمر.
ʾabḥathu ʿan zamīlin ʾastaṭīʿu s-safara maʿahu ʾilā l-muʾtamar.
I am looking for a colleague with whom I can travel to the conference.
The last pair proves an essential distinction: deleting الذي does not delete معه. Definiteness controls the external connector; the antecedent's role inside the clause controls the resumptive.
Two minimal contrasts
A new participant versus an identified participant
تحدثت إلى مترجمة تتقن لغة الإشارة.
taḥaddathtu ʾilā mutarjimatin tutqinu lughata l-ʾishāra(h).
I spoke to an interpreter who knows sign language. (New, indefinite participant.)
تحدثت إلى المترجمة التي تتقن لغة الإشارة.
taḥaddathtu ʾilā l-mutarjimati llatī tutqinu lughata l-ʾishāra(h).
I spoke to the interpreter who knows sign language. (Definite participant.)
The clause is otherwise identical. The article on المترجمة changes its discourse status and triggers التي.
“This is a report” versus “this report”
هذا تقرير يلخص نتائج المرحلة الأولى.
hādhā taqrīrun yulakhkhiṣu natāʾija l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā.
This is a report that summarizes the first phase's results.
هذا التقرير الذي يلخص نتائج المرحلة الأولى دقيق.
hādhā t-taqrīru lladhī yulakhkhiṣu natāʾija l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā daqīq.
This report, which summarizes the first phase's results, is accurate.
In هذا تقرير, the demonstrative is a subject and تقرير is an indefinite predicate. In هذا التقرير, demonstrative plus definite noun form one definite phrase. English this can conceal the contrast; Arabic spelling displays it.
Resumptives survive in asyndetic clauses
When the antecedent is the understood subject, no suffix is needed:
دخلت امرأة تحمل صندوقا ثقيلا.
dakhalati mraʾatun taḥmilu ṣundūqan thaqīlā.
A woman carrying a heavy box came in.
When it is an object, an overt suffix is the clearest productive pattern:
شاهدنا فيلما رشحه لنا صديق من تونس.
shāhadnā fīlman rashshaḥahu lanā ṣadīqun min tūnis.
We watched a film that a friend from Tunisia recommended to us.
When it is governed by a preposition or is a possessor, the suffix is required:
استأجرنا شقة تطل نوافذها على حديقة عامة.
istaʾjarnā shaqqatan tuṭillu nawāfidhuhā ʿalā ḥadīqatin ʿāmma(h).
We rented an apartment whose windows overlook a public garden.
No التي appears after فيلما or شقة, but ـه and ـها still link the internal role back to the antecedent.
Legitimate structures that contain الذي near an indefinite noun
Not every visual sequence involving an indefinite noun and الذي is the target error. Punctuation and clause structure matter. Arabic can introduce an indefinite participant, then make a separate predication with هو الذي “he is the one who”:
وصل رجل، وهو الذي اتصل بنا صباحا.
waṣala rajulun, wa-huwa lladhī ttaṣala binā ṣabāḥā.
A man arrived, and he is the one who called us this morning.
Here الذي does not directly modify indefinite رجل. The comma and وهو start a new nominal clause. Likewise, وجدنا حلا، وهو الذي اقترحته اللجنة means “We found a solution, and it is the one the committee proposed.” Do not mechanically delete every الذي that follows an indefinite somewhere nearby; parse the clause boundary.
A repair algorithm
- Bracket the complete antecedent. Include any demonstrative, possessive suffix, or iḍāfa dependent.
- Test definiteness. Article, possession, a definite iḍāfa, or a demonstrative phrase can make it definite.
- Choose the external link. Definite: matching الذي form. Indefinite: no relative pronoun.
- Reconstruct the internal clause. Decide whether the antecedent is subject, object, prepositional complement, or possessor.
- Restore any resumptive. Do not strand a preposition or omit a possessive link merely because the clause is asyndetic.
- Check the discourse reading. A bare clause after a definite noun may be circumstantial rather than relative.
Mixed diagnostic set
قرأت مقالا يشرح الفرق بين الطريقتين.
qaraʾtu maqālan yashraḥu l-farqa bayna ṭ-ṭarīqatayn.
I read an article that explains the difference between the two methods. Correct indefinite architecture.
قرأت المقال الذي أرسلته إلي أمس.
qaraʾtu l-maqāla lladhī ʾarsaltahu ʾilayya ʾams.
I read the article that you sent me yesterday. Correct definite architecture; addressing one man.
خرج الطفل يركض نحو أمه.
kharaja ṭ-ṭiflu yarkuḍu naḥwa ʾummih.
The child came out running toward his mother. Bare clause after a definite noun: circumstantial reading.
❌ اشترينا أجهزة التي تستهلك طاقة أقل.
Incorrect — indefinite nonhuman plural أجهزة takes its feminine singular descriptive clause directly.
The third sentence is grammatical, but it is not an identifying relative meaning “the child who runs.” A correct diagnosis must distinguish an actual relative error from a different valid construction.
Editing a paragraph
❌ نبحث عن شركة التي تطور أدوات تعليمية، وعن مصممين الذين يعرفون احتياجات الأطفال، وعن منصة التي يمكن للمدارس الاعتماد عليها.
Incorrect — all three antecedents are indefinite, although the final resumptive عليها is required and should remain.
✅ نبحث عن شركة تطور أدوات تعليمية، وعن مصممين يعرفون احتياجات الأطفال، وعن منصة يمكن للمدارس الاعتماد عليها.
nabḥathu ʿan sharikatin tuṭawwiru ʾadawātin taʿlīmiyya(h), wa-ʿan muṣammimīna yaʿrifūna ḥtiyājāti l-ʾaṭfāl, wa-ʿan minaṣṣatin yumkinu lil-madārisi l-iʿtimādu ʿalayhā.
We are looking for a company that develops educational tools, designers who understand children's needs, and a platform that schools can rely on.
The edit removes three English-driven connectors. It preserves عليها, because اعتمد على still needs a complement inside the third descriptive clause.
Common Mistakes
Judging definiteness from English “a particular” meaning
❌ أريد موظفا الذي قابلته أمس.
Incorrect — even a specific person in the speaker's mind remains grammatically indefinite in موظفا.
✅ أريد موظفا قابلته أمس عند مكتب الاستقبال.
ʾurīdu muwaẓẓafan qābaltuhu ʾamsi ʿinda maktabi l-istiqbāl.
I want an employee whom I met yesterday at reception.
Missing a hidden definite iḍāfa
❌ تغير موعد المقابلة أعلناه الأسبوع الماضي.
Wrong for an identifying relative — موعد المقابلة is definite because its final iḍāfa term is definite.
✅ تغير موعد المقابلة الذي أعلناه الأسبوع الماضي.
taghayyara mawʿidu l-muqābalati lladhī ʾaʿlannāhu l-ʾusbūʿa l-māḍī.
The interview time that we announced last week changed.
Deleting the resumptive along with الذي
❌ قابلت صحفية أقرأ مقالات منذ سنوات.
Incorrect for ‘whose articles’: مقالات needs a suffix linking it to صحفية.
✅ قابلت صحفية أقرأ مقالاتها منذ خمس سنوات.
qābaltu ṣaḥafiyyatan ʾaqraʾu maqālātihā mundhu khamsi sanawāt.
I met a journalist whose articles I have been reading for five years.
Adding الذي because the clause is long
❌ وصل اقتراح الذي يمكن تطبيقه من دون زيادة الميزانية.
Incorrect — clause length does not make indefinite اقتراح definite.
✅ وصل اقتراح يمكن تطبيقه من دون زيادة الميزانية الحالية.
waṣala qtirāḥun yumkinu taṭbīquhu min dūni ziyādati l-mīzāniyyati l-ḥāliyya(h).
A proposal arrived that can be implemented without increasing the current budget.
Key Takeaways
- An indefinite antecedent takes a descriptive clause directly; الذي belongs after a definite antecedent.
- Specificity in the speaker's mind does not automatically make an Arabic noun grammatically definite.
- Demonstratives, possession, and definite iḍāfas can make the whole antecedent definite even when the pattern is less obvious than الـ + noun.
- Removing الذي does not remove required object, prepositional, or possessive resumptives.
- Parse clause boundaries before editing: رجل، وهو الذي... contains a separate predication, not an illicit رجل الذي... sequence.
