A reformulation marker promises that the following words will present substantially the same content in a clearer, more precise, or differently framed form. Modern Standard Arabic commonly uses explanatory أي “that is / namely,” بمعنى آخر “in other words,” and بعبارة أخرى “put another way.” They do not add another reason or example; they reopen something already said and recast it.
This function can operate inside a noun phrase, between clauses, or across sentences. Syntax matters: أي can introduce an integrated explanation or appositional specification, whereas the two prepositional expressions normally comment on a whole preceding proposition. Register also differs. أي is concise and widespread in formal explanation; بمعنى آخر is (formal neutral); بعبارة أخرى is a slightly more explicit editorial signal, common in (formal/academic) exposition.
From repetition to purposeful restatement
Two sentences may repeat an idea without telling the reader why. A reformulation marker declares that the second is a new wording of the first:
القرار مؤقت. سيعاد النظر فيه بعد ستة أشهر.
al-qarāru muʾaqqat. sa-yuʿādu n-naẓaru fīhi baʿda sittati ʾashhur.
The decision is temporary. It will be reconsidered after six months.
القرار مؤقت. بعبارة أخرى، سيعاد النظر فيه بعد ستة أشهر.
al-qarāru muʾaqqat. bi-ʿibāratin ʾukhrā, sa-yuʿādu n-naẓaru fīhi baʿda sittati ʾashhur.
The decision is temporary. Put another way, it will be reconsidered after six months.
The second sentence does more than follow the first: it unpacks what “temporary” means in this policy. The marker points backward to the whole assertion, not merely to the nearest word.
أي: concise explanation and specification
Explanatory أيْ is an indeclinable particle in this use. It does not itself assign case or verbal mood. What follows receives its syntax from the larger sentence or forms an explanatory appositional unit. In edited prose, a comma, paired commas, colon, or dash may display the boundary according to its weight.
It can clarify one noun phrase:
ستطبق الخطة في الربع الأخير، أي في الأشهر الثلاثة الأخيرة من السنة.
sa-tuṭabbaqu l-khuṭṭatu fī r-rubʿi l-ʾakhīri, ʾay fī l-ʾashhuri th-thalāthati l-ʾakhīrati mina s-sana(h).
The plan will be implemented in the final quarter, that is, in the last three months of the year.
The second prepositional phrase identifies the same period more explicitly. أي does not make الأشهر accusative; في makes it genitive.
It can also explain a complete proposition:
لن تلغى الخدمة، أي إن المستفيدين سيواصلون تلقي الدعم.
lan tulghā l-khidma(h), ʾay ʾinna l-mustafīdīna sa-yuwāṣilūna talaqqiya d-daʿm.
The service will not be canceled; that is, beneficiaries will continue receiving support. (Formal clarification.)
Here heavy إنّ opens the explanatory nominal clause and makes المستفيدين accusative. The case comes from إنّ, not أي. In a short specification, أي can be close to “namely”; in a full-clause restatement, “that is” is often more natural.
بمعنى آخر: recast the meaning
بمعنى آخر literally means “with another meaning,” but idiomatically it signals “in other words.” Internally بـ governs معنى; its genitive ending is estimated because the noun ends in alif maqṣūra. آخر is an indefinite masculine adjective modifying معنى, not the second term of an iḍāfa. Because آخر is diptote here, its genitive is marked with fatḥa: بِمَعْنًى آخَرَ. The phrase usually comments on a preceding proposition and is commonly followed by a comma at sentence onset.
لا يكفي أن تكون البيانات كثيرة. بمعنى آخر، يجب أن تكون مرتبطة بالسؤال الذي نبحثه.
lā yakfī ʾan takūna l-bayānātu kathīra(h). bi-maʿnan ʾākhara, yajibu ʾan takūna murtaṭibatan bis-suʾāli lladhī nabḥathuh.
It is not enough for the data to be plentiful. In other words, they must be relevant to the question under investigation. (Academic.)
This second sentence converts a negative warning into a positive criterion. It preserves the intended proposition while changing perspective. Reformulation therefore does not require word-for-word synonymy; it requires discourse equivalence in the context.
The expression can be medial when paired punctuation clearly bounds it:
يعتمد النظام على التحقق المزدوج؛ فهو، بمعنى آخر، لا يقبل الموافقة من شخص واحد.
yaʿtamidu n-niẓāmu ʿalā t-taḥaqquqi l-muzdawaj; fa-huwa, bi-maʿnan ʾākhara, lā yaqbalu l-muwāfaqata min shakhsin wāḥid.
The system relies on double verification; in other words, it does not accept approval from only one person.
The paired commas mark the phrase as the writer’s comment on the relation between two claims. For ordinary prose, sentence-initial position is often cleaner than repeatedly interrupting clauses.
بعبارة أخرى: change the wording explicitly
بعبارة أخرى means “in another formulation / put another way.” بـ governs genitive عبارةٍ, and adjective أخرى agrees with the feminine noun; its genitive case is estimated on final ى. Unlike بمعنى آخر, the phrase explicitly evokes wording, so it suits an editorial rephrasing, a simplified restatement, or a shift from technical to accessible language.
تتسم العينة بانحياز في الاختيار؛ بعبارة أخرى، لا تمثل المشاركين المحتملين تمثيلا عادلا.
tattasimu l-ʿayyinatu bi-nḥiyāzin fī l-ikhtiyār; bi-ʿibāratin ʾukhrā, lā tumaththilu l-mushārikīna l-muḥtamalīna tamthīlan ʿādilan.
The sample is affected by selection bias; put another way, it does not fairly represent the potential participants. (Academic explanation.)
This is not merely an example of selection bias. It restates the technical diagnosis in operational language.
A near-synonym contrast
The three markers overlap, but their preferred scale differs:
| Marker | Usual scope | Typical contribution | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| أي | noun phrase or clause | identifies, specifies, or glosses concisely | formal neutral |
| بمعنى آخر | whole proposition | recasts the meaning or implication | formal / academic |
| بعبارة أخرى | whole proposition | offers an explicitly different wording | formal / editorial |
سيقتصر الحضور على أعضاء اللجنة، أي على سبعة أشخاص فقط. بمعنى آخر، لن يدعى ممثلو الإدارات الأخرى.
sa-yaqtaṣiru l-ḥuḍūru ʿalā ʾaʿḍāʾi l-lajna(h), ʾay ʿalā sabʿati ʾashkhāṣin faqaṭ. bi-maʿnan ʾākhara, lan yudʿā mumaththilū l-ʾidārāti l-ʾukhrā.
Attendance will be limited to committee members, namely only seven people. In other words, representatives of the other departments will not be invited.
أي identifies the membership count inside the first sentence. بمعنى آخر then derives an equivalent practical implication across a sentence boundary. That difference in scope is more useful than memorizing three English glosses.
Reformulation and punctuation
A short integrated gloss may follow a comma. A colon can announce a fuller definition; a semicolon or full stop is preferable when both propositions are independent and internally complex. Paired commas or dashes set off a truly parenthetical reformulation. Punctuation displays the scope, but the marker states the relation.
Do not use و as a universal bridge. و merely adds, so it leaves readers to infer whether the next clause is a consequence, correction, example, or restatement. Likewise, لكن/لكنّ promises a contrast rather than equivalence. See Coordinating Complete Sentences for the basic linker distinctions.
A coherent argumentative paragraph
yaqīsu l-muʾashshiru mutawassiṭa muddati l-intiẓār, ʾay az-zamana bayna tasjīli ṭ-ṭalabi wa-badʾi muʿālajatih. lakini l-mutawassiṭu waḥdahu qad yukhfī ḥālāti t-taʾkhīri sh-shadīd. bi-ʿibāratin ʾukhrā, qad yabdū l-ʾadāʾu maqbūlan maʿa ʾanna ʿadadan ṣaghīran mina ṭ-ṭalabāti yantaẓiru ʾayyāman. lidhālika yanbaghī nashru l-wasīṭi wa-ʾaṭwali mudadi l-intiẓāri ʾayḍan; bi-maʿnan ʾākhara, yaḥtāju l-qāriʾu ʾilā ṣūrati t-tawzīʿi lā ʾilā raqmin wāḥid.
The indicator measures average waiting time, that is, the time between registering a request and beginning to process it. But the average alone may hide cases of severe delay. Put another way, performance may appear acceptable even though a small number of requests wait for days. The median and the longest waiting times should therefore also be published; in other words, the reader needs the shape of the distribution, not a single number. (Academic argument.)
Each marker keeps one argumentative job. أي defines a term, لكنْ opens a contrast without governing the following nominative subject, بعبارة أخرى restates the warning, لذلك draws a result, and بمعنى آخر restates the recommendation. This is cohesion, not ornament.
Common Mistakes
Joining every sentence with و
❌ القرار غير نهائي، وبمعنى آخر وسيعاد النظر فيه لاحقا.
Incorrect—stacking wa before the marker and again before its clause leaves the reformulation without a well-formed attachment.
✅ القرار غير نهائي؛ أي إنه سيعاد النظر فيه لاحقا.
al-qarāru ghayru nihāʾiyy; ʾay ʾinnahu sa-yuʿādu n-naẓaru fīhi lāḥiqan.
The decision is not final; that is, it will be reconsidered later.
Using a reformulation marker for an example
❌ توجد وسائل نقل عامة، أي الحافلات مثلا.
Muddled relation—buses are presented as one example, not necessarily the complete meaning of public transport.
✅ توجد وسائل نقل عامة؛ فمثلا، تعمل الحافلات حتى منتصف الليل.
tūjadu wasāʾilu naqlin ʿāmma(h); fa-mathalan, taʿmalu l-ḥāfilātu ḥattā muntaṣafi l-layl.
There is public transport; for example, buses run until midnight.
Treating “however” or “therefore” as the same relation
❌ ارتفعت التكاليف، بعبارة أخرى خفضت الشركة الإنتاج.
Incorrect relation if reduced production followed from higher costs—the second proposition is a result, not a restatement.
✅ ارتفعت التكاليف؛ لذلك خفضت الشركة الإنتاج.
irtafaʿati t-takālīf; lidhālika khaffaḍati sh-sharikatu l-ʾintāj.
Costs rose; therefore, the company reduced production.
Confusing light لكنْ with heavy لكنّ
❌ الفكرة واضحة، لكن ها تحتاج إلى مثال.
Incorrect—when the pronoun is the noun of heavy lakinna, it attaches directly; it cannot be separated as ها.
✅ الفكرة واضحة، لكنها تحتاج إلى مثال يشرحها.
al-fikratu wāḍiḥa(h), lākinnahā taḥtāju ʾilā mithālin yashraḥuhā.
The idea is clear, but it needs an example that explains it.
Using reformulation as empty formal padding
❌ بعبارة أخرى، يبين التقرير النتائج.
Empty as an isolated sentence—there is no earlier formulation for the phrase to recast.
✅ لا يكتفي التقرير بعرض الأرقام؛ بعبارة أخرى، يفسر أسباب تغيرها أيضا.
lā yaktafī t-taqrīru bi-ʿarḍi l-ʾarqām; bi-ʿibāratin ʾukhrā, yufassiru ʾasbāba taghayyurihā ʾayḍan.
The report does not merely present the figures; put another way, it also explains why they changed.
Key Takeaways
- أي efficiently specifies a phrase or explains a clause; it does not govern the case or mood that follows.
- بمعنى آخر recasts meaning, while بعبارة أخرى explicitly changes the wording of a proposition.
- A reformulation preserves the contextual claim; an example supplies one member, a contrast cancels an expectation, and a result follows from evidence.
- Use punctuation to show whether the restatement is integrated, parenthetical, or sentence-level.
- A reformulation marker needs an actual prior formulation. Without one, it is empty formal padding.
