Giving Examples: مثلًا، على سبيل المثال

An example marker makes a promise to the reader: the next item is not a new argument but a concrete instance of a category or claim already available in the discourse. Modern Standard Arabic commonly uses مثلًا “for example” and the fuller على سبيل المثال “by way of example.” They can point forward to a phrase, a clause, or a whole sentence, but their scope must be recoverable.

English for example moves fairly freely and is often surrounded by commas. Arabic permits similar mobility, but punctuation follows scope rather than an imported English template. The two Arabic expressions also have different internal grammar: مثلًا is an accusative adverbial form, while على سبيل المثال is a prepositional phrase containing an iḍāfa. Both are (formal neutral); the longer form is especially at home in reports, lectures, and academic prose (formal/academic).

The example must have an anchor

An example answers an implicit question such as “what kind?”, “which instance?”, or “how could this be done?” The preceding discourse supplies the general class; the marked expression supplies one member. Compare two independent sentences with a cohesive pair:

تستطيع المدن خفض استهلاك الطاقة. يمكنها تركيب مصابيح موفرة في المباني العامة.

tastaṭīʿu l-mudunu khafḍa stihlāki ṭ-ṭāqa(h). yumkinuhā tarkību maṣābīḥa muwaffiratin fī l-mabānī l-ʿāmma(h).

Cities can reduce energy consumption. They can install energy-efficient lights in public buildings.

تستطيع المدن خفض استهلاك الطاقة. فمثلا، يمكنها تركيب مصابيح موفرة في المباني العامة.

tastaṭīʿu l-mudunu khafḍa stihlāki ṭ-ṭāqa(h). fa-mathalan, yumkinuhā tarkību maṣābīḥa muwaffiratin fī l-mabānī l-ʿāmma(h).

Cities can reduce energy consumption. For example, they can install energy-efficient lights in public buildings.

The added sentence does not prove that every energy-saving measure concerns lighting. It instantiates the broader proposition. Initial فـ is optional here, but useful: فمثلًا explicitly links the new sentence to what precedes it. A bare مثلًا can also begin the sentence when the paragraph connection is already obvious.

💡
Before using an example marker, name its anchor in a few words: “an energy-saving measure,” “one affected sector,” or “one possible procedure.” If no such category is available, the marker is probably empty padding.

مثلًا: a compact accusative adverb

مثلًا is the accusative form of مثل used adverbially. In careful vocalization it ends in -an, written with tanwīn fatḥ and its support alif: مَثَلًا. It is not an invariant uninflected particle, even though ordinary unvocalized prose hides the short vowels.

At the beginning of a sentence, it normally scopes over the whole following proposition:

مثلا، قد يؤدي تأخر يوم واحد إلى إعادة جدولة المشروع كله.

mathalan, qad yuʾaddī taʾakhkhuru yawmin wāḥidin ʾilā ʾiʿādati jadwalati l-mashrūʿi kullih.

For example, a delay of one day may require the entire project to be rescheduled. (Formal neutral.)

In medial position, paired commas mark it as a parenthetical comment and usually give it scope over the nearby phrase or clause:

يمكن خفض النفقات، مثلا، بتوحيد نظام الشراء بين الإدارات.

yumkinu khafḍu n-nafaqāti, mathalan, bi-tawḥīdi niẓāmi sh-shirāʾi bayna l-ʾidārāt.

Costs can be reduced, for example, by standardizing procurement across departments. (Formal.)

Final مثلًا is possible, especially after a short constituent, but it can be ambiguous: does it exemplify the last noun or the entire proposal? Use it only when the intended anchor is unmistakable.

يمكن أن نبدأ بالمراكز الصغيرة مثلا.

yumkinu ʾan nabdaʾa bil-marākizi ṣ-ṣaghīrati mathalan.

We could start with the small centers, for example. (The centers are the proposed instance.)

Here مثلًا most naturally singles out المراكز الصغيرة as one possible starting point. If the writer means to exemplify a whole method, initial position is clearer.

على سبيل المثال: an explicit formal frame

على سبيل المثال literally means “on the path of the example.” Internally, على governs genitive سبيلِ, and سبيل المثال is an iḍāfa, so المثالِ is also genitive. The definite article belongs only to the second noun; do not write على السبيل المثال.

💡
Use the short form when the example is locally obvious. Use the full phrase when a dense argument needs an unmistakable signpost—but do not repeat both for prestige.

على سبيل المثال، تتيح المنصة للطلاب إعادة الاختبار مرتين.

ʿalā sabīli l-mithāli, tutīḥu l-minaṣṣatu liṭ-ṭullābi ʾiʿādata l-ikhtibāri marratayn.

For example, the platform allows students to retake the test twice. (Formal explanatory prose.)

The fuller expression is useful when a paragraph has several possible relations—cause, contrast, inference—and the writer wants to label “example” unmistakably. It can also follow the general claim:

تحتاج الخطة إلى مؤشرات قابلة للقياس؛ على سبيل المثال، يمكن تسجيل مدة الانتظار في كل فرع.

taḥtāju l-khuṭṭatu ʾilā muʾashshirātin qābilatin lil-qiyās; ʿalā sabīli l-mithāli, yumkinu tasjīlu muddati l-intiẓāri fī kulli farʿ.

The plan needs measurable indicators; for example, the waiting time at each branch can be recorded. (Formal procedural prose.)

The semicolon is appropriate because the second clause is substantial and illustrates the first. A full stop would also work. A comma alone can be too weak when both sides are long independent propositions.

Near-synonyms, not perfect duplicates

Both markers introduce an instance, but they differ in weight. مثلًا is shorter and integrates easily into speech or a sentence. على سبيل المثال explicitly labels the rhetorical move and is more characteristic of planned exposition. Neither means “namely”: a true example is one member among possible members, whereas reformulation or specification may identify the complete intended content.

تشمل الحماية فئات حساسة، مثلا الأطفال وكبار السن.

tashmalu l-ḥimāyatu fiʾātin ḥassāsatan, mathalan al-ʾaṭfāla wa-kibāra s-sinn.

Protection covers vulnerable groups, for example children and older people. (These are instances, not an exhaustive definition.)

If children and older people are the only groups intended, أي or a colon may identify them more accurately. See Reformulation for that distinction.

A coherent procedural paragraph

ينبغي أن يبدأ التقييم بسؤال محدد، ثم تجمع البيانات التي تجيب عنه. فمثلا، إذا كان السؤال يتعلق بسرعة الخدمة، يمكن تسجيل وقت وصول كل طلب ووقت إنجازه، ويكشف الفرق بين الوقتين مواضع التأخير. بعد ذلك تقارن النتائج بين الفروع بدل الاكتفاء بانطباعات عامة.

yanbaghī ʾan yabdaʾa t-taqyīmu bi-suʾālin muḥaddadin, thumma tujmaʿu l-bayānātu llatī tujību ʿanh. fa-mathalan, ʾidhā kāna s-suʾālu yataʿallaqu bi-surʿati l-khidmati, yumkinu tasjīlu waqti wuṣūli kulli ṭalabin wa-waqti ʾinjāzih, wa-yakshifu l-farqu bayna l-waqtayni mawāḍiʿa t-taʾkhīr. baʿda dhālika tuqāranu n-natāʾiju bayna l-furūʿi badala l-iktifāʾi bi-nṭibāʿātin ʿāmma(h).

An evaluation should begin with a specific question, after which the data that answer it are collected. For example, if the question concerns service speed, the arrival and completion time of every request can be recorded, and the difference between those times reveals where delays occur. The results are then compared across branches instead of relying on general impressions. (Formal procedural paragraph.)

The single فمثلًا has clear scope over the measurement procedure that follows. Repeating the marker before each detail would fragment the paragraph; once the example frame is established, ordinary coordination can develop it.

Common Mistakes

Joining every sentence with و

❌ تحتاج المدينة إلى حلول عملية، وتزرع الأشجار في الساحات.

Incorrect for the intended relation—wa merely adds another statement; it does not promise that tree planting is an example of the solutions.

✅ تحتاج المدينة إلى حلول عملية؛ فمثلا، يمكنها زرع الأشجار في الساحات العامة.

taḥtāju l-madīnatu ʾilā ḥulūlin ʿamaliyya(h); fa-mathalan, yumkinuhā zarʿu l-ʾashjāri fī s-sāḥāti l-ʿāmma(h).

The city needs practical solutions; for example, it can plant trees in public squares.

Treating مثلًا as an invariant spelling

❌ يمكن تحسين التواصل، مثل، بإرسال ملخص أسبوعي.

Incorrect—the adverbial example marker is مثلًا, with accusative tanwīn fatḥ and its support alif.

✅ يمكن تحسين التواصل، مثلا، بإرسال ملخص أسبوعي.

yumkinu taḥsīnu t-tawāṣuli, mathalan, bi-ʾirsāli mulakhkhaṣin ʾusbūʿiyy.

Communication can be improved, for example, by sending a weekly summary.

Confusing an example with a result or concession

❌ انخفضت الحرارة، مثلا أغلقنا النوافذ.

Incorrect for 'therefore'—closing the windows is presented as a consequence, not an instance of lower temperature.

✅ انخفضت الحرارة؛ لذلك أغلقنا النوافذ.

inkhafaḍati l-ḥarāra(h); lidhālika ʾaghlaqnā n-nawāfidh.

The temperature fell; therefore, we closed the windows.

Using heavy لكنّ when no contrast exists

❌ توجد وسائل كثيرة، لكن مثلا التدريب القصير مفيد.

Incorrect discourse choice—the second proposition illustrates the first rather than opposing an expectation; heavy lakinna also requires a properly formed nominal clause.

✅ توجد وسائل كثيرة؛ فمثلا، يفيد التدريب القصير الموظفين الجدد.

tūjadu wasāʾilu kathīra(h); fa-mathalan, yufīdu t-tadrību l-qaṣīru l-muwaẓẓafīna l-judud.

There are many methods; for example, short training benefits new employees.

Adding a prestigious marker with no anchor

❌ وعلى سبيل المثال، تؤكد الإدارة أهمية الجودة.

Weak and empty as an isolated opening—nothing identifies what the statement is an example of.

✅ تتخذ الإدارة إجراءات لضمان الجودة؛ وعلى سبيل المثال، تراجع عينة من الملفات كل أسبوع.

tattakhidhu l-ʾidāratu ʾijrāʾātin li-ḍamāni l-jawda(h); wa-ʿalā sabīli l-mithāli, turājiʿu ʿayyinatan mina l-malaffāti kulla ʾusbūʿ.

Management takes steps to ensure quality; for example, it reviews a sample of files every week.

Key Takeaways

  • مثلًا is a compact accusative adverb; على سبيل المثال is a prepositional iḍāfa phrase.
  • The preceding discourse supplies a class or claim, and the marked material supplies one concrete instance.
  • Initial position usually scopes over a whole proposition; paired commas can mark a medial parenthetical; final position needs an unmistakable anchor.
  • و adds, لذلك infers, and لكن/لكنّ contrasts. None automatically means “for example.”
  • Choose the longer form for explicit formal signposting, but never use either expression as content-free decoration.
