An additive marker makes a promise to the reader: the next item or proposition belongs alongside something already established. أيضًا usually adds a nearby participant, action, or fact; كذلك often means “likewise” and highlights a parallel; بالإضافة إلى ذلك explicitly adds a whole further point. None of them means merely “the text continues.” The reader must be able to recover what is being added to what.
This is a discourse relation, not a replacement for clause syntax. Each clause still needs its own subject–predicate or verb–argument structure, and internal case comes from prepositions and syntactic roles. The marker tells the reader how that complete material relates to the preceding discourse; Coordinating Complete Sentences explains how و، فـ، ثمّ، and لكن connect the clauses themselves.
Choose the size of the addition

All three require an anaphoric anchor—something earlier that licenses “also.” ذلك in بالإضافة إلى ذلك points back to that earlier content. It often resumes an entire proposition, not a masculine object named in the previous sentence.
أيضًا: local addition and focus
Place أيضًا close enough to its focus that the intended alternative is clear. With a subject before it, the subject is naturally added to an established set of participants:
مها أيضا ستقدم ملخصا في الجلسة.
mahā ʾayḍan sa-tuqaddimu mulakhkhaṣan fī l-jalsa(h).
Maha too will present a summary during the session.
Late أيضًا can add another action or another object, depending on the preceding context:
سيترجم يوسف الملخص أيضا قبل النشر.
sa-yutarjimu yūsufu l-mulakhkhaṣa ʾayḍan qabla n-nashr.
Yusuf will translate the summary as well before publication.
The second sentence is incomplete as a discourse move without an anchor: perhaps Yusuf is already translating the full report, or perhaps someone has already translated the summary. Careful writing supplies that context rather than expecting the marker to invent it.
أيضًا does not itself coordinate two clauses. A conjunction or sentence boundary may still be needed:
راجعت ندى الأرقام، وأضافت أيضا ملاحظة عن تكاليف النقل.
rājaʿat nadā l-ʾarqāma, wa-ʾaḍāfat ʾayḍan mulāḥaẓatan ʿan takālīfi n-naql.
Nada reviewed the figures and also added a note about transport costs.
Here attached و performs clause coordination; أيضًا marks the second action as an addition to the first.
كذلك: a parallel, not merely one more object
كذلك is especially useful when the second proposition resembles the first in structure or implication. It can stand initially with an Arabic comma when it comments on a whole sentence, or occur inside the clause when tightly integrated.
تحتاج القاعة إلى نظام تهوية جديد. كذلك تحتاج إلى مخرج طوارئ إضافي.
taḥtāju l-qāʿatu ʾilā niẓāmi tahwiyatin jadīd. kadhālika taḥtāju ʾilā makhraji ṭawāriʾa ʾiḍāfiyy.
The hall needs a new ventilation system. Likewise, it needs an additional emergency exit.
يتحقق الموظف من الهوية، ويتحقق كذلك من صلاحية الوثيقة.
yataḥaqqaqu l-muwaẓẓafu mina l-huwiyya(h), wa-yataḥaqqaqu kadhālika min ṣalāḥiyyati l-wathīqa(h).
The employee verifies the identity and likewise checks that the document is valid.
In the first example, كذلك relates two complete sentences. In the second, it highlights parallel verification predicates inside one coordinated sentence. أيضًا would be possible in both, but كذلك draws stronger attention to the parallel manner or structure.
بالإضافة إلى ذلك: adding a new proposition explicitly
بالإضافة إلى ذلك is a detached discourse phrase meaning “in addition to that.” The attached بـ makes الإضافة genitive, and إلى introduces ذلك. Those are internal properties of the phrase; the following sentence receives its case and mood independently.
انخفضت مدة الانتظار هذا الشهر. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، ارتفعت نسبة الطلبات المكتملة.
inkhafaḍat muddatu l-intiẓāri hādhā sh-shahr. bi-l-ʾiḍāfati ʾilā dhālika, irtafaʿat nisbatu ṭ-ṭalabāti l-muktamila(h).
Waiting time fell this month. In addition, the proportion of completed applications rose.
The first sentence is the anchor; ذلك packages its content as the base to which the second improvement is added. A comma is natural after this long detached opener. By contrast, tightly integrated أيضًا normally is not isolated from its predicate by a comma.
The phrase also combines with a noun complement rather than referring back with ذلك:
بالإضافة إلى خفض الرسوم، وسعت الجامعة برنامج المنح.
bi-l-ʾiḍāfati ʾilā khafḍi r-rusūm, wassaʿati l-jāmiʿatu barnāmaja l-minaḥ.
In addition to reducing fees, the university expanded its scholarship program.
Here خفضِ is genitive after إلى. The opening phrase is not a complete sentence; وسعت الجامعة supplies the main predication.
From two bare sentences to a coherent link
Compare a simple sequence with an explicitly additive version:
افتتح المركز فرعا جديدا. زاد ساعات العمل المسائية.
iftataḥa l-markazu farʿan jadīdan. zāda sāʿāti l-ʿamali l-masāʾiyya(h).
The center opened a new branch. It increased its evening opening hours. (The relation is left implicit.)
افتتح المركز فرعا جديدا. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، زاد ساعات العمل المسائية.
iftataḥa l-markazu farʿan jadīdan. bi-l-ʾiḍāfati ʾilā dhālika, zāda sāʿāti l-ʿamali l-masāʾiyya(h).
The center opened a new branch. In addition, it increased its evening opening hours. (The second measure is explicitly added to the first.)
The marker does not improve the prose merely by being longer. It improves it only if addition is the intended logical relation. If the hours were expanded because the branch opened, a result marker would be more accurate; if the expansion happened despite opposition, a contrast marker would be better.
A coherent procedural paragraph
يسجل الموظف رقم الطلب في النظام، ويتحقق أيضا من عنوان مقدم الطلب. كذلك يقارن تاريخ الميلاد بالوثيقة الأصلية. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، يحفظ نسخة من الموافقة في الملف الإلكتروني قبل إغلاق المعاملة.
yusajjilu l-muwaẓẓafu raqma ṭ-ṭalabi fī n-niẓām, wa-yataḥaqqaqu ʾayḍan min ʿunwāni muqaddimi ṭ-ṭalab. kadhālika yuqārinu tārīkha l-mīlādi bi-l-wathīqati l-ʾaṣliyya(h). bi-l-ʾiḍāfati ʾilā dhālika, yaḥfaẓu nuskhatan mina l-muwāfaqati fī l-malaffi l-ʾiliktirūniyyi qabla ʾighlāqi l-muʿāmala(h).
The employee records the application number in the system and also verifies the applicant's address. Likewise, the employee compares the date of birth with the original document. In addition, the employee saves a copy of the approval in the electronic file before closing the case. (Formal procedure.)
Each marker earns its place: أيضًا adds a second check inside one sentence, كذلك introduces a parallel verification, and بالإضافة إلى ذلك adds a further record-keeping step. Repeating the longest marker before every sentence would make the procedure heavier, not clearer.
Punctuation and register
أيضًا and integrated كذلك usually need no comma between themselves and the predicate. Initial sentence-level كذلك may take ، when it is detached, especially before a longer clause. بالإضافة إلى ذلك is normally followed by ، as a substantial opening frame. A full stop before it is often clearer than adding it to an already long chain of و clauses.
All three are current formal MSA. بالإضافة إلى ذلك is especially common in reports, explanations, and academic or administrative writing (formal/academic). It can sound padded in a short message where أيضًا or a simple و states the relation efficiently.
Common Mistakes
Joining every sentence with و
❌ انتهى الفحص وظهرت مشكلة واحتاج الجهاز إلى قطعة جديدة وطلبناها.
Hard to follow—repeated و leaves addition, consequence, and sequence undifferentiated.
✅ انتهى الفحص، وظهرت مشكلة في المحرك. لذلك احتاج الجهاز إلى قطعة جديدة، فطلبناها.
intahā l-faḥṣu, wa-ẓaharat mushkilatun fī l-muḥarrik. li-dhālika ḥtāja l-jihāzu ʾilā qiṭʿatin jadīda(h), fa-ṭalabnāhā.
The inspection ended, and a problem appeared in the engine. Therefore, the device needed a new part, so we ordered it.
Translating every English connector with an additive marker
❌ ارتفعت التكلفة، بالإضافة إلى ذلك ألغينا المشروع.
Misleading if the cancellation resulted from the higher cost—‘in addition’ presents two parallel facts, not cause and result.
✅ ارتفعت التكلفة، ولذلك ألغينا المشروع قبل توقيع العقد.
irtafaʿati t-taklifatu, wa-li-dhālika ʾalghaynā l-mashrūʿa qabla tawqīʿi l-ʿaqd.
The cost rose, so we canceled the project before signing the contract.
Confusing لكن with لكنّ while changing relations
❌ التقرير واضح، لكن أن النتائج تحتاج إلى شرح أيضا.
Incorrect—do not combine contrastive لكن with a redundant أن before this nominal clause.
✅ التقرير واضح، لكن النتائج تحتاج أيضا إلى شرح.
at-taqrīru wāḍiḥ, lākinna n-natāʾija taḥtāju ʾayḍan ʾilā sharḥ.
The report is clear, but the results also need explanation.
Using a formal marker as empty padding
❌ بالإضافة إلى ذلك، وصل القطار. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، نزلنا. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، مشينا.
Grammatical words, but poor discourse—each marker promises a meaningful added point and the repetition obscures a simple sequence.
✅ وصل القطار، ثم نزلنا ومشينا إلى الفندق.
waṣala l-qiṭāru, thumma nazalnā wa-mashaynā ʾilā l-funduq.
The train arrived; then we got off and walked to the hotel.
