Contrast: لكن، غير أنّ، مع ذلك

A contrast marker tells the reader that the next proposition resists an expectation created by what came before. لكن commonly corrects or contrasts; غير أنّ introduces a formally framed qualification; مع ذلك means “nevertheless/despite that” and points back to a whole preceding fact. These are not interchangeable decorations for English but or however: each makes a slightly different promise and builds a different clause.

The key grammatical distinction is between bare لكنْ, which can introduce a verbal correction, and heavy لكنّ, which opens a nominal clause and governs its noun in the accusative. Unvocalized spelling hides the difference, so syntax must reveal it. The dedicated لكن clause page develops the full syntax; here the focus is how the contrast organizes discourse.

Three ways to redirect the reader

MarkerRelationFollowing structureRegister
لكنْdirect contrast or correctionoften a verbal clause; no case government of its ownneutral/formal
لكنّcontrast with an explicit nominal clauseits noun or attached pronoun is accusativeneutral/formal
غير أنّformal qualification or counterpointأنّ introduces a nominal clause and governs its nounformal/academic
مع ذلكnevertheless, despite the preceding factdetached phrase followed by an independent clauseneutral/formal

A marker needs an anaphoric anchor. In مع ذلك, ذلك packages the earlier situation as the obstacle that failed to prevent the next result. If nothing earlier creates a relevant expectation, “nevertheless” is empty.

لكنْ: direct correction with a verbal clause

Bare لكنْ is particularly natural after negation when the second clause replaces an incorrect inference. It does not assign accusative case to a following subject; the following clause has its own syntax.

لم يرفض المدير الاقتراح، لكن طلب توضيحا إضافيا.

lam yarfuḍi l-mudīru l-iqtirāḥ, lākin ṭalaba tawḍīḥan ʾiḍāfiyyā.

The director did not reject the proposal, but asked for additional clarification.

The second clause corrects a likely inference from the lack of immediate approval: no rejection occurred; a request did. The continuing subject is recoverable from the verb, so Arabic does not need an independent pronoun equivalent to English he.

Bare لكنْ can also contrast two complete verbal clauses with different subjects:

وصل الركاب في موعدهم، لكن تأخرت الحافلة عشر دقائق.

waṣala r-rukkābu fī mawʿidihim, lākin taʾakhkharati l-ḥāfilatu ʿashra daqāʾiq.

The passengers arrived on time, but the bus was ten minutes late.

The nominative subject الحافلةُ gets its case from the verbal clause. Bare لكنْ does not govern it.

لكنّ: a new nominal clause with case government

Heavy لكنّ introduces a nominal clause. Its noun is accusative; its predicate remains in the normal predicate structure. An attached pronoun often resumes a previously mentioned referent.

الخطة بسيطة، لكنها مكلفة في مرحلتها الأولى.

al-khuṭṭatu basīṭa(h), lākinnahā muklifatun fī marḥalatihā l-ʾūlā.

The plan is simple, but it is expensive in its first stage.

انتهت المفاوضات، لكن الاتفاق النهائي لم يوقع بعد.

intahati l-mufāwaḍāt, lākinna l-ittifāqa n-nihāʾiyya lam yuwaqqaʿ baʿd.

The negotiations ended, but the final agreement has not yet been signed.

In the first example, attached ـها is the noun of لكنّ and refers back to the plan. In the second, الاتفاقَ النهائيَّ is its explicit accusative noun. The following verbal sentence لم يوقّع بعد functions as the predicate of that nominal clause.

💡
After unvocalized لكن, inspect what follows. A verb can follow bare لكنْ directly; an explicit noun or attached pronoun normally signals heavy لكنّ, whose noun is accusative.

غير أنّ: a formal qualification

غير أنّ often corresponds to “however,” “except that,” or “but.” It is common in reports, essays, and analytical prose (formal/academic). The أنّ portion opens a content-like nominal clause and makes its noun accusative.

تدعم البيانات الفرضية الأساسية، غير أن حجم العينة صغير.

tadʿamu l-bayānātu l-faraḍiyyata l-ʾasāsiyya(h), ghayra ʾanna ḥajma l-ʿayyinati ṣaghīr.

The data support the main hypothesis; however, the sample size is small. (Academic.)

أكملت الشركة معظم الأعمال، غير أنها لم تختبر نظام الإنذار.

ʾakmalati sh-sharikatu muʿẓama l-ʾaʿmāl, ghayra ʾannahā lam takhtabir niẓāma l-ʾindhār.

The company completed most of the work; however, it did not test the alarm system. (Formal.)

This marker often sounds more written and deliberative than plain لكن. It is useful for limiting a claim after first granting its main force. It should not be inserted merely to make an ordinary sentence sound elevated.

مع ذلك: the obstacle did not produce the expected outcome

مع ذلك literally packages the prior content as something the next proposition holds “with/despite.” It is typically detached at the start of a sentence and followed by ،. The second sentence could stand alone grammatically; the phrase supplies its discourse relation.

كان الطريق مغلقا بسبب الثلج. مع ذلك، وصل فريق الإسعاف في الوقت المناسب.

kāna ṭ-ṭarīqu mughlaqan bi-sababi th-thalj. maʿa dhālika, waṣala farīqu l-ʾisʿāfi fī l-waqti l-munāsib.

The road was closed because of the snow. Nevertheless, the ambulance team arrived in time.

The closure creates the expectation of a delay; arrival in time defeats it. Compare an integrated later position:

واصل الفريق، مع ذلك، عمله حتى منتصف الليل.

wāṣala l-farīqu, maʿa dhālika, ʿamalahu ḥattā muntaṣafi l-layl.

The team nevertheless continued its work until midnight. (Parenthetical placement.)

The two commas mark a parenthetical interruption. Initial placement is clearer for learners and for dense prose. Do not insert a comma between مع and ذلك; they form one phrase.

Near-synonyms do not package contrast identically

Compare a direct correction with a counter-expectation across two sentences:

لم تنخفض المبيعات، لكن تباطأ نموها في الربع الأخير.

lam tankhafiḍi l-mabīʿāt, lākin tabāṭaʾa numūwuhā fī r-rubʿi l-ʾakhīr.

Sales did not fall, but their growth slowed in the final quarter. (Direct correction.)

تباطأ نمو المبيعات في الربع الأخير. مع ذلك، حققت الشركة هدفها السنوي.

tabāṭaʾa numūwu l-mabīʿāti fī r-rubʿi l-ʾakhīr. maʿa dhālika, ḥaqqaqati sh-sharikatu hadafahā s-sanawiyy.

Sales growth slowed in the final quarter. Nevertheless, the company met its annual target. (An expected negative outcome did not follow.)

لكنْ directly replaces “sales fell” with a more accurate claim. مع ذلك concedes the slowdown and denies its expected consequence. غير أنّ could introduce either qualification in formal prose, but would frame it as an authorial reservation.

From juxtaposition to a coherent argument

النسخة الجديدة أسرع من السابقة. تستهلك ذاكرة أكبر.

an-nuskhatu l-jadīdatu ʾasraʿu mina s-sābiqa(h). tastahliku dhākiratan ʾakbar.

The new version is faster than the previous one. It uses more memory. (The relation is implicit.)

النسخة الجديدة أسرع من السابقة، غير أنها تستهلك ذاكرة أكبر. مع ذلك، يوصي الفريق بتثبيتها لأن التحسن في الأداء كبير.

an-nuskhatu l-jadīdatu ʾasraʿu mina s-sābiqa(h), ghayra ʾannahā tastahliku dhākiratan ʾakbar. maʿa dhālika, yūṣī l-farīqu bi-tathbītihā li-ʾanna t-taḥassuna fī l-ʾadāʾi kabīr.

The new version is faster than the previous one, although it uses more memory. Nevertheless, the team recommends installing it because the performance improvement is substantial. (Formal evaluation.)

The paragraph contains two different expectations: greater speed is qualified by higher memory use; that drawback might discourage installation, but the recommendation still follows. Repeating لكن would conceal this layered reasoning.

Punctuation and register

A comma commonly precedes لكن or غير أنّ when substantial clauses are contrasted. A semicolon ؛ is useful when both sides are long or internally punctuated. Sentence-initial مع ذلك normally takes a following Arabic comma. Punctuation marks the size of the units; it does not supply the contrast on its own.

Plain لكن is the broadest current MSA choice. غير أنّ is distinctly formal and frequent in academic or editorial writing. مع ذلك is neutral formal MSA and readily spans a full-stop boundary. None is archaic, but all can become empty padding when the preceding statement creates no defeated expectation.

Common Mistakes

Using و where the reader needs a contrast

❌ الخدمة سريعة، وهي غير متاحة مساء.

Grammatical addition, but it hides the relevant counter-expectation between good speed and limited availability.

✅ الخدمة سريعة، لكنها غير متاحة بعد السادسة مساء.

al-khidmatu sarīʿa(h), lākinnahā ghayru mutāḥatin baʿda s-sādisati masāʾ.

The service is fast, but it is unavailable after six in the evening.

Translating however and therefore with one invariant marker

❌ نفد الوقود، مع ذلك توقفت السيارة.

Wrong relation—the car stopped as a result of the fuel running out, not despite it.

✅ نفد الوقود، ولذلك توقفت السيارة قرب المحطة.

nafida l-waqūdu, wa-li-dhālika tawaqqafati s-sayyāratu qurba l-maḥaṭṭa(h).

The fuel ran out, so the car stopped near the station.

Confusing bare لكنْ with heavy لكنّ

❌ لم يتأخر القطار، لكن إن السائق انتظر راكبا مريضا.

Incorrect—do not stack لكن and إن to build the contrasting nominal clause; use heavy لكنّ directly.

✅ لم يتأخر القطار، لكن السائق انتظر راكبا مريضا.

lam yataʾakhkhari l-qiṭār, lākinna s-sāʾiqa ntaẓara rākiban marīḍā.

The train was not delayed, but the driver waited for a sick passenger. (Heavy لكنّ introduces السائقَ.)

Adding contrastive padding without an expectation

❌ يبدأ الدوام في الثامنة. مع ذلك، ينتهي في الرابعة.

The hours are simply two parts of a schedule; no obstacle or defeated expectation licenses ‘nevertheless.’

✅ يبدأ الدوام في الثامنة وينتهي في الرابعة.

yabdaʾu d-dawāmu fī th-thāminati wa-yantahī fī r-rābiʿa(h).

The working day begins at eight and ends at four.

Key Takeaways

  • Contrast markers promise a correction, qualification, or defeated expectation—not merely a new sentence.
  • Bare لكنْ can precede a verbal clause; heavy لكنّ and غير أنّ introduce nominal clauses and govern an accusative noun.
  • مع ذلك points back to a prior obstacle and normally frames a new independent proposition.
  • Use غير أنّ for a formal analytical qualification and label its written tone appropriately.
  • Choose cause, result, addition, or sequence when those relations are more accurate than contrast.
