Concession: رغم ذلك، ومع أنّ، إلا أنّ

A concession accepts a fact that could support one expectation, then asserts that the expectation does not determine the outcome. Modern Standard Arabic can make this relation between complete sentences with رغم ذلك “despite that / nevertheless,” or build it inside a larger sentence with مع أنّ “although” and a main clause often introduced by فإنّ or إلا أنّ. The relation is logical: the first proposition remains true, but it proves insufficient.

These forms are not interchangeable pieces of punctuation. رغم ذلك points anaphorically to prior discourse and functions as a sentence-level connective. مع أنّ embeds a conceded proposition and contains heavy أنّ, with its accusative noun. إلا أنّ introduces the countervailing assertion, especially in the paired pattern مع أنّ ... إلا أنّ .... All three are common in contemporary (formal) prose; the paired structure is particularly characteristic of planned argument and institutional writing.

One fact, an expected result, and the actual result

Consider two facts presented independently:

كانت الميزانية محدودة. أكملت المؤسسة المشروع في موعده.

kānati l-mīzāniyyatu maḥdūda(h). ʾakmalati l-muʾassasatu l-mashrūʿa fī mawʿidih.

The budget was limited. The organization completed the project on schedule.

كانت الميزانية محدودة. ورغم ذلك، أكملت المؤسسة المشروع في موعده.

kānati l-mīzāniyyatu maḥdūda(h). wa-raghma dhālika, ʾakmalati l-muʾassasatu l-mashrūʿa fī mawʿidih.

The budget was limited. Despite that, the organization completed the project on schedule.

The second version instructs the reader to construct an expectation—limited funds might delay the work—and then cancel it. رغم ذلك does not deny that the budget was limited. Initial و links the new sentence to the preceding discourse; it does not create the concession by itself.

💡
A concessive marker promises “what I have just acknowledged will not win.” Name the likely expectation before you write the main clause. If no plausible expectation exists, the relation is probably addition rather than concession.

رغم ذلك: a backward-pointing sentence connector

Internally, رغمَ is accusative and forms an iḍāfa with demonstrative ذلك, which is in the genitive slot even though its ending does not visibly change. The expression means “despite that,” where ذلك resumes a preceding event, fact, or argument. It does not introduce a following أنّ-clause in this fixed use.

أوصى الخبراء بتأجيل الإطلاق. رغم ذلك، قررت الإدارة الالتزام بالموعد الأصلي.

ʾawṣā l-khubarāʾu bi-taʾjīli l-ʾiṭlāq. raghma dhālika, qarrarati l-ʾidāratu l-iltizāma bil-mawʿidi l-ʾaṣliyy.

The experts recommended postponing the launch. Nevertheless, management decided to keep the original date. (Formal report.)

The antecedent of ذلك is the whole recommendation, not one noun. A full stop is natural because both propositions are independently substantial. A semicolon also works:

لم تكن النتائج حاسمة؛ ورغم ذلك، قدمت الدراسة أدلة تستحق المناقشة.

lam takuni n-natāʾiju ḥāsimatan; wa-raghma dhālika, qaddamati d-dirāsatu ʾadillatan tastaḥiqqu l-munāqasha(h).

The results were not conclusive; nevertheless, the study presented evidence worth discussing. (Academic.)

The linker commonly appears at the beginning of its sentence. Medial parenthetical placement is possible but heavier:

قررت اللجنة، رغم ذلك، نشر الملخص الأولي.

qarrarati l-lajnatu, raghma dhālika, nashra l-mulakhkhaṣi l-ʾawwaliyy.

The committee nevertheless decided to publish the preliminary summary.

Paired commas mark sentence-level scope. In long prose, initial position is normally easier to process.

مع أنّ: embed the acknowledged obstacle

مع أنّ introduces a finite conceded proposition. Heavy أنّ makes its noun accusative, while a verb in its predicate receives mood only from a local governor. The expression may begin a sentence, or و may attach it to prior discourse as ومع أنّ.

مع أن الطريق كان مزدحما، وصلت الحافلة في موعدها.

maʿa ʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa kāna muzdaḥiman, waṣalati l-ḥāfilatu fī mawʿidihā.

Although the road was congested, the bus arrived on time.

الطريقَ is accusative as the noun of أنّ. كان مزدحمًا is its predicate. The comma helps close the preposed concessive frame, but it neither assigns case nor creates the relation.

Postposed مع أنّ qualifies an already stated outcome:

وافقت اللجنة على الخطة، مع أن عضوين سجلا اعتراضهما رسميا.

wāfaqati l-lajnatu ʿalā l-khuṭṭa(h), maʿa ʾanna ʿuḍwayni sajjalā ʿtirāḍahumā rasmiyyan.

The committee approved the plan, although two members formally recorded their objection.

Here dual عضوين is the accusative noun of أنّ. Its following verbal predicate resumes it with dual agreement in سجلا; syntactically, that complete verbal sentence is the predicate of أنّ.

For a fuller treatment of finite and nominal concessive complements, see Concession with رغم أن، مع أنّ، على الرغم من. The present page focuses on how the marker organizes a passage.

إلا أنّ: introduce the counterweight

In مع أنّ ... إلا أنّ ..., the first clause concedes the obstacle and the second presents the claim that survives it. إلا أنّ is not an ordinary noun exception here. It functions as a formal counter-expectation linker close to “yet / nevertheless / the fact remains that.” Heavy أنّ makes the following noun accusative.

مع أن الخطة أقل تكلفة، إلا أن تنفيذها يحتاج إلى وقت أطول.

maʿa ʾanna l-khuṭṭata ʾaqallu taklifatan, ʾillā ʾanna tanfīdhahā yaḥtāju ʾilā waqtin ʾaṭwal.

Although the plan is less expensive, implementing it requires more time. (Formal comparison.)

The two heavy-أنّ clauses have separate case frames: الخطةَ is the noun of the first, and تنفيذَها is the noun of the second. Neither مع nor إلا makes the imperfect يحتاجُ subjunctive.

إلا أنّ can also add a reservation after an assertion without an overt مع أنّ clause, especially in formal prose:

تبدو المؤشرات إيجابية، إلا أن العينة ما زالت صغيرة.

tabdū l-muʾashshirātu ʾījābiyya(h), ʾillā ʾanna l-ʿayyinata mā zālat ṣaghīra(h).

The indicators appear positive, although the sample is still small. (Formal reservation.)

This resembles a contrast introduced by heavy لكنّ, but إلا أنّ frames the second proposition more explicitly as a limiting reservation. It should not be inserted merely as a prestigious equivalent of every English but.

💡
After مع أنّ or إلا أنّ, parse heavy أنّ locally: find its accusative noun first, then analyze the tense and mood inside its predicate.

تأخر تسليم الأجهزة أسبوعين. ورغم ذلك، بدأ التدريب في الموعد، لأن الفريق استخدم أجهزة تجريبية. ومع أن هذا الحل لم يكن مثاليا، إلا أنه أتاح للموظفين تعلم الخطوات الأساسية قبل وصول المعدات الجديدة.

taʾakhkhara taslīmu l-ʾajhizati ʾusbūʿayn. wa-raghma dhālika, badaʾa t-tadrību fī l-mawʿid, liʾanna l-farīqa stakhdama ʾajhizatan tajrībiyya(h). wa-maʿa ʾanna hādhā l-ḥalla lam yakun mithāliyyan, ʾillā ʾannahu ʾatāḥa lil-muwaẓẓafīna taʿalluma l-khuṭuwāti l-ʾasāsiyyati qabla wuṣūli l-muʿaddāti l-jadīda(h).

Delivery of the equipment was delayed by two weeks. Nevertheless, training began on schedule because the team used test equipment. Although this solution was not ideal, it allowed employees to learn the basic steps before the new equipment arrived. (Coherent formal paragraph.)

The first concession spans sentences. The second is embedded and explicitly balanced by إلا أنّه. Causal لأنّ explains how the unexpected outcome became possible; it does not compete with the concessive relation.

Common Mistakes

Joining everything with و

❌ كانت البيانات ناقصة، ونشرت اللجنة النتائج.

Wa only adds the publication; it does not mark it as unexpected despite incomplete data.

✅ كانت البيانات ناقصة؛ ورغم ذلك، نشرت اللجنة النتائج الأولية.

kānati l-bayānātu nāqiṣa(h); wa-raghma dhālika, nasharati l-lajnatu n-natāʾija l-ʾawwaliyyata.

The data were incomplete; nevertheless, the committee published the preliminary results.

Translating “however” or “therefore” mechanically

❌ انقطعت الكهرباء، ورغم ذلك توقف النظام.

Incorrect relation if the outage caused the shutdown—the shutdown is an expected result, not a counter-expectation.

✅ انقطعت الكهرباء؛ لذلك توقف النظام مؤقتا.

inqaṭaʿati l-kahrabāʾ; lidhālika tawaqqafa n-niẓāmu muʾaqqatan.

The power went out; therefore, the system stopped temporarily.

Ignoring heavy أنّ after مع and إلا

❌ مع أن الموظفون يعملوا عن بعد، إلا أن الحضور مرتفع.

Incorrect hybrid—heavy anna requires accusative الموظفينَ and an indicative predicate يعملونَ; the second noun الحضورَ is also accusative after anna.

✅ مع أن الموظفين يعملون عن بعد، إلا أن الحضور في الاجتماعات مرتفع.

maʿa ʾanna l-muwaẓẓafīna yaʿmalūna ʿan buʿdin, ʾillā ʾanna l-ḥuḍūra fī l-ijtimāʿāti murtafiʿ.

Although the employees work remotely, attendance at meetings is high.

Confusing light لكنْ and heavy لكنّ

❌ النتائج واعدة، لكن ها تستند إلى عينة صغيرة.

Incorrect—attached ها is the noun of heavy lakinna and must be joined to the particle as لكنها.

✅ النتائج واعدة، لكنها تستند إلى عينة صغيرة.

an-natāʾiju wāʿida(h), lākinnahā tastanidu ʾilā ʿayyinatin ṣaghīra(h).

The results are promising, but they are based on a small sample.

Using concession as empty formal padding

❌ ورغم ذلك، يبدأ التقرير بعرض المنهج.

Empty opening—ذلك has no preceding proposition to resume and no expectation to cancel.

✅ لا يقدم التقرير توصية نهائية. ورغم ذلك، يبدأ بعرض منهج واضح للمقارنة.

lā yuqaddimu t-taqrīru tawṣiyatan nihāʾiyya(h). wa-raghma dhālika, yabdaʾu bi-ʿarḍi manhajin wāḍiḥin lil-muqārana(h).

The report offers no final recommendation. Nevertheless, it begins by presenting a clear method of comparison.

Key Takeaways

  • رغم ذلك is a backward-pointing sentence connector; ذلك must have a clear antecedent.
  • مع أنّ embeds the acknowledged obstacle, and heavy أنّ governs its own accusative noun.
  • إلا أنّ can balance مع أنّ or introduce a formal limiting reservation; it is not an all-purpose translation of but.
  • Concession accepts a proposition while canceling its expected consequence. Cause, result, and addition make different promises.
  • Punctuation displays the architecture, but only the markers and clause syntax create it.
