A concessive expression acknowledges a fact that might normally lead to one result, then asserts that a different result holds anyway: “although the road was long, we arrived early.” In Modern Standard Arabic, رغم أنّ and مع أنّ introduce a finite proposition, while على الرغم من most naturally takes a noun, pronoun, or verbal noun and can be extended with heavy أنّ before a proposition.
Because all the finite patterns here use heavy أنّ, أنّ + content clauses provides the fuller account of its internal noun-and-predicate case frame.
The concessive linker does not make its predicate subjunctive. Heavy أنّ assigns accusative to its own noun; any verb inside the predicate gets its mood from its own local environment.
Build the unexpected contrast
Begin with an apparent obstacle and an outcome:
كان الطريق طويلا. وصلنا قبل الغروب.
kāna ṭ-ṭarīqu ṭawīlan. waṣalnā qabla l-ghurūb.
The road was long. We arrived before sunset.
The facts become concessive when the first is presented as an insufficient obstacle:
مع أن الطريق كان طويلا ومتعرجا، وصلنا قبل الغروب.
maʿa ʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa kāna ṭawīlan wa-mutaʿarrijan, waṣalnā qabla l-ghurūb.
Although the road was long and winding, we arrived before sunset.
Heavy أنّ makes الطريقَ accusative. The verb كان is perfect and has no mood contrast. The two clauses have different subjects, which is completely normal: concession compares propositions, not grammatical persons.
رغم أنّ: a compact finite concession
رغم أنّ means “although / despite the fact that” and is common in contemporary formal prose and speech. It may precede the main assertion as a frame or follow it as a qualification.
رغم أن المطر كان غزيرا، استمر العمل في الموقع حتى المساء.
raghma ʾanna l-maṭara kāna ghazīran, istamarra l-ʿamalu fī l-mawqiʿi ḥattā l-masāʾ.
Although the rain was heavy, work at the site continued until evening.
استمر العمل في الموقع حتى المساء رغم أن المطر كان غزيرا.
istamarra l-ʿamalu fī l-mawqiʿi ḥattā l-masāʾi raghma ʾanna l-maṭara kāna ghazīran.
Work at the site continued until evening although the rain was heavy.
The first order makes the obstacle the interpretive frame and normally takes a comma after the clause. The second foregrounds the surprising result and adds the obstacle afterward; a comma is not obligatory before a short integrated final phrase.
An internal verbal predicate remains indicative when it has no other governor:
رغم أن الموظفين يعملون عن بعد، يحضرون الاجتماع الأسبوعي في المقر.
raghma ʾanna l-muwaẓẓafīna yaʿmalūna ʿan buʿdin, yaḥḍurūna l-ijtimāʿa l-ʾusbūʿiyya fī l-maqarr.
Although the employees work remotely, they attend the weekly meeting at headquarters.
The noun of أنّ is accusative الموظفينَ. Predicate يعملونَ retains its indicative five-verb nūn. Heavy أنّ governs nominal case, not verbal mood.
مع أنّ: “even with the fact that”
مع أنّ also means “although,” literally packaging the conceded proposition as something that accompanies the main assertion without preventing it. It is neutral in formal MSA and often slightly lighter than the longer على الرغم من أنّ.
مع أن الخطة مكلفة، فإنها أقل كلفة من استمرار الأعطال.
maʿa ʾanna l-khuṭṭata muklifatun, fa-ʾinnahā ʾaqallu kulfatan mina stimrāri l-ʾaʿṭāl.
Although the plan is expensive, it is less costly than allowing the failures to continue. (Formal argument.)
The main clause uses فإنّها to resume after a longer preposed frame. This resumptive فـ is particularly helpful in formal prose, though a simple verbal main clause often needs no such marker.
وافقت اللجنة على المقترح، مع أن بعض أعضائها أبدوا تحفظات جدية.
wāfaqati l-lajnatu ʿalā l-muqtaraḥi, maʿa ʾanna baʿḍa ʾaʿḍāʾihā ʾabdaw taḥaffuẓātin jiddiyya(h).
The committee approved the proposal, although some of its members expressed serious reservations.
Perfect أبدوا is selected because the reservations were expressed as completed acts, not because مع أنّ imposes past time. The concessive clause can equally contain present or future reference.
على الرغم من: nominal concession
على الرغم من means “despite / in spite of” and selects a genitive complement after من. It is explicit and common in careful formal writing. A noun, pronoun, or verbal noun lets the writer package the obstacle compactly.
على الرغم من ازدحام الطريق، وصلت الحافلة في موعدها.
ʿalā r-raghmi mina zdihāmi ṭ-ṭarīqi, waṣalati l-ḥāfilatu fī mawʿidihā.
Despite the traffic congestion, the bus arrived on time.
على الرغم من إصابته، أكمل اللاعب المباراة بعد موافقة الطبيب.
ʿalā r-raghmi min ʾiṣābatihi, ʾakmala l-lāʿibu l-mubārāta baʿda muwāfaqati ṭ-ṭabīb.
Despite his injury, the player finished the match after receiving the doctor's approval.
The attached pronoun belongs to إصابة, not directly to من. When a full proposition is needed, من أنّ can introduce a heavy-أنّ clause:
على الرغم من أن المهندسين لم يستطيعوا فحص كل جزء، أكدوا أن النظام الأساسي يعمل بأمان.
ʿalā r-raghmi min ʾanna l-muhandisīna lam yastaṭīʿū faḥṣa kulli juzʾin, ʾakkadū ʾanna n-niẓāma l-ʾasāsiyya yaʿmalu biʾamān.
Although the engineers could not inspect every component, they confirmed that the core system operates safely. (Formal technical report.)
المهندسينَ is accusative after heavy أنّ. Five-verb يستطيعوا has no nūn because لم locally governs the jussive. The concessive expression itself does not delete it.
Finite versus nominal packaging
Finite clauses preserve a full proposition; nominal complements condense the obstacle. The alternatives are often close but not identical.
| Construction | Complement | Case or mood | Typical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| رغم أنّ | finite nominal proposition | noun of أنّ accusative | compact “although” |
| مع أنّ | finite nominal proposition | noun of أنّ accusative | acknowledged accompanying fact |
| على الرغم من | noun / verbal noun | genitive after من | explicit formal “despite” |
| على الرغم من أنّ | finite nominal proposition | noun of أنّ accusative internally | explicit formal “despite the fact that” |
رغم أن الفريق تأخر في البداية، أنهى جميع الاختبارات في الموعد.
raghma ʾanna l-farīqa taʾakhkhara fī l-bidāyati, ʾanhā jamīʿa l-ikhtibārāti fī l-mawʿid.
Although the team was delayed at first, it completed all the tests on schedule.
على الرغم من تأخر الفريق في البداية، أنجز جميع الاختبارات في الموعد.
ʿalā r-raghmi min taʾakhkhuri l-farīqi fī l-bidāyati, ʾanjaza jamīʿa l-ikhtibārāti fī l-mawʿid.
Despite the team's initial delay, it completed all the tests on schedule. (More nominal and compact.)
The finite version explicitly predicates delay of the team. The maṣdar تأخر packages the same situation as an obstacle and can sound more administrative.
Time reference is independent of concession
A past reporting verb does not automatically push every concessive clause into the past. Use the form that matches the real timeline.
أوضحت الوزارة أن الخدمة ستبدأ غدا رغم أن بعض المراكز لا تملك المعدات اللازمة حتى الآن.
ʾawḍaḥati l-wizāratu ʾanna l-khidmata satabdaʾu ghadan raghma ʾanna baʿḍa l-marākizi lā tamliku l-muʿaddāti l-lāzimata ḥattā l-ʾān.
The ministry explained that the service will begin tomorrow although some centers still do not have the necessary equipment.
Present لا تملكُ is correct because حتى الآن makes the shortage current. A past English reporting verb does not license mechanical Arabic backshift.
A formal paragraph
على الرغم من أن الدراسة شملت عددا محدودا من المشاركين، فإن نتائجها تقدم مؤشرات مهمة. ومع أن الباحثين لا يعدونها دليلا نهائيا، فقد نشروا البيانات كاملة كي يستطيع المختصون مراجعتها؛ ورغم استمرار بعض أوجه القصور، ستبدأ مرحلة أوسع في الخريف المقبل.
ʿalā r-raghmi min ʾanna d-dirāsata shamilat ʿadadan maḥdūdan mina l-mushārikīna, fa-ʾinna natāʾijahā tuqaddimu muʾashshirātin muhimma(h). wa-maʿa ʾanna l-bāḥithīna lā yaʿuddūnahā dalīlan nihāʾiyyan, fa-qad nasharū l-bayānāti kāmilatan kay yastaṭīʿa l-mukhtaṣṣūna murājaʿatahā; wa-raghma stimrāri baʿḍi ʾawjuhi l-quṣūri, satabdaʾu marḥalatun ʾawsaʿu fī l-kharīfi l-muqbil.
Although the study included a limited number of participants, its results offer important indicators. Although the researchers do not regard it as definitive evidence, they published the full data so specialists can review them; despite some continuing limitations, a broader phase will begin next autumn. (Formal academic prose.)
The paragraph alternates finite and nominal concessions. Resumptive فإنّ and فقد guide readers from long preposed frames into their main assertions.
Common Mistakes
Copying English “despite of” or dropping من
❌ على الرغم ازدحام الطريق، وصلنا مبكرا.
Incorrect—على الرغم requires من before its nominal complement.
✅ على الرغم من ازدحام الطريق، وصلنا قبل بدء الاجتماع.
ʿalā r-raghmi mina zdihāmi ṭ-ṭarīqi, waṣalnā qabla badʾi l-ijtimāʿ.
Despite the traffic congestion, we arrived before the meeting began.
Merging light أنْ and heavy أنّ
❌ رغم أن الموظفون يعملوا عن بعد، يحضرون أسبوعيا.
Incorrect hybrid—a noun follows, so heavy أنّ requires accusative الموظفينَ and an indicative predicate يعملونَ.
✅ رغم أن الموظفين يعملون عن بعد، يحضرون إلى المقر أسبوعيا.
raghma ʾanna l-muwaẓẓafīna yaʿmalūna ʿan buʿdin, yaḥḍurūna ʾilā l-maqarri ʾusbūʿiyyan.
Although the employees work remotely, they come to headquarters weekly.
Letting the concessive linker govern mood
❌ مع أن الفريق يستطيع إكمال العمل، طلب مهلة إضافية.
maʿa ʾanna l-farīqa yastaṭīʿa ʾikmāla l-ʿamal
Incorrect reading—without a mood governor, يستطيع is indicative yastaṭīʿu.
✅ مع أن الفريق يستطيع إكمال العمل، طلب مهلة لإجراء اختبار إضافي.
maʿa ʾanna l-farīqa yastaṭīʿu ʾikmāla l-ʿamali, ṭalaba muhlatan li-ʾijrāʾi khtibārin ʾiḍāfiyy.
Although the team can complete the work, it requested time for an additional test.
Joining obstacle and result with a comma alone
❌ كانت الميزانية محدودة، اشترينا المعدات الأساسية.
Incorrect for an intended concession—the comma does not mean 'although.'
✅ رغم أن الميزانية كانت محدودة، اشترينا المعدات الأساسية.
raghma ʾanna l-mīzāniyyata kānat maḥdūdatan, ishtaraynā l-muʿaddāti l-ʾasāsiyya(h).
Although the budget was limited, we bought the essential equipment.
Omitting resumptive فـ and backshifting mechanically
❌ إن استمر العمل رغم نقص التمويل كانت النتيجة جيدة الآن.
Incorrect—the nominal result of إن needs فـ, and past كانت conflicts with a result that is good now.
✅ إن استمر العمل رغم نقص التمويل، فالنتيجة جيدة حتى الآن.
ʾini stamarra l-ʿamalu raghma naqṣi t-tamwīli, fa-nnatījatu jayyidatun ḥattā l-ʾān.
If work has continued despite the funding shortage, the result is good so far.
Key Takeaways
- رغم أنّ and مع أنّ introduce finite propositions; heavy أنّ makes its noun accusative but does not govern predicate mood.
- على الرغم من takes a genitive nominal complement; add heavy أنّ when a full proposition must follow.
- Preposed concessions frame an obstacle; postposed concessions qualify an already foregrounded result.
- Finite clauses preserve tense, polarity, and participants, while maṣdars package the obstacle compactly.
- Concession accepts the obstacle as true but denies that its expected consequence wins.
