Arabic institutions use both the Gregorian calendar (التقويم الميلادي) and the Hijri calendar (التقويم الهجري), sometimes side by side. The grammar of a date is manageable: an ordinal day, a month name, a cardinal year, and—when needed—an era label. The harder part is institutional: Gregorian month vocabulary varies by country, and a Hijri conversion depends on the calendar method or the competent authority.
Do not memorize one date converter as “the Arabic calendar.” First identify the calendar, regional month set, and issuing institution.
The two calendars measure different cycles
The Gregorian calendar is solar. Its year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year, and its month dates stay in roughly the same season. The Hijri calendar is lunar. Its twelve months total 354 or 355 days, so a Hijri date moves about ten or eleven Gregorian days earlier from one solar year to the next.
تبدأ السنة الميلادية في يناير وتنتهي في ديسمبر.
tabdaʾu s-sanatu l-mīlādiyyatu fī yanāyir wa-tantahī fī dīsambar.
The Gregorian year begins in January and ends in December.
يأتي رمضان في موسم مختلف مع مرور السنين.
yaʾtī ramaḍānu fī mawsimin mukhtalifin maʿa murūri s-sinīn.
Ramadan falls in a different season as the years pass.
The adjectives agree with تقويم (masculine) or سنة (feminine): تقويم ميلادي but سنة ميلادية; تقويم هجري but سنة هجرية.
صدر القرار في سنة ألف وأربعمئة وثمان وأربعين هجرية.
ṣadara l-qarāru fī sanati ʾalfin wa-ʾarbaʿimiʾatin wa-thamānin wa-ʾarbaʿīna hijriyya(h).
The decision was issued in the Hijri year 1448.
Building a written-out date
A careful prose pattern is:
في + ordinal day + من + month + عام/سنة + cardinal year
The day ordinal agrees with understood masculine يوم, so “the fifteenth” is الخامس عشر, not feminine الخامسة عشرة.
The full inflection of days and years is developed in Dates, Years, and Centuries; here the focus is choosing the calendar and regional month vocabulary.
يبدأ المؤتمر في الخامس عشر من سبتمبر عام ألفين وستة وعشرين.
yabdaʾu l-muʾtamaru fī l-khāmisa ʿashara min sibtambara ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sittatin wa-ʿishrīn.
The conference begins on 15 September 2026.
ينتهي التسجيل في الحادي والعشرين من مارس.
yantahī t-tasjīlu fī l-ḥādī wa-l-ʿishrīna min māris.
Registration ends on the twenty-first of March.
Forms and headings commonly use digits: ١٥ سبتمبر ٢٠٢٦. A day digit is normally understood as an ordinal in context even though it looks cardinal. Slash notation ١٥/٩/٢٠٢٦ is compact, but spelling out the month removes international day/month ambiguity.
اكتب التاريخ هكذا: ١٥ سبتمبر ٢٠٢٦.
uktubi t-tārīkha hakadhā: al-khāmisa ʿashara min sibtambar ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sittatin wa-ʿishrīn.
Write the date like this: 15 September 2026.
Gregorian month names vary regionally
There is no single pan-Arab month-name set. Unicode’s CLDR locale data records country-specific conventions, while official Jordanian material, for example, uses كانون الثاني and أيار. Learn the set used by the document you are reading.
| Month | Widely used international set | Levant and Iraq | Algeria and Tunisia |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | يناير | كانون الثاني | جانفي |
| February | فبراير | شباط | فيفري |
| March | مارس | آذار | مارس |
| April | أبريل | نيسان | أفريل |
| May | مايو | أيار | ماي |
| June | يونيو | حزيران | جوان |
| July | يوليو | تموز | جويلية |
| August | أغسطس | آب | أوت |
| September | سبتمبر | أيلول | سبتمبر |
| October | أكتوبر | تشرين الأول | أكتوبر |
| November | نوفمبر | تشرين الثاني | نوفمبر |
| December | ديسمبر | كانون الأول | ديسمبر |
Moroccan formal usage adds forms such as يوليوز، شتنبر، نونبر، دجنبر (regional: Morocco). A reader may also see a national document place two forms together to help a wider audience. Variation belongs to institutions and countries, not to a hierarchy of “correct” and “incorrect” Arabic.
تبدأ العطلة في الأردن في الخامس والعشرين من أيار.
tabdaʾu l-ʿuṭlatu fī l-ʾurdunni fī l-khāmisi wa-l-ʿishrīna min ʾayyār.
The holiday begins in Jordan on 25 May. (regional month name: Jordan)
تفتح المدرسة في الجزائر في السادس من سبتمبر.
taftaḥu l-madrasatu fī l-jazāʾiri fī s-sādisi min sibtambar.
The school opens in Algeria on 6 September. (the month name happens to match the international set)
The contrast is lexical, not grammatical. الخامس والعشرين من أيار and الخامس والعشرين من مايو use the same ordinal-day structure.
The Hijri months and their iḍāfa forms
The twelve month names are:
| Number | Hijri month | Number | Hijri month |
|---|---|---|---|
| ١ | محرم | ٧ | رجب |
| ٢ | صفر | ٨ | شعبان |
| ٣ | ربيع الأول | ٩ | رمضان |
| ٤ | ربيع الآخر | ١٠ | شوال |
| ٥ | جمادى الأولى | ١١ | ذو القعدة |
| ٦ | جمادى الآخرة | ١٢ | ذو الحجة |
In ذو القعدة and ذو الحجة, ذو is an iḍāfa head. It changes with case: في ذي الحجة after في.
يبدأ البرنامج في العاشر من محرم.
yabdaʾu l-barnāmaju fī l-ʿāshiri min muḥarram.
The program begins on the tenth of Muharram.
تزداد الرحلات في ذي الحجة.
tazdādu r-riḥlātu fī dhī l-ḥijja(h).
Travel increases in Dhu al-Hijjah.
Era notation: م and هـ
م abbreviates ميلادي “Gregorian/CE,” and هـ abbreviates هجري “Hijri/AH.” The letters label the calendar; they are not part of the number.
التاريخ الميلادي: ٤ سبتمبر ٢٠٢٦ م. التاريخ الهجري: ٢٢ ربيع الأول ١٤٤٨ هـ.
at-tārīkhu l-mīlādiyyu: ar-rābiʿu min sibtambara ʿāma ʾalfayni wa-sittatin wa-ʿishrīn mīlādiyyan. at-tārīkhu l-hijriyyu: ath-thānī wa-l-ʿishrūna min rabīʿi l-ʾawwali ʿāma ʾalfin wa-ʾarbaʿimiʾatin wa-thamānin wa-ʾarbaʿīna hijriyyan.
Gregorian date: 4 September 2026 CE. Hijri date: 22 Rabi I 1448 AH. (paired date published in Saudi official records)
The paired date above is attested in the Saudi official-gazette Umm al-Qura archive. Treat it as that institution’s pairing, not as proof that every algorithm labels every sunset-to-sunset interval identically.
Conversion is a method, not simple subtraction
There is no constant number to subtract from a Gregorian year. Software supports several Hijri variants: sighting-based calendars, tabular algorithms, and the Saudi تقويم أم القرى. Unicode’s calendar-variant documentation distinguishes these explicitly. A religious observance may depend on an official sighting announcement, while an administrative database needs a deterministic method.
هذا التاريخ محسوب وفق تقويم أم القرى.
hādhā t-tārīkhu maḥsūbun wafqa taqwīmi ʾummi l-qurā.
This date is calculated according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. (Saudi institutional context)
يعلن موعد العيد بعد اعتماد الجهة المختصة.
yuʿlanu mawʿidu l-ʿīdi baʿda ʿtimādi l-jihati l-mukhtaṣṣa(h).
The festival date is announced after approval by the competent authority.
Interpretation task: read a schedule safely
فتح التسجيل: ١ كانون الثاني ٢٠٢٧ م
إغلاق التسجيل: ١٠ شعبان ١٤٤٨ هـ
ملاحظة: يعتمد التاريخ الهجري المعلن من الجهة المختصة
يفتح التسجيل في أول كانون الثاني، ويغلق في العاشر من شعبان.
yaftaḥu t-tasjīlu fī ʾawwali kānūna th-thānī, wa-yughlaqu fī l-ʿāshiri min shaʿbān.
Registration opens on 1 January and closes on 10 Shaaban. (The schedule labels each calendar separately.)
Do not assume the two lines are equivalent dates. They are two separate milestones. كانون الثاني identifies Levantine/Iraqi Gregorian January; شعبان identifies a Hijri month.
Common Mistakes
Treating one Gregorian month set as universal
❌ كل العرب يسمون يناير بالاسم نفسه.
Incorrect — كانون الثاني، جانفي, and other country-specific forms are standard in their institutions.
✅ يقال يناير في بلدان، وكانون الثاني في الأردن وبلاد الشام والعراق.
yuqālu yanāyir fī buldān, wa-kānūnu th-thānī fī l-ʾurdunni wa-bilādi sh-shāmi wa-l-ʿirāq.
Some countries say yanāyir, while Jordan, the Levant, and Iraq use kānūn al-thānī.
Using a feminine ordinal for an omitted يوم
❌ الموعد في الخامسة عشرة من مايو.
Incorrect for 15 May — the omitted noun يوم is masculine.
✅ الموعد في الخامس عشر من مايو.
al-mawʿidu fī l-khāmisa ʿashara min māyū.
The appointment is on 15 May.
Treating ذو as unchangeable after a preposition
❌ يسافر الحجاج في ذو الحجة.
Incorrect in careful MSA — after في, ذو becomes genitive ذي.
✅ يسافر الحجاج في ذي الحجة.
yusāfiru l-ḥujjāju fī dhī l-ḥijja(h).
Pilgrims travel in Dhu al-Hijjah.
Assuming every converter gives the authoritative day
❌ نتيجة التطبيق هي التاريخ الرسمي في كل بلد.
Incorrect — Hijri algorithms and sighting authorities can differ.
✅ أتحقق من التقويم والجهة المعتمدين في الوثيقة.
ʾataḥaqaqu mina t-taqwīmi wa-l-jihati l-muʿtamadayn fī l-wathīqa(h).
I check the calendar method and authority adopted in the document.
Key Takeaways
- A Gregorian year is solar; a Hijri year is lunar and shifts through the seasons.
- Dates commonly use a masculine ordinal day, month name, and cardinal year.
- Gregorian month vocabulary varies systematically by country; no one set is universally Arabic.
- Label years with م/ميلادي or هـ/هجري whenever confusion is possible.
- A Hijri conversion is tied to an algorithm or authority, so verify the institutional source for important dates.
