Addresses and Geographic Names

An address is not a sentence translated word for word. It is a structured record whose order depends on its purpose: prose can move from country to city to street, a postal block follows the destination operator’s template, and a map pin may use a short digital code. Across Arabic-speaking countries, postcodes, building numbers, districts, and post-office boxes do not have one universal format.

The grammar is more stable than the template. Street and district names are often iḍāfas, place names keep their established article, and Arabic normally puts a generic head such as شارع “street” before the specific name.

Describing a location: broad to narrow

When you explain where a place is, a clear sequence is country → city → district → street → building or unit. Repeat في when it prevents a dense list from becoming ambiguous.

يقع المكتب في الأردن، في عمان، في شارع الملكة رانيا.

yaqaʿu l-maktabu fī l-ʾurdunn, fī ʿammān, fī shāriʿi l-malikati rānyā.

The office is in Jordan, in Amman, on Queen Rania Street.

نسكن في المغرب، في الرباط، في حي أكدال.

naskunu fī l-maghrib, fī r-ribāṭ, fī ḥayyi ʾakdāl.

We live in Morocco, in Rabat, in the Agdal district.

English normally says “Queen Rania Street,” placing the name before Street. Arabic says شارع الملكة رانيا: the geographic type comes first. This is an iḍāfa. شارع is the construct head, so it cannot take الـ or tanwīn; the following definite title and name make the whole street name definite.

المكتبة في شارع جامعة الدول العربية.

al-maktabatu fī shāriʿi jāmiʿati d-duwali l-ʿarabiyya(h).

The library is on Arab League Street.

Long official names can contain a chain: شارع جامعة الدول العربية is “street of the League of Arab States.” Read from the right to identify the proper name, then add the geographic head on the left.

The same construct rules govern institutions such as جامعة القاهرة; see Names, Titles, and Institutional Iḍāfas.

💡
For a named feature, start with the category: شارع الملك، ميدان التحرير، جامعة القاهرة، مطار دبي. English often reverses these elements.

A postal block follows the destination country

Postal addresses usually move from the recipient and delivery point outward to locality and country. The destination country goes last on international mail, even though a prose explanation may begin with the country. The Universal Postal Union recommends following the destination country’s own format and adding the destination country clearly for international routing.

Saudi Arabia: National Address components

Saudi Post’s National Address specifies building number, street, district, city, five-digit postcode, and a four-digit secondary number (الرقم الفرعي); it also offers a separate short-address code. A practical Arabic block can therefore look like this:

ريم خالد، مبنى ٢٩٢٩، شارع ريحانة بنت زيد، حي العارض، الرياض ١٣٣٣٧، الرقم الفرعي ٨١١٨، المملكة العربية السعودية.

rīmu khālid, mabnā ithnān tisʿa ithnān tisʿa, shāriʿu rayḥānata binti zayd, ḥayyu l-ʿāriḍ, ar-riyāḍu wāḥid thalātha thalātha thalātha sabʿa, ar-raqamu l-farʿiyyu thamāniya wāḥid wāḥid thamāniya, al-mamlakatu l-ʿarabiyyatu s-suʿūdiyya(h).

Reem Khalid, Building 2929, Rayhanah Bint Zaid Street, al-Arid District, Riyadh 13337, Secondary Number 8118, Saudi Arabia. (Saudi National Address-style sample)

The displayed digits are natural for a label. The romanization gives the common safety-first choice of reading these identifiers digit by digit; a speaker may instead read the whole number when the context is clear.

United Arab Emirates: post-office-box and physical fields

Emirates Post’s current address guidance asks for title and name, P.O. Box, physical address, emirate, and telephone number. That differs from the Saudi National Address; neither template should be projected onto every Arab country.

السيد عمر حسين، صندوق بريد ١١١، مبنى النور، شارع المطار، أبوظبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة.

as-sayyidu ʿumaru ḥusayn, ṣundūqu barīdin wāḥid wāḥid wāḥid, mabnā n-nūr, shāriʿu l-maṭār, ʾabūẓabī, al-ʾimārātu l-ʿarabiyyatu l-muttaḥida(h).

Mr Omar Hussein, P.O. Box 111, al-Nur Building, Airport Road, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (UAE-style sample)

The abbreviation ص.ب. stands for صندوق بريد “P.O. Box.” In speech, read the full phrase. Other shortenings—such as ش. for شارع—are not equally transparent across systems, so write the full word when space permits.

Place names keep their own articles

Some place names lexically contain الـ: القاهرة، الرياض، الجزائر، المغرب، السودان، اليمن. Others do not: مصر، لبنان، عمان، دبي، تونس. This is vocabulary, not a rule based on size or country status.

سافرت من القاهرة إلى دبي ثم إلى مسقط.

sāfartu mina l-qāhirati ʾilā dubayy thumma ʾilā masqaṭ.

I traveled from Cairo to Dubai and then to Muscat.

أرسل الطرد إلى الجزائر العاصمة، لا إلى مدينة أخرى.

ʾarsili ṭ-ṭarda ʾilā l-jazāʾiri l-ʿāṣima(h), lā ʾilā madīnatin ʾukhrā.

Send the parcel to Algiers, the capital, not to another city.

الجزائر can name Algeria and, with context or العاصمة, Algiers. A logistics form should not rely on context: use separate city and country fields.

Adjectives inside fixed names still agree normally: المملكة العربية السعودية and الإمارات العربية المتحدة have definite adjectives matching their nouns. Do not drop one article as English drops repeated the.

💡
Learn a geographic name with its article. Say في الرياض but في دبي; adding or deleting الـ changes the recorded name.

Latin spellings are operational data

The same Arabic place may have competing English or French spellings: Makkah/Mecca, Jeddah/Jiddah, Tangier/Tanger, Agadir. The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names maintains a scientific Arabic romanization standard, but public authorities, postal operators, airports, and residents may use established conventional forms.

For delivery, copy the destination authority’s or recipient’s spelling. For linguistic analysis, this guide can write مكة as makka(h). Those are different tasks. Never “correct” an official address solely to match learner romanization.

اكتب اسم المدينة بالصيغة المسجلة في العنوان.

uktubi sma l-madīnati bi-ṣ-ṣīghati l-musajjalati fī l-ʿunwān.

Write the city name in the form recorded in the address.

Interpretation task: which line does what?

Read this block:

ليلى منصور
شقة ١٢، مبنى ٧، شارع الجامعة
حي الشميساني، عمان ١١١٩٤
الأردن

العنوان في الأردن، والمدينة عمان، والشارع شارع الجامعة، ورقم الشقة ١٢.

al-ʿunwānu fī l-ʾurdunn, wa-l-madīnatu ʿammān, wa-sh-shāriʿu shāriʿu l-jāmiʿa(h), wa-raqamu sh-shaqqati ithnā ʿashar.

The address is in Jordan; the city is Amman, the street is University Street, and the apartment number is 12.

Notice that the mailing block narrows around the delivery point before ending with city and country, while the explanatory sentence starts broad. Order answers function.

Common Mistakes

Copying English name-first street order

❌ الملكة رانيا شارع

Incorrect for the street name — Arabic puts the geographic head شارع first.

✅ شارع الملكة رانيا

shāriʿu l-malikati rānyā

Queen Rania Street.

Adding an article to an iḍāfa head

❌ الشارع الجامعة

Incorrect — in the iḍāfa شارع الجامعة, the first term cannot take الـ.

✅ يقع المبنى في شارع الجامعة.

yaqaʿu l-mabnā fī shāriʿi l-jāmiʿa(h).

The building is on University Street.

Removing or inventing a place-name article

❌ سافرت إلى رياض ثم إلى الدبي.

Incorrect — the established names are الرياض with the article and دبي without it.

✅ سافرت إلى الرياض ثم إلى دبي.

sāfartu ʾilā r-riyāḍi thumma ʾilā dubayy.

I traveled to Riyadh and then to Dubai.

Treating one national template as pan-Arab

❌ كل عنوان عربي يحتاج إلى رقم فرعي وصندوق بريد.

Incorrect — secondary numbers and P.O. boxes belong to particular systems, not every Arabic address.

✅ أتبع نموذج البريد في دولة الوجهة.

ʾattabiʿu namūdhaja l-barīdi fī dawlati l-wijha(h).

I follow the postal template of the destination country.

Trusting a guessed Latin spelling

❌ أغير تهجئة المدينة الإنجليزية من عندي.

Incorrect — an improvised spelling can break matching or routing.

✅ أنقل تهجئة المدينة من المصدر الرسمي.

ʾanqulu tahjiʾata l-madīnati mina l-maṣdari r-rasmiyy.

I copy the city spelling from the official source.

Key Takeaways

  • Prose may move country → city → street; a postal block follows the destination operator’s order.
  • Geographic heads normally precede names: شارع الملك، حي النخيل، مطار دبي.
  • Preserve lexical articles in names such as الرياض, and do not add one to دبي.
  • ص.ب. means صندوق بريد, but address components and abbreviations—including Saudi Arabia’s الرقم الفرعي—vary by country.
  • Treat official Arabic and Latin place-name forms as operational data, not as guesses from one universal transliteration.
