Education gives Modern Standard Arabic one of its broadest shared domains, but “school is in Arabic” is not a complete policy description. A student may study Arabic literacy in MSA, hear a regional variety in classroom interaction, learn science through English or French, and attend a private or minority-language program governed by different rules. Country, school sector, grade, and subject all matter.
To discuss this accurately, separate four questions: What language is taught as a subject? What language is prescribed for instruction? What language does the teacher actually use to explain? What language appears in textbooks and examinations?
English often uses the single label Arabic where an Arabic policy document distinguishes العربية الفصحى, a local لهجة, and another لغة تدريس. An English translation that collapses those categories can conceal the very policy choice under discussion.
MSA is the core code of Arabic literacy
Arabic literacy normally develops through اللغة العربية الفصحى or simply العربية: learners connect the shared written system with standard vocabulary, morphology, and syntax. Reading and writing therefore expose pupils to forms that may not be the default code of home conversation.
يتعلم التلاميذ القراءة والكتابة باللغة العربية الفصحى.
yataʿallamu t-talāmīdhu l-qirāʾata wa-l-kitābata bi-l-lughati l-ʿarabiyyati l-fuṣḥā.
Pupils learn reading and writing in Modern Standard Arabic.
تشرح المعلمة الفرق بين لغة النص ولغة الحديث اليومي.
tashraḥu l-muʿallimatu l-farqa bayna lughati n-naṣṣi wa-lughati l-ḥadīthi l-yawmiyy.
The teacher explains the difference between the language of the text and everyday speech.
This is not the same as teaching children a wholly foreign language. MSA and regional varieties share substantial lexicon and structure, but they also differ in pronunciation, morphology, vocabulary, and syntax. Learners must build correspondences rather than merely replace “wrong speech” with “correct speech.”
For a feature-by-feature map of this relationship, see MSA, Classical Arabic, and the Dialects.
Policy, materials, and classroom talk are different layers
لغة التدريس means “medium/language of instruction.” لغة المقرر can mean the language prescribed for a course or curriculum. لغة الشرح identifies the code used in explanation, which may shift during a lesson. A policy document can prescribe MSA while a teacher uses local speech to check understanding, manage the class, or restate a difficult point.
لغة تدريس مادة التاريخ هي العربية، لكن المعلم يوضح بعض النقاط باللهجة المحلية.
lughatu tadrīsi māddati t-tārīkhi hiya l-ʿarabiyya(h), lākinna l-muʿallima yuwaḍḍiḥu baʿḍa n-niqāṭi bi-l-lahjati l-maḥalliyya(h).
The medium of history instruction is Arabic, but the teacher explains some points in the local dialect.
يكتب الطلاب الإجابة بالفصحى في الامتحان.
yaktubu ṭ-ṭullābu l-ʾijābata bi-l-fuṣḥā fī l-imtiḥān.
Students write the answer in MSA in the examination.
The first sentence describes a possible practice, not every classroom. Teachers differ, and a bilingual school may use two instructional languages systematically rather than switching informally.
Essential policy vocabulary
| Arabic term | Meaning | Register or caution |
|---|---|---|
| لغة التدريس | medium of instruction | formal/administrative |
| اللغة الأم | mother tongue / first home language | not always a single language |
| لغة ثانية | second language | depends on learner context |
| لغة أجنبية | foreign language | a policy category, not a judgment of value |
| التعليم الثنائي اللغة | bilingual education | two languages used in an organized program |
| التعدد اللغوي | multilingualism | academic/policy |
| التعريب | Arabization | can concern terminology, administration, or instructional language |
| التناوب اللغوي | language alternation | formal; especially important in Moroccan policy terminology |
These are iḍāfa structures. In لغة التدريس, the first noun لغة has no article; definiteness comes from التدريس. In حصة اللغة العربية, “Arabic-language period,” both اللغة and its adjective العربية are definite inside the longer chain.
خصص الجدول خمس حصص للغة العربية وثلاث حصص للغة الإنجليزية.
khaṣṣaṣa l-jadwalu khamsa ḥiṣaṣin li-l-lughati l-ʿarabiyyati wa-thalātha ḥiṣaṣin li-l-lughati l-ʾingilīziyya(h).
The timetable allocated five periods to Arabic and three to English.
تراجع اللجنة مصطلحات كتاب العلوم قبل طباعته.
turājiʿu l-lajnatu muṣṭalaḥāti kitābi l-ʿulūmi qabla ṭibāʿatih.
The committee reviews the terminology in the science textbook before it is printed.
مصطلح، منهج، مقرر، كتاب مدرسي، امتحان are not interchangeable. A منهج is a curriculum or educational approach; a مقرر is a prescribed course or syllabus; a كتاب مدرسي is a textbook.
Country contrast: the United Arab Emirates
The UAE government’s current curriculum and instruction page says government schools follow the national curriculum, with Arabic as a basic language of instruction and English used widely for scientific and technical subjects. It also describes multiple international curricula in private schools, alongside required core subjects such as Arabic and social studies. This is a sector-sensitive policy, not the claim “all UAE schooling is bilingual in exactly the same way.”
في المدارس الحكومية الإماراتية تدرس مواد علمية أو تقنية بالإنجليزية إلى جانب العربية.
fī l-madārisi l-ḥukūmiyyati l-ʾimārātiyyati tudarrasu mawāddu ʿilmiyyatun ʾaw tiqniyyatun bi-l-ʾingilīziyyati ʾilā jānibi l-ʿarabiyya(h).
In UAE government schools, scientific or technical subjects are taught in English alongside Arabic. (country-labeled policy summary)
The passive تدرس foregrounds the subjects. The prepositional phrase بالإنجليزية identifies medium, not the nationality of a textbook or teacher.
Country contrast: Morocco
Morocco’s Framework Law 51.17 treats Arabic as the principal language of instruction, provides for developing Amazigh in education, promotes balanced multilingualism, and defines a principle of التناوب اللغوي for teaching some content—especially scientific and technical content—through foreign languages. Implementation varies by level and program, so the law’s architecture should not be reduced to “Morocco teaches in French.”
تعتمد السياسة المغربية العربية لغة رئيسة للتدريس، وتعمل على تطوير الأمازيغية والتعدد اللغوي.
taʿtamidu s-siyāsatu l-maghribiyyatu l-ʿarabiyyata lughatan raʾīsatan li-t-tadrīs, wa-taʿmalu ʿalā taṭwīri l-ʾamāzīghiyyati wa-t-taʿaddudi l-lughawiyy.
Moroccan policy adopts Arabic as a principal language of instruction and works to develop Amazigh and multilingualism. (country-labeled policy summary)
يقصد بالتناوب اللغوي تدريس بعض المضامين بلغة أخرى ضمن خطة تعليمية.
yuqṣadu bi-t-tanāwubi l-lughawiyyi tadrīsu baʿḍi l-maḍāmīni bi-lughatin ʾukhrā ḍimna khuṭṭatin taʿlīmiyya(h).
Language alternation means teaching some content through another language within an educational plan. (formal policy term)
The two country examples illustrate why لغة التدريس needs a subject, level, and sector. “Arabic is official” does not tell you the language of Grade 10 physics, a private primary school, or a university engineering program.
Terminology, borrowing, and comprehension
Scientific and technical teaching creates terminology choices. An Arabic textbook may use an established Arabic term, a translated neologism, or an international symbol; a bilingual lecturer may supply an English or French equivalent. That does not mean Arabic lacks the concept, nor does the existence of an academy-approved term guarantee immediate classroom familiarity.
كتب الأستاذ مصطلح الخلية، ثم أضاف مقابله الإنجليزي بين قوسين.
kataba l-ʾustādhu muṣṭalaḥa l-khaliyya(h), thumma ʾaḍāfa muqābilahu l-ʾingilīziyya bayna qawsayn.
The teacher wrote the term al-khaliyya ‘cell,’ then added its English equivalent in parentheses.
In مقابله الإنجليزي, الإنجليزي agrees with masculine مقابل, not feminine الخلية. Dense educational phrases reward careful attachment.
A practical timetable
yadrusu ṭ-ṭullābu t-tārīkha bi-l-ʿarabiyyati wa-r-riyāḍiyyāti bi-l-ʾingilīziyyati fī hādhā l-barnāmaj.
Students study history in Arabic and mathematics in English in this program.
Interpretation task
The timetable distinguishes المادة “subject,” لغة الكتاب “textbook language,” and لغة التدريس المعلنة “declared medium.” It does not reveal whether the teacher occasionally clarifies a point in another code. To learn that, you need classroom observation or a separate question—not a guess from national identity.
Common Mistakes
Calling every classroom use of dialect an error
❌ استخدام اللهجة في الشرح يعني أن الدرس غير عربي.
Incorrect — a teacher may use local speech strategically while the text, curriculum, and assessment remain in MSA.
✅ قد يجمع الشرح بين الفصحى واللهجة بحسب هدف الدرس.
qad yajmaʿu sh-sharḥu bayna l-fuṣḥā wa-l-lahjati bi-ḥasabi hadafi d-dars.
The explanation may combine MSA and dialect depending on the lesson’s purpose.
Equating official language with every medium of instruction
❌ ما دامت العربية رسمية، فكل مادة في كل مدرسة تدرس بالعربية.
Incorrect — medium varies by sector, level, subject, and country policy.
✅ أسأل عن لغة تدريس المادة في المدرسة والصف المحددين.
ʾasʾalu ʿan lughati tadrīsi l-māddati fī l-madrasati wa-ṣ-ṣaffi l-muḥaddadayn.
I ask about the medium of that subject in the specified school and grade.
Putting the article on an iḍāfa head
❌ اللغة التدريس في هذا البرنامج هي الإنجليزية.
Incorrect — لغة is the construct head in لغة التدريس and cannot take الـ.
✅ لغة التدريس في هذا البرنامج هي الإنجليزية.
lughatu t-tadrīsi fī hādhā l-barnāmaji hiya l-ʾingilīziyya(h).
The medium of instruction in this program is English.
Generalizing one country’s terminology
❌ التناوب اللغوي هو اسم كل تعليم ثنائي اللغة في العالم العربي.
Incorrect — it is a specific policy term whose scope must be read in its institutional context.
✅ أقرأ تعريف المصطلح في وثيقة السياسة التعليمية.
ʾaqraʾu taʿrīfa l-muṣṭalaḥi fī wathīqati s-siyāsati t-taʿlīmiyya(h).
I read the term’s definition in the education-policy document.
Key Takeaways
- MSA anchors shared Arabic literacy, while classroom interaction may include regional speech or other languages.
- Distinguish language as subject, medium of instruction, textbook language, examination language, and actual explanatory talk.
- Educational terminology forms precise iḍāfas: لغة التدريس، كتاب العلوم، حصة العربية.
- UAE and Moroccan policies illustrate different multilingual architectures; neither represents every Arab country or every school sector.
- Report country, sector, level, subject, and policy date before making a claim about “the language of education.”
