Exception with غير، سوى، عدا، خلا، and حاشا

English except looks like one item, but Arabic distributes exception meaning across several grammatical categories. إلا is a particle. غير and سوى are nouns whose own case changes while the excluded term after them is genitive. عدا، خلا، حاشا have inherited verb-like or preposition-like analyses that can change the following noun's case.

The practical consequence is simple but far-reaching: do not assign case from the English translation. First decide what kind of Arabic marker you have, then identify whether the sentence is complete and positive, complete and negative, or “emptied” (مفرغ) without an explicit general set. Category and sentence structure jointly determine the form.

غير and سوى are nouns in an iḍāfa

غير “other than” and سوى “apart from” head an iḍāfa. The excluded expression is their genitive complement. The marker itself occupies the syntactic position that an excepted item with إلا would occupy.

شارك جميع الأعضاء إلا عضوا واحدا في التصويت.

shāraka jamīʿu l-ʾaʿḍāʾi ʾillā ʿuḍwan wāḥidan fī t-taṣwīt.

All the members except one took part in the vote.

شارك جميع الأعضاء غير عضو واحد في التصويت.

shāraka jamīʿu l-ʾaʿḍāʾi ghayra ʿuḍwin wāḥidin fī t-taṣwīt.

All the members other than one took part in the vote. (Formal.)

شارك جميع الأعضاء سوى عضو واحد في التصويت.

shāraka jamīʿu l-ʾaʿḍāʾi siwā ʿuḍwin wāḥidin fī t-taṣwīt.

All the members apart from one took part in the vote. (Formal.)

These complete positive sentences name the general set جميع الأعضاء. With إلا, عضوًا is accusative. With غير, the marker itself is accusative غيرَ, while عضوٍ is genitive after it. سوى has the same syntactic accusative, but its final alif maqṣūra prevents the short case vowel from surfacing: the case is estimated.

💡
Bracket غير عضوٍ and سوى عضوٍ as iḍāfa phrases. The marker receives case from the exception construction; the excluded noun receives genitive from the marker.

Complete positive, complete negative, and emptied patterns

The case of غير/سوى parallels the main structural choices available after إلا.

Complete positive: the marker is obligatorily accusative

When the sentence states a positive event and explicitly names the general set, غير or سوى is accusative.

اعتمدت اللجنة كل التوصيات غير التوصية الأخيرة.

iʿtamadati l-lajnatu kulla t-tawṣiyāti ghayra t-tawṣiyati l-ʾakhīra(h).

The committee adopted all the recommendations except the last one. (Formal.)

غيرَ is the accusative exception marker. Definite التوصيةِ is genitive as its iḍāfa complement, and adjective الأخيرةِ agrees with that complement, not with غير.

Complete negative: accusative or case matching

In a complete negative construction, formal grammar permits two analyses. The marker can remain an accusative exception, or it can follow the explicit general set as a case-matching dependent traditionally analyzed as substitution. The choice is visible with غير when the matched case is nominative or genitive.

ما حضر المشاركون غير خالد إلى الجلسة الصباحية.

mā ḥaḍara l-mushārikūna ghayru Khālidin ʾilā l-jalsati ṣ-ṣabāḥiyya(h).

None of the participants except Khalid attended the morning session. (غيرُ matches the nominative set.)

An accusative reading غيرَ خالدٍ is also licensed in the same syntactic environment. Because ordinary unvocalized prose hides the contrast, writers should not force a reader to recover a subtle analysis when a simpler إلا خالد or باستثناء خالد would be clearer.

ما تحدثت مع الموظفين غير خالد بشأن الشكوى.

mā taḥaddathtu maʿa l-muwaẓẓafīna ghayri Khālidin bi-shaʾni sh-shakwā.

I spoke with none of the employees except Khalid about the complaint. (غيرِ matches the genitive set.)

Here غيرِ follows genitive الموظفين. Accusative غيرَ would instead represent the exception analysis. Both are part of formal MSA; editorial clarity may favor rephrasing.

Emptied negation: the marker takes the open sentence role

In an مفرغ construction there is no explicit general set. Remove the exception phrase and the sentence has an open syntactic slot. غير or سوى fills that slot and receives its case from it.

ما حضر غير خالد بعد الاستراحة.

mā ḥaḍara ghayru Khālidin baʿda l-istirāḥa(h).

No one other than Khalid attended after the break. (غيرُ is the nominative subject.)

لم أراجع غير فصل واحد من التقرير.

lam ʾurājiʿ ghayra faṣlin wāḥidin mina t-taqrīr.

I reviewed only one chapter of the report. (غيرَ is the accusative object.)

ما شارك سوى فريق واحد في المرحلة النهائية.

mā shāraka siwā farīqin wāḥidin fī l-marḥalati n-nihāʾiyya(h).

Only one team took part in the final stage. (سوى has estimated nominative case.)

In the last sentence, سوى is the subject and therefore nominative, but its ending looks and sounds the same as accusative or genitive سوى. This is estimated case on a noun ending in fixed ى, not an absence of case.

عدا and خلا: two licensed analyses

Without preceding ما, عدا and خلا have two traditional analyses in exception use:

  • as past-tense verbs whose understood subject refers to the exception operation; the following noun is an accusative object;
  • as prepositions; the following noun is genitive.

Both patterns are licensed in fully inflected formal Arabic.

وصل المدعوون عدا ضيفا واحدا قبل الظهر.

waṣala l-madʿuwwūna ʿadā ḍayfan wāḥidan qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.

The invitees arrived except for one guest before noon. (عدا analyzed as a verb; accusative object.)

وصل المدعوون عدا ضيف واحد بعد إغلاق التسجيل.

waṣala l-madʿuwwūna ʿadā ḍayfin wāḥidin baʿda ʾighlāqi t-tasjīl.

The invitees arrived except for one guest after registration closed. (عدا analyzed as a preposition; genitive complement.)

Ordinary unvocalized spelling again conceals the distinction. The syntax is not “free case after except”; it is a choice between two analyses with different government.

When ما precedes عدا or خلا, the construction is analyzed verbally, and the following noun is accusative. In practical contemporary terms, memorize ما عدا + accusative and ما خلا + accusative.

أرسلت الإدارة الملفات كلها ما عدا الملحق المالي.

ʾarsalati l-ʾidāratu l-malaffāti kullahā mā ʿadā l-mulḥaqa l-māliyy.

The administration sent all the files except the financial appendix. (Formal.)

حضر ممثلو الأقسام ما خلا ممثل القسم القانوني.

ḥaḍara mumaththilū l-ʾaqsāmi mā khalā mumaththila l-qismi l-qānūniyy.

The department representatives attended except the representative of the legal department. (Formal.)

These forms occur in formal writing, but إلا and باستثناء are often more transparent. Do not vary the case merely for style without maintaining the underlying analysis.

حاشا is elevated and lexically restricted

Exception حاشا is markedly elevated in contemporary prose. The prepositional analysis with a genitive complement is well established; a verbal analysis with an accusative is also transmitted in the grammatical tradition, with differences among schools and usage descriptions. This is a genuine area where the tidy classroom inventory overstates modern interchangeability.

اكتملت المراجعات حاشا تقرير المدقق الخارجي.

iktamalati l-murājaʿātu ḥāshā taqrīri l-mudaqqiqi l-khārijiyy.

The reviews were completed, except for the external auditor's report. (Elevated formal; حاشا treated as a preposition.)

In neutral administrative prose, write:

اكتملت المراجعات باستثناء تقرير المدقق الخارجي.

iktamalati l-murājaʿātu bi-stithnāʾi taqrīri l-mudaqqiqi l-khārijiyy.

The reviews were completed except for the external auditor's report. (Neutral contemporary formal prose.)

The fixed expression حاشا لله “far be it from God / God forbid” has its own formulaic use and should not be treated as evidence that حاشا is the everyday default exception marker.

💡
A traditional list can make عدا، خلا، حاشا look equivalent to neutral إلا. They are not equal in present-day frequency or stylistic weight. Recognize the inherited alternatives, but choose the clearest current form when writing.

Nominal exception is not a condition

إلا إذا means “unless / except if” and introduces a condition. It cannot be replaced mechanically with nominal غير or سوى, whose following noun is an iḍāfa complement.

سننشر النتائج غدا إلا إذا طلبت اللجنة تأجيلها.

sa-nanshuru n-natāʾija ghadan ʾillā ʾidhā ṭalabati l-lajnatu taʾjīlahā.

We will publish the results tomorrow unless the committee asks to postpone them.

This is a conditional exception to an event, not the removal of a noun from a stated set. See unless and negative conditions for the conditional system.

Common Mistakes

Treating غير as an invariant particle

❌ ما وصل غير خالد إلى المقر.

mā waṣala ghayra Khālidin

Incorrect reading in the emptied construction — غير is the subject and must be nominative: ghayru.

✅ ما حضر غير خالد إلى الاجتماع المسائي.

mā ḥaḍara ghayru Khālidin ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi l-masāʾiyy.

No one other than Khalid attended the evening meeting.

Leaving the complement of غير outside the iḍāfa

❌ اعتمدنا المقترحات غير من المقترح الأخير.

Incorrect — غير directly heads an iḍāfa; do not insert من before its excluded noun.

✅ اعتمدنا المقترحات غير المقترح الأخير.

iʿtamadnā l-muqtaraḥāti ghayra l-muqtaraḥi l-ʾakhīr.

We adopted the proposals except the last proposal.

Assigning one fixed case after عدا

❌ وصل الضيوف عدا سامر.

waṣala ḍ-ḍuyūfu ʿadā Sāmirun

Incorrect — nominative is licensed by neither analysis: use accusative after verbal عدا or genitive after prepositional عدا.

✅ وصل الضيوف عدا سامرا قبل بدء الحفل.

waṣala ḍ-ḍuyūfu ʿadā Sāmiran qabla badʾi l-ḥafl.

The guests arrived except Samer before the ceremony began. (Verbal analysis, accusative.)

Replacing conditional إلا إذا with nominal غير

❌ سنبدأ غدا غير إذا تغير الموعد.

Incorrect — this is a condition, not a noun excluded from a set.

✅ سنبدأ غدا إلا إذا تغير الموعد الرسمي.

sa-nabdaʾu ghadan ʾillā ʾidhā taghayyara l-mawʿidu r-rasmiyy.

We will begin tomorrow unless the official date changes.

Copying English “except” without choosing a frame

❌ لم يصل أحد باستثناء من خالد.

Incorrect — باستثناء heads an iḍāfa and takes خالد directly; English ‘except for’ does not supply Arabic من.

✅ لم يصل أحد باستثناء خالد حتى الآن.

lam yaṣil ʾaḥadun bi-stithnāʾi Khālidin ḥattā l-ʾān.

No one except Khalid has arrived so far.

Key Takeaways

  • غير and سوى are declinable nouns; the excluded term after them is always genitive in an iḍāfa.
  • Complete positive exception makes the marker accusative; complete negative exception allows accusative or case matching; an emptied construction assigns the open sentence role.
  • سوى has estimated case on final ى, so syntax—not its unchanged surface—identifies the case.
  • عدا and خلا may govern accusative as verbs or genitive as prepositions; after ما عدا/ما خلا, use accusative.
  • Exception حاشا is elevated and less productive, while إلا or باستثناء is usually clearer in contemporary prose.
