ظنّ and Object–Predicate Verbs

In ظننت المشروع ناجحًا “I thought the project successful,” المشروعَ and ناجحًا are not two unrelated things being acted on. Together they express a smaller predication: “the project is successful.” A selected verb of belief or judgment embeds that relation compactly and assigns accusative case to both its entity and its predicate.

Traditional grammar groups several verbs under ظنّ وأخواتها, but the label is not a license to exchange them freely. ظنّ، حسب، عدّ، رأى، وجد، جعل differ in meaning, frequency, register, and alternate complement frames. Contemporary production must begin with the lexical sense of the actual verb, then choose the double-accusative frame only when it expresses “consider/find/make X to be Y.”

From a nominal sentence to two accusatives

The underlying relation is easiest to see by starting with a nominal sentence. Its subject and predicate are nominative. After ظنّ in the belief sense, both become complements of the verb and both are accusative.

الخطة قابلة للتنفيذ.

al-khuṭṭatu qābilatun li-t-tanfīdh.

The plan is feasible. (Independent nominal sentence: nominative subject and predicate.)

ظنت اللجنة الخطة قابلة للتنفيذ.

ẓannati l-lajnatu l-khuṭṭata qābilatan li-t-tanfīdh.

The committee thought the plan feasible. (Two accusatives.)

The pieces are الخطةَ, the first object and logical subject of the embedded relation, and قابلةً, the second object or object predicate. Feminine قابلة agrees with الخطة because it predicates a property of it. Accusative case shows that the whole relation has been absorbed under ظنّت.

The second complement need not be an adjective. It can be a noun phrase, prepositional expression, or another predicate type, provided it can naturally say something about the first object.

عد المجلس الاتفاق خطوة مهمة نحو الإصلاح.

ʿadda l-majlisu l-ittifāqa khuṭwatan muhimmatan naḥwa l-ʾiṣlāḥ.

The council regarded the agreement as an important step toward reform. (Formal.)

The recoverable proposition is الاتفاق خطوة مهمة. This “X is Y” test distinguishes object–predicate syntax from an ordinary transfer verb.

💡
Reconstruct a nominal sentence from the two complements. If X is Y expresses the intended relation, a double-accusative analysis is plausible. If X receives, owns, or is given Y, the complements are participants in a transfer instead.

What the main verbs actually mean

The following tendencies are useful for contemporary MSA:

Verb in this frameTypical contributionRegister or limit
ظَنَّthink, believe, suppose X to be Yproductive in formal MSA; often alternates with أنّ
حَسِبَsuppose, reckon X to be Yformal; do not confuse with حَسَبَ “calculate”
عَدَّregard, count, classify X as Ycommon in formal analytical prose
رَأَىdeem, consider X to be Yformal judgment sense, not automatically physical “see”
وَجَدَfind/discover X to be Yresult of assessment; overlaps in form with a circumstantial reading
جَعَلَmake, render, turn X into Ycausative change, not merely belief

حسبنا الطريق أقصر مما ظهر على الخريطة.

ḥasibnā ṭ-ṭarīqa ʾaqṣara mimmā ẓahara ʿalā l-kharīṭa(h).

We supposed the route to be shorter than it appeared on the map. (Formal.)

رأت الهيئة الإجراء ضروريا لحماية البيانات.

raʾati l-hayʾatu l-ʾijrāʾa ḍarūriyyan li-ḥimāyati l-bayānāt.

The authority deemed the measure necessary to protect the data. (Formal.)

Physical رأى does not automatically belong to this judgment frame. In رأيت الأطفال يركضون, an indicative scene follows direct perception. Similarly, وجد meaning “locate” can take one ordinary object: وجدت المفاتيح “I found the keys.” Only the “found X to be Y” sense supplies object–predicate syntax.

وجد المراجعون الأرقام متسقة مع السجلات الأصلية.

wajada l-murājiʿūna l-ʾarqāma muttasiqatan maʿa s-sijillāti l-ʾaṣliyya(h).

The reviewers found the figures consistent with the original records. (Formal analytical prose.)

Because الأرقام is a nonhuman plural, predicate adjective متسقةً is feminine singular. Case and agreement answer different questions: accusative comes from the frame, while feminine singular comes from the controller.

جعل expresses a caused result

With جعل, the first object undergoes a change and the second complement names the resulting state, role, or classification. Belief verbs assess a relation; جعل brings one about.

جعلت الأمطار الغزيرة الطريق زلقا عند المنعطف.

jaʿalati l-ʾamṭāru l-ghazīratu ṭ-ṭarīqa zaliqan ʿinda l-munʿaṭaf.

The heavy rain made the road slippery at the bend.

جعل القرار التدريب شرطا لتجديد الترخيص.

jaʿala l-qarāru t-tadrība sharṭan li-tajdīdi t-tarkhīṣ.

The decision made training a condition for renewing the license. (Formal.)

Underlying التدريب شرط becomes accusative التدريبَ شرطًا. This is not the inchoative جعل + imperfect sometimes used in inherited narrative to mean “began to.” The complement type and context select the lexical construction.

A pronoun can realize the first object

When the entity is already known, an object suffix can replace the first accusative. The overt predicate remains accusative and still says something about that suffix's referent.

راجعت المقترح مرة أخرى، لكنني ما زلت أظنه مكلفا.

rājaʿtu l-muqtaraḥa marratan ʾukhrā, lākinnanī mā ziltu ʾaẓunnuhu mukallifan.

I reviewed the proposal again, but I still think it costly.

Attached ـه is the first object, referring back to masculine المقترح. مكلفًا is the second complement. If both complements are pronominal or reference could be confused, contemporary prose should expand the sentence rather than stacking opaque suffixes; the two-object clitic page develops that issue.

The أنّ paraphrase changes the internal case

Many belief and judgment verbs can instead take a full proposition with أنّ. The meaning can be close, but the syntax changes. أنّ governs its noun in the accusative, while its predicate returns to nominative.

ظننت المشروع ناجحا رغم التأخير.

ẓanantu l-mashrūʿa nājiḥan raghma t-taʾkhīr.

I thought the project successful despite the delay. (Compact double accusative.)

ظننت أن المشروع ناجح رغم التأخير.

ẓanantu ʾanna l-mashrūʿa nājiḥun raghma t-taʾkhīr.

I thought that the project was successful despite the delay. (أنّ proposition.)

The compact frame foregrounds the assessment ناجحًا directly. The أنّ clause packages a fuller proposition and is often clearer with a long predicate, negation, tense, or several internal dependents.

Light أنْ introduces a verbal event and is different again: رأى المجلس أن يؤجل التصويت means “the council saw fit to postpone the vote.” It does not contain the two nominal accusatives taught here.

💡
Do not memorize “two words after ظنّ are accusative.” Identify one embedded relation. In ظننت أنّ الطريقَ مفتوحٌ, only الطريق is accusative under أنّ; مفتوح is its nominative predicate.

Transfer verbs have two participants, not a predicate

أعطى can also govern two accusative nouns, but they encode a recipient and a transferred theme. They do not form “X is Y.”

أعطت المؤسسة الباحث منحة سنوية.

ʾaʿṭati l-muʾassasatu l-bāḥitha minḥatan sanawiyya(h).

The institution gave the researcher an annual grant. (Recipient plus transferred theme.)

الباحث منحة cannot mean “the researcher is a grant.” Therefore منحةً is not an object predicate. Surface accusative case is shared, but semantic structure and verb valency distinguish the patterns.

Passive alternatives expose the relation

In the passive, the first object can be promoted to nominative passive subject while the object predicate remains accusative. This is especially common with عُدَّ “was regarded” in formal prose.

عد الاقتراح سابقة قانونية في ذلك الوقت.

ʿudda l-iqtirāḥu sābiqatan qānūniyyatan fī dhālika l-waqt.

The proposal was regarded as a legal precedent at that time. (Formal passive.)

The target is unvocalized and therefore does not display active عَدَّ versus passive عُدَّ. The fully vocalized spoken form supplies the passive reading. الاقتراحُ is nominative نائب فاعل; سابقةً remains the accusative predicate about it. A writer can also use the transparent active عدّ الخبراء الاقتراحَ سابقةً قانونيةً when naming the evaluators matters.

Common Mistakes

Copying an English clause directly after the verb

❌ ظننت كان المشروع ناجحا.

Incorrect calque — a bare كان clause cannot serve here as an English-style ‘that’ complement. Use two accusatives directly, or introduce a full أنّ clause containing كان.

✅ ظننت المشروع ناجحا في مرحلته الأولى.

ẓanantu l-mashrūʿa nājiḥan fī marḥalatihi l-ʾūlā.

I thought the project successful in its first phase.

Leaving the second complement nominative

❌ حسبت المهمة سهلة.

ḥasibtu l-muhimmata sahlatun

Incorrect reading — in the compact frame, predicate سهلة is the second accusative: sahlatan.

✅ حسبت المهمة سهلة قبل أن أقرأ الشروط.

ḥasibtu l-muhimmata sahlatan qabla ʾan ʾaqraʾa sh-shurūṭ.

I supposed the task to be easy before I read the conditions. (Formal.)

Confusing a predicate with a transferred theme

❌ أعطى المدير الموظف مسؤولا عن الملف.

Incorrect for ‘made the employee responsible’ — أعطى selects a recipient and something transferred, not an object predicate.

✅ جعل المدير الموظف مسؤولا عن الملف.

jaʿala l-mudīru l-muwaẓẓafa masʾūlan ʿani l-malaf.

The director made the employee responsible for the file.

Generalizing the frame to every cognition or perception verb

❌ سمعت الخبر صحيحا من مصدرين.

Incorrect as a general ‘heard that’ frame — سمع normally takes an أنّ proposition for acquired information.

✅ سمعت من مصدرين مستقلين أن الخبر صحيح.

samiʿtu min maṣdarayni mustaqillayni ʾanna l-khabara ṣaḥīḥ.

I heard from two independent sources that the report was correct.

Treating all traditional “sisters” as stylistic synonyms

❌ جعلت الهيئة الإجراء ضروريا.

Wrong if the authority merely judged the measure necessary — جعل means it caused or established that status, not simply that it held an opinion.

✅ رأت الهيئة الإجراء ضروريا في الظروف الحالية.

raʾati l-hayʾatu l-ʾijrāʾa ḍarūriyyan fī ẓ-ẓurūfi l-ḥāliyya(h).

The authority considered the measure necessary under the current circumstances. (Formal judgment.)

Key Takeaways

  • The two accusatives form one embedded predication: “consider/find/make X to be Y.”
  • The first object is the logical subject of that relation; the second is its predicate.
  • ظنّ، حسب، عدّ، رأى، وجد، جعل have distinct lexical meanings and are not freely interchangeable.
  • An attached pronoun can realize the first object, while an أنّ clause provides a fuller alternative with different internal case.
  • Transfer verbs such as أعطى may also take two accusatives, but recipient and theme do not form an X–Y predicate.
