Unless and Exceptive Conditions

English unless packages a condition and a negative consequence into one word. Modern Standard Arabic normally chooses between two more transparent architectures. إلا إذا means “except if / unless” and commonly places a perfect verb after إذا; ما لم presents non-occurrence as the condition, with لم + jussive, and often has the practical force “unless / so long as not.” A third, often clearest option is explicit إن لم “if not.” The ما in ما لم should not be translated mechanically as interrogative or relative “what.”

These patterns can describe similar practical conditions, but they organize scope differently. لن ننشر التقرير إلا إذا وافقت اللجنة starts with a negative main proposition and carves out one exception: “we will not publish except if the committee approves.” ما لم توافق اللجنة، فلن ننشر التقرير begins with the blocking negative condition: “unless the committee approves, we will not publish.” The intended exception, not an English dictionary gloss, determines the best frame. See when a conditional result needs فـ for the complete answer-clause inventory.

إلا إذا: a positive exception to a restricted proposition

The most natural home for إلا إذا is after a negative, restrictive, or necessity expression. The main clause establishes the default; إلا إذا names the condition under which that default does not hold.

لن نوقع العقد إلا إذا وافق الطرفان على الجدول الزمني

lan nuwaqqiʿa l-ʿaqda ʾillā ʾidhā wāfaqa ṭ-ṭarafāni ʿalā l-jadwali z-zamaniyy

We will not sign the contract unless both parties approve the timetable.

إلا marks the exception, while إذا introduces the condition. Neither particle here makes وافق jussive. The perfect is frequent after إذا even when the approval lies in the future; future time comes from the conditional relation and the future-negative main clause.

لا يسمح بالدخول إلى المختبر إلا إذا ارتدى الزائر معدات الوقاية

lā yusmaḥu bi-d-dukhūli ʾilā l-mukhtabari ʾillā ʾidhā rtadā z-zāʾiru muʿaddāti l-wiqāya(h)

Entry to the laboratory is not permitted unless the visitor wears protective equipment. (Formal rule.)

The exception can also follow a negative or otherwise inherently restrictive expression, such as لا يمكن “it is not possible” or affirmative يشترط “it is required.” English often shifts between unless, only if, and except when; Arabic keeps the exception relation explicit.

💡
Read إلا إذا from the outside in: إلا removes one case from the main clause’s default, and إذا presents that case as an expected or practically relevant condition. Do not assign jussive mood merely because English uses unless.

ما لم: the condition is non-occurrence

In ما لم, لم is the active mood governor. It requires a jussive imperfect, so a sound singular takes sukūn, a final-weak verb loses its weak letter, and one of the five verbs loses its mood nūn.

سنواصل العمل ما لم تظهر مشكلة جديدة

sanuwāṣilu l-ʿamala mā lam taẓhar mushkilatun jadīda(h)

We will continue working unless a new problem appears.

The postposed condition restricts the preceding main proposition. No result فـ is inserted because the main clause has already been stated.

ما لم يراجعوا الأرقام بعناية فسيكرروا الخطأ نفسه

mā lam yurājiʿū l-ʾarqāma bi-ʿināyatin fa-sayukarrirū l-khaṭaʾa nafsah

Unless they review the figures carefully, they will repeat the same error.

Indicative يراجعون loses nūn after لم. Because the negative condition now comes first and the result begins with future سـ, فـ introduces that result.

ما لم يسع الوسيط إلى حل وسط فسوف تتوقف المفاوضات

mā lam yasʿa l-wasīṭu ʾilā ḥallin wasaṭin fa-sawfa tatawaqqafu l-mufāwaḍāt

Unless the mediator seeks a compromise, the negotiations will stop. (Formal.)

Final-weak indicative يسعى becomes jussive يسعَ, visibly losing ى. The result verb remains indicative after سوف.

The construction often has a duration-like reading “so long as X does not happen”:

يبقى العرض ساريا ما لم تسحب الشركة موافقتها خطيا

yabqā l-ʿarḍu sāriyan mā lam tasḥabi sh-sharikatu muwāfaqatahā khaṭṭiyyan

The offer remains valid unless the company withdraws its approval in writing. (Legal/formal.)

Underlying jussive تسحبْ gains a helping kasra before the definite article. That connected vowel does not restore indicative mood.

إن لم and إذا لم make the negative condition explicit

إن لم is compositionally “if” plus past-negating لم, but in an open future condition it means “if X does not happen.” It is often clearer than an English-style attempt to force one word for unless.

إن لم تصلوا قبل إغلاق البوابة فلن تتمكنوا من ركوب الطائرة

ʾin lam taṣilū qabla ʾighlāqi l-bawwābati fa-lan tatamakkanū min rukūbi ṭ-ṭāʾira(h)

If you do not arrive before the gate closes, you will not be able to board the plane. (Addressed to a group.)

Both five-verb forms lose mood nūn, but for different reasons: لم governs jussive تصلوا, while لن governs subjunctive تتمكنوا. فـ marks the result boundary.

إذا لم frames non-occurrence as an expected practical contingency, often in procedures and warnings:

إذا لم يتلق العميل رسالة تأكيد خلال يومين فعليه الاتصال بالمصرف

ʾidhā lam yatalaqqa l-ʿamīlu risālata taʾkīdin khilāla yawmayni fa-ʿalayhi l-ittiṣālu bi-l-maṣrif

If the customer does not receive a confirmation message within two days, they should contact the bank. (Formal instruction.)

Here لم deletes the final weak letter of indicative يتلقى. The nominal result عليه الاتصال requires فـ.

Scope: unless does not simply mean “if not” everywhere

Negation makes scope crucial. Compare the following two structures:

لن نغير الموعد إلا إذا طلبت اللجنة ذلك

lan nugayyira l-mawʿida ʾillā ʾidhā ṭalabati l-lajnatu dhālik

We will not change the date unless the committee requests it. (Approval is the sole exception.)

سنغير الموعد ما لم تعترض اللجنة

sanugayyiru l-mawʿida mā lam taʿtariḍi l-lajna(h)

We will change the date unless the committee objects. (An objection blocks the change.)

The first sentence defaults to no change and permits one exception. The second defaults to change and names the event that blocks it. Translating both with unless hides opposite default commitments.

A negative inside the exception can be logically valid but hard to process: لن نغادر إلا إذا لم يصل المدير means “we will not leave except if the director does not arrive.” Formal prose should prefer a positive reformulation when possible rather than stacking negatives for display.

💡
Before choosing a form, state the default in plain English. If the default is negative and one event permits an exception, use إلا إذا. If the default continues until one blocking event occurs, ما لم is often clearer.

Clause order, tense, and formal reporting

Both main-first and condition-first orders are available. Main-first order presents the commitment before its limitation; condition-first order makes the condition the discourse frame and normally uses فـ when the following result is future, negative, nominal, or request-like.

لن تعتمد الهيئة التوصية إلا إذا أثبتت الدراسة سلامة الإجراء، وما لم يقدم الباحثون البيانات كاملة فستطلب الهيئة مراجعة مستقلة

lan taʿtamida l-hayʾatu t-tawṣiyata ʾillā ʾidhā ʾathbatati d-dirāsatu salāmata l-ʾijrāʾi, wa-mā lam yuqaddimi l-bāḥithūna l-bayānāti kāmilatan fa-sataṭlubu l-hayʾatu murājaʿatan mustaqilla(h)

The authority will not adopt the recommendation unless the study establishes that the procedure is safe; unless the researchers submit the data in full, the authority will request an independent review. (Formal regulatory prose.)

The perfect أثبتت after إذا has future reference in context. In the second condition, لم governs يقدمْ, pronounced with a helping kasra before the article. No mechanical English backshift is needed when a report remains prospective:

قال المدير إن الفريق لن يغادر ما لم يصل الرد الرسمي

qāla l-mudīru ʾinna l-farīqa lan yughādira mā lam yaṣili r-raddu r-rasmiyy

The director said that the team would not leave unless the official reply arrived. (The future relation is preserved inside the report.)

Common Mistakes

Giving إلا إذا jussive government

❌ لن ندفع المبلغ إلا إذا يرسل المورد الفاتورة

Incorrect — إلا إذا does not license a bare jussive imperfect here; a perfect after إذا is the natural formal frame.

✅ لن ندفع المبلغ إلا إذا أرسل المورد فاتورة صحيحة

lan nadfaʿa l-mablagha ʾillā ʾidhā ʾarsala l-muwarridu fātūratan ṣaḥīḥa(h)

We will not pay the amount unless the supplier sends a correct invoice.

Missing the jussive after ما لم

❌ ما لم تراجعون الطلبات فلن تكتمل العملية

Incorrect — لم requires the five-verb form to lose its mood nūn.

✅ ما لم تراجعوا الطلبات فلن تكتمل العملية اليوم

mā lam turājiʿū ṭ-ṭalabāti fa-lan taktamila l-ʿamaliyyatu l-yawm

Unless you review the applications, the process will not be completed today.

Omitting فـ after a preposed condition

❌ ما لم تنخفض التكاليف، سنؤجل التوسع

Incorrect in careful condition-first linkage — the future result beginning with سـ requires فـ.

✅ ما لم تنخفض التكاليف، فسنؤجل التوسع إلى العام المقبل

mā lam tankhafiḍi t-takālīfu, fa-sanuʾajjilu t-tawassuʿa ʾilā l-ʿāmi l-muqbil

Unless costs fall, we will postpone the expansion until next year.

Merging أنْ and أنّ inside the exception

❌ لن يقبلوا العرض إلا إذا أرادوا أن الاتفاق يستمر

Incorrect — after أرادوا, the desired event needs light أنْ plus a subjunctive verb.

✅ لن يقبلوا العرض إلا إذا أرادوا أن يستمر الاتفاق

lan yaqbalū l-ʿarḍa ʾillā ʾidhā ʾarādū ʾan yastamirra l-ittifāq

They will not accept the offer unless they want the agreement to continue.

Backshifting a still-future condition mechanically

❌ قال المدير إن الفريق لم يغادر غدا إلا إذا وصل الرد

Incorrect time framing — لم places departure in the past even though غدا makes it future relative to the report.

✅ قال المدير إن الفريق لن يغادر غدا إلا إذا وصل الرد الرسمي

qāla l-mudīru ʾinna l-farīqa lan yughādira ghadan ʾillā ʾidhā waṣala r-raddu r-rasmiyy

The director said that the team would not leave tomorrow unless the official reply arrived.

Key Takeaways

  • إلا إذا carves out a positive exception and commonly takes a perfect verb with future interpretation.
  • ما لم frames non-occurrence as the condition; لم governs the following imperfect in the jussive.
  • إن لم and إذا لم are often clearer when the intended meaning is transparently “if not.”
  • Main-first order normally needs no result فـ; a preposed condition does when the following result is future, nominal, request-like, or begins with negative ما or لن.
  • Always identify the default proposition and the event that blocks or overrides it; English unless can hide that scope.
