Conditional إنْ presents a possibility as open: if the condition is met, the result follows. It is especially useful for genuine contingencies, hypotheses, instructions, and general rules (neutral-to-formal MSA). Unlike English if, it is also a grammatical governor: an imperfect in its scope is jussive, and a directly verbal result can be jussive as well.
Unvocalized إن can look identical to the beginning of emphatic إنّ, but the structures are different. Conditional إنْ introduces a protasis (فعل الشرط); it does not assign accusative case to a noun. The following result (جواب الشرط) may stand as a bare jussive verb or may need linking فـ, depending on what kind of clause it is.
For all three inflectional patterns used below, see the jussive imperfect.
Two linked clauses
Start with two independent ideas, then make the first the condition for the second:
تصل مبكرا
taṣilu mubakkiran
You arrive early. (Statement to one man.)
تجد مقعدا قرب المنصة
tajidu maqʿadan qurba l-minaṣṣa(h)
You find a seat near the stage.
إن تصل إلى القاعة مبكرا تجد مقعدا قرب المنصة
ʾin taṣil ʾilā l-qāʿati mubakkiran tajid maqʿadan qurba l-minaṣṣa(h)
If you reach the hall early, you will find a seat near the stage.
Both imperfects are now jussive: تصلْ and تجدْ. Arabic needs no future marker in the result; futurity comes from the open conditional relation.
إن تراجعوا الأرقام تكتشفوا مصدر الخطأ
ʾin turājiʿū l-ʾarqāma taktashifū maṣdara l-khaṭaʾ
If you review the figures, you will discover the source of the error. (To a group.)
Underlying تراجعون / تكتشفون lose the mood nūn. This is the same jussive operation seen after لم, but here the particle supplies conditional rather than past-negative meaning.
Perfect form can point forward
The perfect does not inflect for mood, so it displays no jussive ending, but it can still stand in a conditional slot. In an open condition, a perfect often presents the condition as a complete threshold and receives future reference from the whole construction.
إن وصل القرار اليوم بدأنا التنفيذ غدا
ʾin waṣala l-qarāru l-yawma badaʾnā t-tanfīdha ghadan
If the decision arrives today, we will begin implementation tomorrow.
Neither وصل nor بدأنا is a narrative past here. The condition creates a prospective frame; the time adverbs confirm it. This use is normal formal Arabic, not an exceptional metaphorical tense.
Perfect and jussive imperfect can also mix:
إن تلقيتم الموافقة فلا تؤجلوا الحجز
ʾin talaqqaytumu l-muwāfaqata fa-lā tuʾajjilū l-ḥajz
If you receive approval, do not postpone the booking. (Formal instruction to a group.)
The perfect تلقيتم treats receipt as the triggering boundary. The result is a prohibition, so it begins with فـ; prohibitive لا then governs jussive تؤجلوا, with nūn deletion.
When the result needs فـ
A plain inflected verb can serve directly as the result, as تجدْ did above. A result that does not fit that bare verbal pattern is normally introduced by فـ, called فاء جواب الشرط. Important types include:
| Result type | Typical shape | Why فـ appears |
|---|---|---|
| nominal clause | فالموعد مناسب | no jussive verb can mark the dependency |
| future with سـ or سوف | فسنرسل / فسوف نرسل | the future clause has its own indicative architecture |
| imperative or prohibition | فاتصل / فلا تتأخر | the result is a directive |
| particle-initial result | فلن ننتظر / فقد انتهى | another particle begins the result clause |
إن كان الموعد مناسبا، فالحضور متاح لجميع الموظفين
ʾin kāna l-mawʿidu munāsiban, fa-l-ḥuḍūru mutāḥun li-jamīʿi l-muwaẓẓafīn
If the time is suitable, attendance is open to all employees.
إن لم يصل الرد قبل الظهر، فسنتصل بالوزارة
ʾin lam yaṣili r-raddu qabla ẓ-ẓuhri, fa-sanattaṣilu bi-l-wizāra(h)
If the reply does not arrive before noon, we will contact the ministry.
In the second example, لم locally governs jussive يصلْ and gives the imperfect the bounded negative meaning “has not arrived by the threshold.” The result begins with future سـ, so فـ explicitly attaches it to the condition.
Clause order, punctuation, and reference
Condition-first order foregrounds the contingency. A comma is helpful after a long protasis but is not the grammatical link. Result-first order is also natural when the speaker leads with the decision; the following إنْ clause then states a condition on that decision.
سأرسل إليك النسخة النهائية إن وافق المدير على التعديلات
saʾursilu ʾilayka n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata ʾin wāfaqa l-mudīru ʿalā t-taʿdīlāt
I will send you the final copy if the director approves the amendments.
No result فـ is inserted before the already stated main clause. The conditional can have the same or a different subject from the result; إنْ imposes no same-subject restriction. Agreement and explicit nouns identify the participants.
إن لم تصل الباحثتان قبل التاسعة، فليبدأ المنظم العرض من دونهما
ʾin lam taṣili l-bāḥithatāni qabla t-tāsiʿati, fal-yabdaʾi l-munaẓẓimu l-ʿarḍa min dūnihimā
If the two researchers do not arrive before nine, let the organizer begin the presentation without them.
Before the overt dual subject, verb-first تصلْ is singular feminine; its support i appears before the article in connected speech. The result has a different subject, المنظم.
إنْ compared with إذا
Both can translate if or when, but they package the situation differently. إنْ keeps fulfillment open, hypothetical, or rule-like. إذا commonly treats the event as expected, recurrent, or as a future time boundary. This is a discourse contrast, not a mathematical probability scale.
إن تجد خطأ فأبلغ المحرر
ʾin tajid khaṭaʾan fa-ʾablighi l-muḥarrir
If you find an error, notify the editor. (The error may or may not exist.)
إذا وصلت الشحنة فسيتصل بك موظف الاستقبال
ʾidhā waṣalati sh-shiḥnatu fa-sayattaṣilu bika muwaẓẓafu l-istiqbāl
When the shipment arrives, the receptionist will contact you. (Arrival is treated as expected.)
A formal policy sentence
إن أثبتت المراجعة وجود خلل جوهري في إجراءات الشراء، فستعلق المؤسسة العقود الجديدة، وستطلب من الإدارات المعنية أن تقدم خططا تصحيحية قبل نهاية الربع الحالي
ʾin ʾathbatati l-murājaʿatu wujūda khalalin jawhariyyin fī ʾijrāʾāti sh-shirāʾi, fa-satuʿalliqu l-muʾassasatu l-ʿuqūda l-jadīdata, wa-sataṭlubu mina l-ʾidārāti l-maʿniyyati ʾan tuqaddima khuṭaṭan taṣḥīḥiyyatan qabla nihāyati r-rubʿi l-ḥāliyy
If the review establishes a fundamental flaw in procurement procedures, the institution will suspend new contracts and require the relevant departments to submit corrective plans before the end of the current quarter. (Formal administrative prose.)
Perfect أثبتت receives prospective interpretation. The future result requires فـ, while embedded أن تقدمَ has its own subjunctive governor.
Common Mistakes
Retaining indicative nūn in a direct conditional pair
❌ إن تراجعون الشروط تفهمون سبب الرفض
Incorrect — direct imperfect verbs after إنْ and in its bare verbal result are jussive; both five-verbs forms lose nūn.
✅ إن تراجعوا الشروط تفهموا سبب الرفض
ʾin turājiʿū sh-shurūṭa tafhamū sababa r-rafḍ
If you review the terms, you will understand the reason for the rejection.
Reading every perfect as past time
❌ إن وصل القطار غدا وصل في الماضي
Incorrect analysis — غدا and the conditional frame give perfect وصل future reference.
✅ إن وصل القطار غدا فانتظرني عند البوابة الرئيسية
ʾin waṣala l-qiṭāru ghadan fa-ntaẓirnī ʿinda l-bawwābati r-raʾīsiyya(h)
If the train arrives tomorrow, wait for me at the main gate.
Omitting فـ before a future result
❌ إن وافق المجلس سنبدأ التنفيذ
Incomplete formal linkage — a result beginning with future سـ normally takes فاء جواب الشرط.
✅ إن وافق المجلس، فسنبدأ التنفيذ في مطلع الشهر
ʾin wāfaqa l-majlisu, fa-sanabdaʾu t-tanfīdha fī maṭlaʿi sh-shahr
If the council approves, we will begin implementation at the start of the month.
Confusing إنْ with إنّ
❌ إن المشروع ينجح نوسع البرنامج
Incorrect for an open condition — this reads like an ill-formed إنّ clause; conditional إنْ needs a conditional predicate and result structure.
✅ إن ينجح المشروع نوسع البرنامج ليشمل منطقتين أخريين
ʾin yanjaḥi l-mashrūʿu nuwassiʿi l-barnāmaja li-yashmala minṭaqatayni ʾukhrayayni
If the project succeeds, we will expand the program to include two other regions.
Copying English tense backshift
❌ قال المدير إنه كان سيوافق إن كانت اللجنة قدمت ضمانات غدا
Incorrect for a still-open future condition — stacked past forms mechanically copy English rather than locate the condition from the reporting viewpoint.
✅ قال المدير إنه سيوافق إن قدمت اللجنة ضمانات غدا
qāla l-mudīru ʾinnahu sayuwāfiqu ʾin qaddamati l-lajnatu ḍamānātin ghadan
The director said he would agree if the committee provided guarantees tomorrow.
Key Takeaways
- إنْ presents an open contingency and governs a following imperfect jussive.
- A directly verbal result can also be jussive; sound, weak-final, and five-verbs forms mark it differently.
- Perfect morphology can describe a completed future threshold inside the conditional frame.
- Use result فـ before nominal, future, imperative, negative, and other particle-initial apodoses.
- Clause order, time adverbs, and discourse viewpoint matter more than mechanical English tense matching.
