Exception with إلا

Arabic إلا removes one member from a set or restricts a statement to one focused element. The correct case after it depends on two prior questions: is the larger clause affirmative or negative, and has the set being restricted been stated? These questions produce three core patterns: complete positive exception, complete negative exception, and the “emptied” or mufarragh construction (الاستثناء المفرغ).

English except and only do not visibly change the noun that follows, so English speakers are tempted to give every post-إلا noun the same form. Arabic does the opposite: it makes the sentence architecture decisive. إلا itself is an exceptive particle, not a preposition, and it does not impose one invariant case on whatever follows.

Complete positive: the excluded term is accusative

A complete exception names the full set, traditionally المستثنى منه: “the employees,” “the files,” or “the committee members.” A positive clause contains no negation. In this pattern, the excluded term after إلا is obligatorily accusative in standard analysis.

شارك ممثلو المناطق إلا ممثلا واحدا بسبب المرض.

shāraka mumaththilū l-manāṭiqi ʾillā mumaththilan wāḥidan bi-sababi l-maraḍ.

All the regional representatives participated except one representative, because of illness.

The full parse is: perfect شاركَ is the verbal governor; nominative construct ممثلو is its subject and المناطقِ its genitive iḍāfa complement; إلا introduces the exception; indefinite accusative ممثلًا is the excluded term; accusative واحدًا agrees with it; بسبب المرض gives the cause. The singular verb agrees according to normal verb–subject order with the postverbal human plural subject. The post-إلا phrase does not become a second subject.

تغيب ممثل واحد من ممثلي المناطق.

taghayyaba mumaththilun wāḥidun min mumaththilī l-manāṭiq.

One regional representative was absent. (Simpler contemporary paraphrase.)

The paraphrase turns the excluded member into an ordinary nominative subject. It communicates the practical result but changes the information structure: the إلا version begins from the set and highlights the sole exception.

راجعت المدققة الملفات كلها إلا ملفين أرسلا بعد الموعد.

rājaʿati l-mudaqqiqatu l-malaffāti kullahā ʾillā malaffayni ʾursilā baʿda l-mawʿid.

The auditor reviewed all the files except two files that were sent after the deadline.

Accusative dual ملفين remains visibly oblique in ordinary unvocalized spelling. The passive relative predicate أرسلا is dual because its understood subject refers to the two files. Exception case and relative-clause agreement are separate domains.

💡
In a complete affirmative clause, do not look at the excluded noun's hypothetical role inside the first clause. Its actual construction is exception, and its case is accusative.

Complete negative: accusative exception or case-matching substitution

When the set is stated but the clause is negative, formal MSA allows two analyses. The excluded term may remain accusative as an exception, or it may be treated as a badal “substitute/appositive” matching the case that the stated set has in the clause. This is a real grammatical alternative, not free variation in one word's ending.

ما حضر الموظفون إلا خالدا.

mā ḥaḍara l-muwaẓẓafūna ʾillā Khālidan.

None of the employees attended except Khalid. (Accusative exception analysis.)

ما حضر الموظفون إلا خالد.

mā ḥaḍara l-muwaẓẓafūna ʾillā Khālidun.

None of the employees attended except Khalid. (Nominative substitution analysis.)

In the second analysis, خالدٌ matches nominative الموظفونُ because both identify the relevant subject set. In the first, خالدًا receives the dedicated accusative of exception. Both are standard (formal). Unvocalized خالد hides the contrast, but writers still need the analysis for agreement, coordinated dependents, and careful reading.

The matching option becomes especially instructive after a preposition:

لم أتحدث مع المشاركين إلا ليلى.

lam ʾataḥaddath maʿa l-mushārikīna ʾillā Laylā.

I did not speak with any of the participants except Layla. (Case-matching substitution; Layla's genitive is estimated.)

Because ليلى ends in ى, its genitive is estimated rather than audible. An explicit triptote name would show genitive -in under the matching analysis, while the exception analysis could use accusative -an. Modern editors often choose a recast such as تحدثت مع ليلى وحدها “I spoke with Layla alone” when a fully unambiguous reading matters.

Mufarragh: let the ordinary governor assign the case

In an emptied exception, the clause is negative or equivalent and no antecedent set is stated. إلا then has a restrictive meaning close to English only. The noun or phrase after it fills the open role required by the verb, preposition, or predicate. There is no automatic exception accusative.

ما حضر إلا خالد.

mā ḥaḍara ʾillā Khālidun.

Only Khalid attended.

Intransitive حضر still needs a subject, so nominative خالدٌ fills that role. The construction is mufarragh because no expression meaning “the employees/people” precedes إلا.

لم تراجع اللجنة إلا التقرير النهائي.

lam turājiʿi l-lajnatu ʾillā t-taqrīra n-nihāʾiyy.

The committee reviewed only the final report.

Transitive تراجعْ receives jussive from لم; nominative اللجنةُ is its subject; accusative التقريرَ النهائيَّ is its ordinary direct object. إلا marks restrictive focus but does not assign the object case or the verb's mood.

لم نتحدث إلا مع الخبير القانوني.

lam nataḥaddath ʾillā maʿa l-khabīri l-qānūniyy.

We spoke only with the legal expert.

The verb selects مع for the conversational partner, and مع governs genitive الخبيرِ. Moving the phrase after إلا does not break its internal government.

ما كان القرار إلا خطوة أولى.

mā kāna l-qarāru ʾillā khuṭwatan ʾūlā.

The decision was only a first step.

Here خطوةً is accusative because it is the predicate of كان, not because it follows إلا. Feminine أولى has estimated accusative on final ى.

💡
Temporarily remove إلا from a mufarragh sentence and ask what role the remaining gap needs: subject, object, predicate, or prepositional complement. That role determines case.

Negation, scope, and the meaning “only”

The restrictive reading depends on the negative architecture. لم يقرأ إلا الفصل الأول means “he read only the first chapter,” not “he did not read the first chapter.” The negation denies all alternatives, while إلا retains the focused one.

Scope changes when focus changes:

لم يرسل المدير التقرير إلا إلى الوزارة.

lam yursili l-mudīru t-taqrīra ʾillā ʾilā l-wizāra(h).

The director sent the report only to the ministry. (Recipient restricted.)

لم يرسل المدير إلا التقرير إلى الوزارة.

lam yursili l-mudīru ʾillā t-taqrīra ʾilā l-wizāra(h).

The director sent only the report to the ministry. (Thing sent restricted.)

Case alone cannot express this scope difference because التقريرَ is an object in both sentences. Place إلا immediately before the constituent being restricted, while preserving that constituent's internal syntax.

Exception is not specification

Compare a numeral specification with a complete positive exception:

راجع الفريق عشرين طلبا، واعتمد الطلبات إلا طلبا واحدا.

rājaʿa l-farīqu ʿishrīna ṭalaban, wa-ʿtamada ṭ-ṭalabāti ʾillā ṭalaban wāḥidan.

The team reviewed twenty applications and approved all the applications except one.

The first طلبًا is tamyīz, answering “twenty what?” The second is an excluded term, answering “which member was removed from the stated set?” Both are accusative and indefinite, but their semantic governors differ.

Agreement and coordinated excluded terms

The antecedent set remains the subject of a complete construction, so it controls the main clause's agreement. The excluded term has its own number and modifiers.

اكتملت المراحل كلها إلا المرحلة الأخيرة.

iktamalati l-marāḥilu kulluhā ʾillā l-marḥalata l-ʾakhīra(h).

All the stages were completed except the final stage.

Nonhuman plural المراحل takes feminine singular verb اكتملت. Accusative definite المرحلةَ الأخيرةَ is the excluded term in a complete affirmative sentence. Its adjective agrees in definiteness, gender, number, and case.

Multiple excluded members can be coordinated after one إلا, though a recast may be clearer when the list grows:

زار الوفد الأقسام إلا المختبر والمخزن بسبب أعمال الصيانة.

zāra l-wafdu l-ʾaqsāma ʾillā l-mukhtabara wa-l-makhzana bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).

The delegation visited the departments except the laboratory and the warehouse because of maintenance work.

Both excluded nouns are accusative in the positive complete construction. The coordinator does not create a second case rule.

A formal-genre example

لم تعتمد اللجنة من المقترحات إلا ما استوفى المعايير الفنية، ولم تستبعد أيا منها إلا مقترحين تعذر تمويلهما ضمن الموازنة الحالية.

lam taʿtamidi l-lajnatu mina l-muqtaraḥāti ʾillā mā stawfā l-maʿāyīra l-fanniyyata, wa-lam tastabʿid ʾayyan minhā ʾillā muqtaraḥayni taʿadhdhara tamwīluhumā ḍimna l-muwāzanati l-ḥāliyya(h).

The committee approved only proposals that met the technical criteria, and it excluded none of them except two proposals whose funding proved impossible within the current budget. (Formal administrative prose.)

In the first clause, من المقترحات states a domain but is not a syntactic antecedent occupying the object slot; relative ما استوفى... is the restricted object of تعتمد. In the second, accusative أيًّا is the stated object meaning “any one,” so the structure is complete negative. Dual مقترحين is formally compatible with both the accusative exception analysis and an accusative matching-substitution analysis because the antecedent is itself accusative. The surface ending converges, but the structural classification still explains the meaning.

Register and alternatives

إلا is neutral across contemporary formal registers. Other inherited exceptive expressions—such as حاشا and some uses of خلا/عدا—belong to elevated, literary, or specialized formal style and have their own government (literary, formal). They are not interchangeable decorations for everyday إلا. Prepositional باستثناء “with the exception of” is common in administrative prose and takes a genitive iḍāfa complement: باستثناءِ بندٍ واحدٍ.

اكتملت الإجراءات باستثناء بند واحد يحتاج إلى موافقة إضافية.

iktamalati l-ʾijrāʾātu bi-stithnāʾi bandin wāḥidin yaḥtāju ʾilā muwāfaqatin ʾiḍāfiyya(h).

The procedures were completed except for one item that requires additional approval. (Formal administrative alternative.)

Common Mistakes

Copying English order instead of classifying the sentence

❌ حضر الموظفون إلا خالد.

Incorrect as a fully inflected complete affirmative sentence if خالد is treated as nominative merely because English 'Khalid' follows 'except'; the excluded term must be accusative.

✅ حضر الموظفون إلا خالدا بسبب موعد طبي.

ḥaḍara l-muwaẓẓafūna ʾillā Khālidan bisababi mawʿidin ṭibbiyy.

All the employees attended except Khalid, because he had a medical appointment.

Forcing accusative in an emptied subject construction

❌ ما وصل إلا خالدا.

Incorrect—no antecedent set is stated, and intransitive وصل needs a nominative subject after إلا.

✅ ما وصل إلا خالد بعد إغلاق البوابة.

mā waṣala ʾillā Khālidun baʿda ʾighlāqi l-bawwāba(h).

Only Khalid arrived after the gate was closed.

Merging the governors of a restricted phrase

❌ لم نتحدث إلا الخبير القانوني.

Incorrect—تحدث requires its partner with مع or إلى; إلا does not replace the verb's preposition or govern الخبير directly.

✅ لم نتحدث إلا مع الخبير القانوني بشأن العقد.

lam nataḥaddath ʾillā maʿa l-khabīri l-qānūniyyi bishaʾni l-ʿaqd.

We spoke only with the legal expert about the contract.

Presenting a literary exceptive as the neutral default

حضر المدعوون حاشا خالدا.

ḥaḍara l-madʿuwwūna ḥāshā Khālidā.

All the invitees attended save Khalid. (Grammatical elevated or literary usage.)

✅ حضر المدعوون إلا خالدا.

ḥaḍara l-madʿuwwūna ʾillā Khālidā.

All the invitees attended except Khalid. (Neutral MSA.)

Key Takeaways

  • A complete positive exception states the set and requires the excluded term after إلا to be accusative.
  • A complete negative exception permits either accusative exception or case-matching substitution.
  • In a negative mufarragh construction with no stated set, the ordinary verb, predicate, or preposition assigns the post-إلا phrase's case.
  • Place إلا before the constituent in focus, and preserve that constituent's internal complements and agreement.
  • Neutral إلا is more productive than elevated inherited alternatives; use باستثناء when formal prose benefits from an explicit prepositional frame.
