In a sentence with several clauses, Arabic does not compute agreement from the nearest visible noun. Each finite predicate has its own controller inside its own clause. A matrix verb may agree with a committee, an embedded verb with nonhuman plural reports, and a relative-clause verb with a human antecedent—all within one sentence.
English speakers often follow linear order because English agreement is relatively sparse. Formal Arabic requires a structural reading: mark clause boundaries, identify the governor that assigns case or mood, and then locate the subject or antecedent controlling each predicate. Apparent “attraction” toward a nearby noun occurs in performance and informal usage, but edited MSA normally maintains grammatical control.
The two foundations are أنّ + Nominalized Content Clauses and Agreement with Coordinated Subjects; here they operate simultaneously across clause boundaries.
One sentence, several agreement domains
Consider a matrix clause followed by heavy أنّ and a verbal predicate:
أوضحت اللجنة أن التقارير وصلت إلى المراجعين في موعدها.
ʾawḍaḥati l-lajnatu ʾanna t-taqārīra waṣalat ʾilā l-murājiʿīna fī mawʿidihā.
The committee explained that the reports reached the reviewers on time. (Formal.)
The matrix verb أوضحت is feminine singular because its subject اللجنةُ is feminine singular. Heavy أنّ assigns accusative to التقاريرَ. Inside the embedded clause, that nonhuman plural controls feminine-singular وصلت and the anaphoric possessive ـها in موعدها. The nearby human plural المراجعين is governed by إلى and controls nothing.
أكد المدير أن المهندسات راجعن التصاميم التي وصلت أمس.
ʾakkada l-mudīru ʾanna l-muhandisāti rājaʿna t-taṣāmīma llatī waṣalat ʾams.
The director confirmed that the female engineers reviewed the designs that arrived yesterday.
Here matrix أكد agrees with masculine singular المدير. Embedded راجعن agrees with feminine human plural المهندساتِ, while relative-clause وصلت agrees with antecedent التصاميم, a nonhuman plural treated as feminine singular. Three predicates, three independently identified controllers.
Heavy أنّ changes case, not controller identity
Heavy أنّ makes its noun accusative but does not erase that noun’s ability to control the predicate. If the predicate is a finite verb, its mood comes from its own environment; أنّ does not make it subjunctive.
تبين أن البيانات غير مكتملة وأن نسختين مفقودتان.
tabayyana ʾanna l-bayānāti ghayru muktamilatin wa-ʾanna nuskhatayni mafqūdatāni.
It became clear that the data were incomplete and that two copies were missing. (Formal; case is overt.)
In the first complement, sound feminine plural البياناتِ is accusative after أنّ and controls feminine-singular predicate phrase غيرُ مكتملةٍ because it is nonhuman. In the coordinated second complement, dual نسختينِ is accusative as اسم أنّ, while predicate مفقودتانِ is nominative dual. A learner who copies the accusative ending across the whole clause would wrongly produce مفقودتين.
نعلم أن الباحثين يراجعون النتائج وأن الباحثتين ستنشران التحليل غدا.
naʿlamu ʾanna l-bāḥithīna yurājiʿūna n-natāʾija wa-ʾanna l-bāḥithatayni sa-tanshurāni t-taḥlīla ghadan.
We know that the researchers are reviewing the results and that the two female researchers will publish the analysis tomorrow.
The sound masculine plural noun loses no agreement power when it takes accusative -īna; it still controls plural يراجعون. Likewise accusative dual الباحثتينِ controls feminine dual ستنشران. Case marks the noun’s relation to أنّ; agreement expresses its features on the predicate.
Nonhuman plurals remain feminine singular inside clauses
Clause embedding does not suspend deflected agreement. A nonhuman plural normally controls feminine-singular verbs, adjectives, demonstratives, relative pronouns, and anaphoric or resumptive pronouns.
ذكرت الصحيفة أن القرارات الجديدة التي صدرت أمس ستظل نافذة حتى نهاية العام.
dhakarati ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu ʾanna l-qarārāti l-jadīdata llatī ṣadarat ʾamsi sa-taẓallu nāfidhatan ḥattā nihāyati l-ʿām.
The newspaper stated that the new decisions issued yesterday would remain in force until the end of the year. (Formal/news.)
القراراتِ is accusative after أنّ. It takes feminine-singular adjective الجديدة, relative pronoun التي, relative verb صدرت, matrix-within-embedded ستظل, and accusative predicate نافذةً after ظلّ. The sentence contains plural meaning, but Arabic agreement follows the nonhuman-plural rule consistently.
أفاد التقرير بأن الأجهزة والبرامج أصبحت أكثر استقرارا بعد التحديث.
ʾafāda t-taqrīru bi-ʾanna l-ʾajhizata wa-l-barāmija ʾaṣbaḥat ʾakthara istiqrāran baʿda t-taḥdīth.
The report stated that the devices and software had become more stable after the update. (Formal/technical.)
The coordinated controller consists of two nonhuman plurals and therefore still triggers feminine-singular أصبحت. أكثرَ is the accusative predicate of أصبحت, and استقرارا is its accusative specification. The final nearby singular التحديث has no role in that agreement.
Coordinated human subjects inside an embedded clause
For human coordination, word order matters inside the embedded clause just as it does in a main clause. A preverbal coordination controls resolved dual or plural agreement. A verb before an overt coordination normally stays singular and matches the first conjunct’s gender in conservative formal MSA.
أكدت المديرة أن خالدا وليلى سيقدمان العرض معا.
ʾakkadati l-mudīratu ʾanna khālidan wa-laylā sa-yuqaddimāni l-ʿarḍa maʿan.
The director confirmed that Khalid and Layla would give the presentation together. (Preverbal coordinated embedded subject; masculine dual agreement.)
Because the coordination follows أنّ, visible خالدًا is accusative and indeclinable ليلى shares the coordinated slot. The complete mixed-gender pair precedes its verb and controls masculine dual سيقدمان.
أكدت المديرة أنه سيقدم خالد وليلى العرض معا.
ʾakkadati l-mudīratu ʾannahu sa-yuqaddimu khālidun wa-laylā l-ʿarḍa maʿan.
The director confirmed that Khalid and Layla would give the presentation together. (Verb-first embedded event; conservative singular agreement.)
This second packaging uses أنّه with an anticipatory pronoun before a verbal clause; it is heavier and more marked than the first but exposes the contrast. Within the verbal clause, سيقدم precedes the coordinated subject and uses masculine singular agreement with first conjunct خالد. Do not create this structure merely to avoid a dual form; the preverbal coordinated version is often clearer.
قالت المديرة إنها ستبدأ الجلسة في موعدها إذا حضرت ليلى وخالد.
qālati l-mudīratu ʾinnahā sa-tabdaʾu l-jalsata fī mawʿidihā ʾidhā ḥaḍarat laylā wa-khālid.
The director said that she would start the session on time if Layla and Khalid attended. (Conditional clause; feminine singular agreement with the first postverbal conjunct.)
The conditional verb حضرت precedes the coordination and agrees with its first conjunct ليلى. Matrix قالت agrees with المديرة, while إنّ + ـها introduces the reported content and ستبدأ carries its own feminine-singular subject agreement.
Relative clauses select their own controller
A relative clause agrees with its antecedent, not with an intervening possessor or object. The relative pronoun itself is a valuable signal: الذي/التي/الذين identifies the antecedent’s features, while nonhuman plurals normally use feminine-singular التي.
قابلت الباحثة مديري المختبر الذين وافقوا على الخطة.
qābalati l-bāḥithatu mudīrī l-mukhtabari lladhīna wāfaqū ʿalā l-khuṭṭa.
The researcher met the laboratory directors who approved the plan. (الذين and وافقوا refer to the human plural directors, not the laboratory.)
راجعنا سجلات المختبر التي وصلت من الأرشيف صباحا.
rājaʿnā sijillāti l-mukhtabari llatī waṣalat mina l-ʾarshīfi ṣabāḥan.
We reviewed the laboratory records that arrived from the archive in the morning. (Feminine-singular relative agreement with nonhuman سجلات.)
In both examples, the genitive singular المختبر is linearly closest to the relative pronoun but is not the antecedent. Meaning and iḍāfa structure identify مديري or سجلات as the head. If either attachment is genuinely ambiguous, rewrite; agreement cannot rescue every semantically possible chain.
Agreement attraction: attested, but not the edited default
Speakers and writers sometimes allow a nearby noun to influence a predicate, especially in long, heavily nested sentences. Similar “agreement attraction” occurs in English (the key to the cabinets are...). Such slips are understandable processing effects, not a second general rule for formal MSA.
تشير مراجعة السجلات القديمة إلى أن نسبة الأخطاء انخفضت.
tushīru murājaʿatu s-sijillāti l-qadīmati ʾilā ʾanna nisbata l-ʾakhṭāʾi nkhafaḍat.
A review of the old records indicates that the error rate decreased. (Formal/academic.)
Matrix تشير agrees with feminine head مراجعةُ, not plural genitive السجلات. Embedded انخفضت agrees with feminine singular head نسبةَ, not plural genitive الأخطاء. Because both heads happen to be feminine singular, this example sounds smooth; other feature combinations expose attraction more clearly.
أظهر تحليل المقابلات أن مستوى الثقة ارتفع بوضوح.
ʾaẓhara taḥlīlu l-muqābalāti ʾanna mustawā th-thiqati rtafaʿa biwuḍūḥ.
Analysis of the interviews showed that the level of confidence rose clearly. (Both verbs agree with masculine singular heads, not nearby feminine nouns.)
The matrix head تحليلُ controls masculine أظهر despite nearby feminine plural المقابلات. Embedded head مستوى controls masculine ارتفع despite nearby feminine الثقة. In complex writing, shorten the chain if readers are likely to lose the controller.
Common Mistakes
Letting a prepositional plural control the verb
❌ أوضحت اللجنة أن التقرير وصلوا إلى المراجعين.
Incorrect—the embedded subject is singular التقرير; plural المراجعين is inside a prepositional phrase.
✅ أوضحت اللجنة أن التقرير وصل إلى جميع المراجعين.
ʾawḍaḥati l-lajnatu ʾanna t-taqrīra waṣala ʾilā jamīʿi l-murājiʿīn.
The committee explained that the report reached all the reviewers.
Giving a nonhuman plural human plural agreement
❌ ذكرت الصحيفة أن القرارات الذين صدروا أمس نافذون.
Incorrect—nonhuman القرارات takes feminine-singular التي، صدرت، نافذة.
✅ ذكرت الصحيفة أن القرارات التي صدرت أمس نافذة.
dhakarati ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu ʾanna l-qarārāti llatī ṣadarat ʾamsi nāfidha.
The newspaper stated that the decisions issued yesterday were in force.
Copying accusative case from اسم أنّ onto its predicate
❌ تبين أن النسختين مفقودتين.
Incorrect in fully inflected MSA—النسختين is accusative اسم أنّ, but the one-word predicate is nominative مفقودتان.
✅ تبين أن النسختين مفقودتان من ملف القضية.
tabayyana ʾanna n-nuskhatayni mafqūdatāni min malaffi l-qaḍiyya.
It became clear that the two copies were missing from the case file.
Agreeing with the nearest genitive noun
❌ أظهر تحليل المقابلات أن مستوى الثقة ارتفعت.
Incorrect—feminine الثقة is a genitive dependent; masculine head مستوى controls ارتفع.
✅ أظهر تحليل المقابلات أن مستوى الثقة ارتفع تدريجيا.
ʾaẓhara taḥlīlu l-muqābalāti ʾanna mustawā th-thiqati rtafaʿa tadrījiyyan.
Analysis of the interviews showed that the level of confidence rose gradually.
Carrying one matrix subject into every embedded predicate
❌ أكدت المديرة أن المهندسات راجعت التصاميم.
Incorrect in subject-first embedded order—the human plural المهندسات controls feminine-plural راجعن, not matrix singular المديرة.
✅ أكدت المديرة أن المهندسات راجعن التصاميم مرتين.
ʾakkadati l-mudīratu ʾanna l-muhandisāti rājaʿna t-taṣāmīma marratayn.
The director confirmed that the female engineers reviewed the designs twice.
Key Takeaways
- Agreement is clause-local: identify a controller separately for every finite predicate.
- Heavy أنّ assigns accusative to its noun but does not erase that noun’s agreement features.
- Nonhuman plurals continue to trigger feminine-singular agreement inside embedded and relative clauses.
- Human coordination follows the same order-sensitive rules inside embedded clauses as in main clauses.
- Nearby objects, prepositional nouns, and iḍāfa dependents do not become controllers through proximity; rewrite structures that invite attraction.
