Exclamatives with ما أفعل، أفعل به، and يا له من

Arabic exclamation is not formed by translating English how and adding an exclamation mark. Formal MSA has two inherited fixed patterns—ما أَفْعَلَهُ! and أَفْعِلْ بِهِ!—as well as the productive rhetorical frame يا له من...! and ordinary evaluative sentences such as المنظر رائع حقا “the view is truly wonderful.” These choices differ in morphology, argument marking, and register.

The inherited patterns are best learned as constructions. Their central word resembles an ordinary perfect verb or imperative, but it does not express an ordinary past event or command. It packages an evaluation as an exclamation and assigns a fixed grammatical role to the entity evaluated.

Because the same أفعل outline also appears in comparison, keep the constructional tests here alongside The Elative: “More” and “Most”.

Neutral evaluation versus inherited exclamation

A neutral statement predicates a quality. An exclamative presents the speaker’s heightened reaction to its degree.

المدينة جميلة في الربيع.

al-madīnatu jamīlatun fī r-rabīʿ.

The city is beautiful in spring. (Neutral statement.)

ما أجمل المدينة في الربيع!

mā ʾajmala l-madīnata fī r-rabīʿ!

How beautiful the city is in spring! (Inherited formal exclamative.)

The second sentence does not ask for a measure of beauty. ما is exclamatory, not interrogative; أجملَ has the fixed أفعل exclamative shape; and المدينةَ is accusative as the entity whose quality evokes the reaction.

المنظر عند الغروب رائع حقا.

al-manẓaru ʿinda l-ghurūbi rāʾiʿun ḥaqqan.

The view at sunset is truly magnificent. (Neutral contemporary formal MSA.)

ما أروع المنظر عند الغروب!

mā ʾarwaʿa l-manẓara ʿinda l-ghurūb!

How magnificent the view is at sunset! (Formal/rhetorical.)

The evaluative sentence is usually more natural in a report, conversation, or straightforward compliment. The inherited exclamative is fully grammatical but carries deliberate rhetorical color (formal/literary).

💡
Use the inherited pattern when the heightened style is part of the message. For ordinary praise, a nominal predicate plus حقا، جدا، للغاية is often the contemporary default.

Pattern one: ما أفعله

Traditional parsing treats ما as an exclamatory element in a nominal construction and the following أفعل form as a fixed, past-shaped exclamative verb. Its subject is a mandatory hidden pronoun, and the overt entity evaluated is accusative. The pattern is conventionally cited as ما أَفْعَلَ زيدًا! or with an attached object pronoun ما أَفْعَلَهُ!.

ما أكرم المضيف!

mā ʾakrama l-muḍīfa!

How generous the host is! (المضيفَ is accusative.)

ما أدق ملاحظات الباحثة!

mā ʾadaqqa mulāḥaẓāti l-bāḥitha!

How precise the researcher’s observations are! (Formal/academic praise; ملاحظاتِ is accusative.)

In the second example, sound feminine plural ملاحظاتِ shows accusative -āti, and الباحثة is a genitive possessor. The plural meaning does not conjugate fixed أدقّ. The construction does not alternate to an ordinary plural verb.

An attached pronoun can occupy the accusative slot when the referent is established:

قرأت الخاتمة مرتين؛ ما أبلغها!

qaraʾtu l-khātimata marratayni; mā ʾablaghahā!

I read the conclusion twice; how eloquent it is! (Literary/formal.)

The suffix ـها is an accusative object pronoun referring to الخاتمة. It is not a feminine agreement ending on أبلغ.

Pattern two: أفعل به

The second inherited pattern has an imperative-shaped form plus بـ: أَجْمِلْ بالسماءِ! “How beautiful the sky is!” Traditional grammar calls the noun after بـ genitive in form but in the subject position in syntactic analysis: مجرور لفظا مرفوع محلا على الفاعلية. For production, two facts matter most: the بـ is obligatory, and the construction is not a command addressed to the noun.

أجمل بالسماء بعد المطر!

ʾajmil bi-s-samāʾi baʿda l-maṭar!

How beautiful the sky is after the rain! (Inherited formal/literary pattern; السماءِ is genitive in form after بـ.)

أكرم بالمتطوعين في هذه المبادرة!

ʾakrim bil-mutaṭawwiʿīna fī hādhihi l-mubādara!

How generous the volunteers in this initiative are! (Formal/rhetorical; the sound masculine plural shows genitive -īna.)

The apparent imperative أكرمْ does not tell anyone to honor the volunteers; it evaluates them. Compare the genuine ordinary imperative:

أكرم المتطوعين واشكرهم على وقتهم.

ʾakrimi l-mutaṭawwiʿīna wa-shkurhum ʿalā waqtihim.

Honor the volunteers and thank them for their time. (Ordinary imperative, not an exclamative.)

Here المتطوعين is a direct object, not a بـ phrase. Context, the obligatory preposition, and discourse force distinguish the two constructions.

💡
In أفعل به, preserve both fixed pieces: the imperative-shaped أفعلْ and بـ before the evaluated entity. Dropping بـ changes the parse into an ordinary imperative.

Which adjectives can enter the inherited patterns?

Traditional grammar restricts direct formation to a verb that is typically triliteral, fully inflecting, active, affirmative, complete rather than a ناقص verb, gradable, and not one whose adjective normally has the color/defect pattern أفعل/فعلاء. Modern usage retains familiar lexicalized exclamatives, but speakers do not freely manufacture one from every adjective.

When a quality cannot enter directly, use a support exclamative such as ما أشدّ... “how intense...” or ما أكثر... “how much/many...,” followed by an accusative maṣdar or suitable noun. A neutral evaluative sentence is often simpler.

ما أشد احمرار الأفق قبيل الغروب!

mā ʾashadda ḥmirāra l-ʾufuqi qubayla l-ghurūb!

How intense the reddening of the horizon is just before sunset! (Formal/literary support construction.)

Directly inventing an exclamative from color adjective أحمر is blocked by the inherited morphological restrictions. احمرارَ is the accusative entity measured by fixed أشدّ.

الازدحام شديد بصورة غير معتادة هذا المساء.

al-izdiḥāmu shadīdun biṣūratin ghayri muʿtādatin hādhā l-masāʾ.

The congestion is unusually severe this evening. (Neutral contemporary alternative.)

This is an honest area for memorization. The traditional conditions explain broad limits, but lexical acceptability and genre still matter. When a theoretically possible coinage sounds mannered, use an established exclamative or a plain predicate.

يا له من: a productive rhetorical frame

يا له من + indefinite noun evaluates a person, thing, or situation: يا له من يوم! “What a day!” The pronoun after لـ agrees with the referent—له، لها، لهم—while من introduces an indefinite description. The frame is productive in speeches, essays, journalism, and literary narration (formal/rhetorical/literary).

يا لها من فرصة نادرة للتعاون بين الجامعات!

yā lahā min furṣatin nādiratin lit-taʿāwuni bayna l-jāmiʿāt!

What a rare opportunity for cooperation among the universities! (Formal/rhetorical.)

يا لهم من فريق متماسك رغم ضيق الوقت!

yā lahum min farīqin mutamāsikin raghma ḍīqi l-waqt!

What a cohesive team they are despite the limited time! (Rhetorical praise.)

يا له من قرار متسرع؛ كان ينبغي نشر الأدلة أولا!

yā lahu min qarārin mutasarriʿin; kāna yanbaghī nashru l-ʾadillati ʾawwalan!

What a hasty decision; the evidence should have been published first! (Editorial/rhetorical blame.)

The construction can praise or criticize; adjectives and context provide the polarity. يا here does not necessarily call to a hearer. It contributes exclamatory presentation, much as vocative material can be recruited for expressive force.

Exclamation, questions, elatives, and compliments

Interrogative كيف asks “how?”: كيف أصبحت المدينة أجمل؟ asks by what process the city became more beautiful. It does not function as English exclamatory how before an adjective. Likewise ordinary أفعل can be an elative meaning “more/most”: هذا الطريق أقصر من ذاك “this road is shorter than that one.” In ما أقصر الطريق!, however, the entire fixed frame makes أقصر exclamative.

كيف أصبحت الخدمة أسرع بعد التحديث؟

kayfa ʾaṣbaḥati l-khidmatu ʾasraʿa baʿda t-taḥdīth?

How did the service become faster after the update? (Real question about manner or process.)

ما أسرع الخدمة بعد التحديث!

mā ʾasraʿa l-khidmata baʿda t-taḥdīth!

How fast the service is after the update! (Exclamative; no answer requested.)

In everyday professional praise, عرضك ممتاز “your presentation is excellent” is more direct than an inherited formula. The exclamative adds stance and rhetorical prominence; it is not grammatically required for every compliment.

Common Mistakes

Translating exclamatory “how” with كيف

❌ كيف جميل هذا المشهد!

Incorrect—كيف is interrogative here and cannot simply copy English exclamatory ‘how + adjective.’

✅ ما أجمل هذا المشهد عند الفجر!

mā ʾajmala hādhā l-mashhada ʿinda l-fajr!

How beautiful this scene is at dawn!

Conjugating the fixed exclamative as an ordinary verb

❌ ما أجملوا المتطوعين!

Incorrect—the inherited ما أفعل pattern stays fixed; a plural evaluated entity does not trigger plural verb agreement.

✅ ما أكرم المتطوعين في هذه الحملة!

mā ʾakrama l-mutaṭawwiʿīna fī hādhihi l-ḥamla!

How generous the volunteers in this campaign are!

Dropping required argument marking

❌ أجمل السماء بعد المطر!

Incorrect for the inherited أفعل به construction—the evaluated noun requires بـ: أجمل بالسماء.

✅ أجمل بالسماء الصافية بعد المطر!

ʾajmil bi-s-samāʾi ṣ-ṣāfiyati baʿda l-maṭar!

How beautiful the clear sky is after the rain!

Reading أفعل as a comparative regardless of construction

❌ ما أروع الخطاب يعني أن الخطاب أروع من خطاب آخر.

Incorrect—the fixed exclamative expresses a heightened evaluation; it does not require a comparison set.

✅ ما أروع الخطاب الختامي في صياغته وإيقاعه!

mā ʾarwaʿa l-khiṭāba l-khitāmiyya fī ṣiyāghatihi wa-ʾīqāʿih!

How magnificent the closing speech is in its wording and rhythm!

Using high rhetoric as the only everyday option

❌ يجب أن أقول يا له من فنجان قهوة ممتاز في كل موقف عادي.

Incorrect advice—this falsely makes one heightened rhetorical formula obligatory in every ordinary compliment.

✅ هذه القهوة ممتازة، وشكرا على إعدادها.

hādhihi l-qahwatu mumtāzatun, wa-shukran ʿalā ʾiʿdādihā.

This coffee is excellent; thank you for making it. (Neutral contemporary compliment.)

Key Takeaways

  • ما أفعله is a fixed exclamative with an accusative evaluated entity; it is not interrogative ما plus an ordinary past verb.
  • أفعل به uses an imperative-shaped fixed form and obligatory بـ; it does not issue a command.
  • Not every adjective can enter the inherited patterns directly. Support forms such as ما أشدّ + maṣdar or a neutral predicate are often required.
  • يا له من is productive but rhetorically marked, and its pronoun must match the referent.
  • Plain evaluative sentences and compliments are usually the unmarked contemporary choice; inherited formulas add formal or literary force.
