Original Dialogue: At a Produce Market

This original exchange takes place at a generic produce stall. Every price is invented for grammar practice; none is a current market quotation or exchange-rate claim. The interaction moves from price and currency to weight, product choice, quantity-based bargaining, packaging, total, and change.

The urban Beirut baseline uses هاي for a feminine item and هول for visible plurals. Bargaining is plausible in this fictional open-market setting, but it is not presented as obligatory in every Lebanese shop.

Line-by-line grammar and transaction work

LineFormFunction
1قديش حق...؟ / بالليرة؟Asks both the price and its currency before the customer commits.
2بمية وعشرين ألفPrice بـ attaches to the amount; the seller omits repeated ليرة because the currency was just confirmed.
3كيلوين منها / نص كيلوThe dual measure expresses two kilos; ـها resumes feminine mass noun البندورة.
4الكيلو / بدك شي تاني؟States a unit price, then opens another purchase slot without pressuring.
5هول الليموناتPlural demonstrative identifies a visible set; the price noun remains bare حق.
6التلاتةA definite quantity expression refers to three of the established lemons.
7إذا أخدت... بتعملليThe customer offers quantity as a reason for a concession instead of accusing the seller.
7–8ياهنIndependent يا carries the plural object after an already suffixed verb.
8لحالنThe plural suffix refers to the six lemons as a separate package.
9البندورة... تنكبسTomatoes are construed as one grouped produce quantity, triggering feminine-singular reference.
10تلتمية وسبعين ألف ليرةThe large amount is built high-to-low and takes one singular currency noun.
11–12تفضل / الباقيHands over payment, then closes the arithmetic with explicit change.

The price figures are fictional, but the grammar is stable. In a real transaction, repeat the currency and conversion basis whenever the context is ambiguous; the money page explains why a bare number may be unsafe in Lebanon.

Weights and counted produce

كيلوين already means “two kilos.” English requires a separate two, but neutral Lebanese does not need اتنين كيلوين. نص كيلو treats نص as the fraction before the measure. The produce noun can follow the measure directly or be resumed with a suffix once established.

The dialogue shifts between two construals:

  • البندورة is a produce mass or grouped quantity, so منها and feminine تنكبس are natural;
  • الليمونات are six salient individual fruits, so plural ياهن and لحالن keep them individuated.

This is not random agreement. The discourse first points to the lemons as هول, counts them, bargains over six, and packages them together.

💡
Track how the produce is construed. A market mass can be resumed as feminine singular; a counted visible set can remain plural across demonstrative, object pronoun, and packaging phrase.

Bargaining without turning the exchange hostile

The customer does not say “your price is wrong.” He proposes a larger purchase and asks whether a new total works: إذا أخدت ستة، بتعمللي ياهن بتسعين؟ The conditional makes the concession reciprocal.

If the price is fixed or the customer does not want to bargain, the sequence can move directly to purchase:

ماشي، عطيني تلاتة بس وخليهن مع الخيار.

mēshe, ʿṭīne tlēte bass w-khallīhon maʿ el-khyār.

Okay, give me just three and keep them with the cucumbers. (accepting the stated price)

If the amount was unheard, repeat the uncertain number rather than asking the seller to restart:

تسعين ألف للستة، صح؟

tisʿīn alef lis-sitte, ṣaḥḥ?

Ninety thousand for six, right? (targeted price confirmation)

Clitic boundaries in rapid speech

Three forms are easy to hear as unanalyzed blocks:

  • عطيني = عطي + ـني, “give me”;
  • بتعمللي = بتعمل + لـ + ـي, “can you do for me”;
  • حطلك = حط + لـ + ـك, “put for you.”

In بتعمللي ياهن, the recipient/beneficiary “for me” is already attached, so the lemons appear as independent object ياهن. Stacking a second ordinary suffix on the verb would obscure the two roles. Review the broader transaction frames on shopping and bargaining.

Alternatives and repair

If منها has more than one possible feminine antecedent, replace it with the noun:

قصدي كيلوين بندورة، مش كيلوين خيار.

ʾaṣde kīlowēn bandōra, mish kīlowēn khyār.

I mean two kilos of tomatoes, not two kilos of cucumbers. (repairing an unclear suffix)

If the customer is unsure whether the figure is a unit price, a candidate understanding is safer than guessing:

يعني المية وعشرين للكيلو الواحد؟

yaʿne l-miyye w-ʿishrīn lil-kīlo l-wāḥad?

So the one hundred twenty is for one kilo? (unit-price check)

Follow-up transformation task

Begin with a quantity-conditioned offer involving six lemons:

إذا أخدت ست ليمونات، بتتركلي ياهن بتسعين؟

iza akhadet sitt laymūnāt, btitrokle yēhon b-tisʿīn?

If I take six lemons, can you let me have them for ninety thousand? (fictional offer)

Change the produce to four oranges and the proposed amount to sixty. Keep the counted noun plural and the resumed object plural:

إذا أخدت أربع برتقالات، بتتركلي ياهن بستين؟

iza akhadet arbaʿ bortoʾālāt, btitrokle yēhon b-sittīn?

If I take four oranges, can you let me have them for sixty thousand? (fictional offer)

Next, practice a non-bargaining version by replacing the conditional with عطيني... بس “give me ... only.”

What this dialogue recycles

  • قديش حق...؟ for price and بـ + amount for a quoted price.
  • Dual and fractional measures: كيلوين، نص كيلو.
  • Course demonstratives هاي، هول، هاد.
  • Number phrases and a singular currency noun after a large total.
  • Recipient and object packaging: عطيني، بتعمللي ياهن، حطلك ياهن.
  • Conditional bargaining with إذا, plus targeted repair and confirmation.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong price suffix

❌ قديش حقه هاي البندورة؟

Incorrect — the visible produce noun is feminine, so a resumptive price suffix would be حقها.

✅ قديش حقها هاي البندورة البلدية؟

ʾaddēsh ḥaʾʾa hāy el-bandōra l-baladiyye?

How much are these local tomatoes?

Overmarking two before a dual measure

❌ عطيني اتنين كيلوين بطاطا.

Overmarked in the neutral measure phrase — كيلوين already expresses two kilos.

✅ عطيني كيلوين بطاطا ونص كيلو بصل.

ʿṭīne kīlowēn baṭāṭa w-noṣṣ kīlo baṣal.

Give me two kilos of potatoes and half a kilo of onions.

Replacing يا with a second ordinary object suffix

❌ بتعملليهن بسعر أحسن؟

The intended roles are unclear — for ‘do them for me,’ keep beneficiary ـلي and express the items with ياهن.

✅ بتعمللي ياهن بسعر أحسن إذا أخدت الصندوق كله؟

btiʿmille yēhon b-siʿer aḥsan iza akhadet eṣ-ṣondūʾ killo?

Can you give me a better price for them if I take the whole box?

Pluralizing the currency after a large amount

❌ المجموع تلتمية وسبعين ألف ليرات.

Incorrect — the large amount takes singular ليرة.

✅ المجموع ميتين وتسعين ألف ليرة مع التوصيل.

el-mazhmūʿ mitēn w-tisʿīn alef līra maʿ et-tawṣīl.

The total is two hundred ninety thousand lira including delivery. (fictional total)

Key Takeaways

A complete market interaction coordinates quantity, reference, and social action. Ask price and currency explicitly, use dual or fractional measures without English overmarking, keep visible plural produce alive through هول... ياهن... لحالن, and bargain by connecting a concession to quantity. Finish with an exact total and change; invented classroom figures never substitute for checking real prices or currency conditions.
