Urban Lebanese has no single polite mood and no rule that a longer request is always better. Speakers choose among an imperative, فيك...؟ ؟, a willingness clause such as إذا بتريد, a reason, and appreciation. The choice reflects entitlement—how reasonable it is for this speaker to expect this action from this listener—plus effort, urgency, relationship, and setting.
English please can be added to almost any request shell. Lebanese politeness is distributed across the whole turn: grammar, agreement, reason, voice, address, and how the speaker responds to acceptance or refusal.
Bare imperatives are direct, not automatically rude
An imperative presents the action as the next thing to do. It is natural when the request is small and expected, the relationship is close, or urgency makes negotiation secondary.
sakker el-bēb wrāk, el-hawa ʾawe.
Close the door behind you; the draft is strong. (informal household request to one man)
dīre bālik, fī sayyāra zhēye!
Watch out, a car is coming! (urgent warning to one woman)
In a shared household, closing the door may be routine and low-cost. In an emergency, speed outranks mitigation. The same bare command to an unfamiliar worker for a personal favor can sound needlessly entitled.
zhīble kēset mayy law samaḥt.
Bring me a glass of water, please. (direct but softened; appropriate depends on relationship)
Adding لو سمحت softens the directive but does not erase its imperative grammar. The listener still hears “do this,” not a question about availability.
فيك foregrounds the listener's ability or availability
فيك / فيكي / فيكن + bare imperfect asks whether the addressee can perform the action. Both parts agree with the listener. The full morphology is charted under polite request frames.
fīk trēzheʿ har-raʾmēn ʾabel el-izhtimēʿ?
Could you check these two numbers before the meeting? (professional request to one man)
fīke tibʿatīle l-ʿonwēn lamma tūṣale?
Could you send me the address when you arrive? (informal request to one woman)
fīkon twaṭṭo ṣawtkon shwayy?
Could you all lower your voices a little? (polite request to a group)
The following verb is bare—no ordinary b-—but fully agrees: تراجع، تبعتي، توطوا. A rising or suspended contour leaves room for a response. A clipped fall can turn the same wording into an impatient prompt.
ممكن foregrounds feasibility
Invariant ممكن frames the requested action as possible. The following bare verb identifies who should act: ممكن ساعدك؟ asks permission for “me” to help; ممكن تساعدني؟ asks “you” to help.
momken tsāʿedne iḥmel haṣ-ṣondūʾ?
Could you help me carry this box? (polite everyday request to one man)
momken ākhod mawʿed la-bokra baʿd eḍ-ḍohor?
Could I get an appointment for tomorrow afternoon? (polite service request)
momken ma tḥoṭṭo mūsīʾa waʾet el-ʿarḍ?
Could you not play music during the presentation? (polite negative request to a group)
فيك profiles the addressee's capacity or availability; ممكن profiles the action's feasibility. In many everyday requests both are courteous and differ more in framing than in a fixed politeness rank.
إذا بتريد and reasons reduce assumed entitlement
إذا بتريد “if you want/if you don't mind” explicitly makes willingness relevant (polite spoken). It is useful for an extra favor or when the speaker has limited right to expect compliance.
iza btrīd, fīk ttrok el-miftēḥ ʿind el-bawwēb?
If you don't mind, could you leave the key with the doorman? (polite request to one man)
iza btrīde, momken tghayyrīle l-mawʿed lal-zhomʿa?
If you don't mind, could you move my appointment to Friday? (polite request to one woman)
A concise reason can make the practical need visible. It should inform, not manipulate.
Could you send me the answer today? I won't be in the office tomorrow. (professional request with a reason)
English speakers sometimes put a long apology before a simple request. Lebanese can be warm and explanatory, but piling إذا بتريد، لو سمحت، إذا ما في إزعاج، ممكن، فيك... into one small favor sounds ceremonious or anxious. Choose the amount of mitigation that matches the imposition.
Entitlement, effort, and relationship
| Situation | Likely frame | Why |
|---|---|---|
| urgent safety warning | imperative | immediate action is expected |
| routine act between intimates | imperative or b-imperfect question | shared obligations lower the social cost |
| ordinary favor | فيك / ممكن + bare verb | makes response space explicit |
| extra work from a new colleague or client | modal frame + reason + appreciation | lower entitlement and higher effort |
| institutional service | ممكن / فيني + softener | clear, courteous transaction |
Power alone does not predict wording. A manager may use a direct imperative for an established duty but mitigate an after-hours favor. A close friend may use ممكن because the requested effort is large. Politeness is locally negotiated rather than encoded by one hierarchy.
Appreciation and response
After compliance, شكرا كتير and يعطيك العافية acknowledge effort. A response can accept, decline with a reason, or offer an alternative.
akīd, hallaʾ bbaʿatlak yē.
Sure, I'll send it to you now. (informal acceptance)
el-yōm ma fīne, bass fīne khallṣo bokra ṣ-ṣoboḥ.
I can't today, but I can finish it tomorrow morning. (professional refusal plus alternative)
shukran ktīr, ʿanzhad rayyaḥtne.
Thanks so much—you really helped me out. (warm appreciation to one man)
A softened refusal is still a refusal. Unlike some hospitable offers, an ordinary request does not license pressure after ما فيني “I can't.” Accept the uptake or renegotiate openly.
Mini-dialogue 1: siblings at home
Relationship: adult siblings preparing dinner. Closing the window is a tiny shared task, so a direct imperative is natural rather than hostile.
sakker esh-shobbēk shwayy, ed-dinye bardet.
Close the window a little; it's gotten cold. (informal direct request to a brother)
ē ḥāḍer, bass khallīne ṭaffe l-ghēz.
Sure—just let me turn off the gas. (informal acceptance with a brief delay)
The uptake حاضر confirms compliance. The delay is explained, not treated as refusal.
Mini-dialogue 2: a new client and a designer
Relationship: a client asks for an additional revision not covered in the first draft. Lower entitlement and real effort motivate a modal frame and reason.
iza btrīde, momken tʿaddle lōn el-ʿonwēn kamēn marra? laʾann esh-shiʿār el-zhdīd aghmaʾ.
If you don't mind, could you change the title color once more? The new logo is darker. (professional request to one woman)
akīd, bʾdar ibʿatlak noskha zhdīde ʾabel eḍ-ḍohor.
Certainly, I can send you a new copy before noon. (professional acceptance)
Repair: the same request with different force
btibʿatle l-malaf el-yōm?
Will you send me the file today? (can sound like an impatient reminder with a clipped fall)
ʾaṣde lamma tifḍa, fīk tibʿatle l-malaf el-yōm law samaḥt?
I mean, when you're free, could you send me the file today, please? (repair that restores response space)
The repair adds timing flexibility, a conventional request frame, and a softener. A calmer rising contour matters as much as the added words.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the b-marker after a modal request frame
Incorrect in the Beirut request frame — ممكن licenses bare تساعدني.
momken tsāʿedne b-hash-shaghle baʿd el-ghada?
Could you help me with this after lunch?
Losing gender agreement across فيك and the verb
fīke tishraḥīle l-fikra yā Māya?
Could you explain the idea to me, Maya?
Assuming “please” neutralizes a command
Too commanding for the intended first service encounter; لو سمحت does not erase the imperative and هلق adds urgency.
law samaḥt, momken tzhīble l-ʾahwe lamma tifḍa?
Excuse me, could you bring me the coffee when you're free?
Stacking every softener with an intimate
Overmitigated for a tiny routine request between close friends; the stack sounds ceremonious.
fīk tsakker el-bēb shwayy?
Could you close the door a little?
Key Takeaways
- Directness is calibrated to entitlement, effort, urgency, relationship, and setting; imperatives are not inherently rude.
- فيك/فيكي/فيكن foreground the listener's availability, while invariant ممكن foregrounds feasibility.
- Both modal frames take a bare agreeing action, without ordinary b-.
- إذا بتريد, a concise reason, appropriate intonation, and appreciation can reduce assumed entitlement.
- A polite refusal to a request is real uptake: accept it or negotiate an alternative rather than pressing automatically.
