Ability and Possibility with في plus Suffix

Lebanese builds one of its most common “can” constructions from في plus a personal suffix: فيني “I can,” فيك “you can,” فيها “she can.” The suffix identifies the person for whom the action is possible, and the following action is an agreeing bare imperfect.

English can covers learned skill, situational possibility, permission, and requests. Suffixed في is especially natural for what circumstances allow now or at a relevant time, but it overlaps extensively with finite بقدر in everyday speech.

فيني ساعدك بعد الشغل.

fīne sāʿdak baʿd esh-shoghol.

I can help you after work. (informal; first-person situational ability)

فيكي تبعتيلي العنوان هلق؟

fīke tibʿatīle l-ʿonwēn hallaʾ?

Can you send me the address now? (polite informal request to one woman)

فيهن يجوا معنا إذا بدهن.

fīhon yzho maʿna iza baddon.

They can come with us if they want. (informal; plural possibility and desire)

The masculine فيك and feminine فيكي are distinguished in spelling here as well as in pronunciation. Some informal writing omits final ي, but the guide keeps it where it makes the feminine form clear.

💡
The suffix on في identifies the person able; the following verb still agrees with the actor. In the ordinary same-subject pattern, the two person values match: فينا نروح “we can go.”

The action is an agreeing bare imperfect

The action after suffixed في has no ordinary b-/m- predication marker. “Bare” does not mean uninflected.

فيه يجي بكير، وفيها تجي بعد الشغل.

fīh yzhe bkīr, w-fīha tzhe baʿd esh-shoghol.

He can come early, and she can come after work. (informal; third-person gender contrast on the bare verb)

فينا ندفع بالكرت؟

fīna nidfaʿ bil-kart?

Can we pay by card? (polite service question; first-person plural bare verb)

فيكن تستعملوا هالغرفة للاجتماع.

fīkon tistaʿmlo hal-ghorfe lal-izhtimēʿ.

You can use this room for the meeting. (neutral/professional permission; plural verb)

Putting b- on the lower action would assert an independent ordinary predication rather than completing the modal construction.

Situational ability and available opportunity

Suffixed في often answers whether time, circumstances, rules, or physical conditions make an action possible.

هلق فيني إحكي، خلص الاجتماع.

hallaʾ fīne iḥke, khalaṣ el-izhtimēʿ.

I can talk now; the meeting is over. (informal; changed circumstance creates availability)

من هون فينا نشوف البحر.

min hōn fīna nshūf el-baḥer.

From here we can see the sea. (informal; conditions permit perception)

This tendency contrasts with بقدر, which can foreground personal capacity or successfully managing an action. It is a tendency, not a hard boundary; many contexts allow either. See Ability with قدر.

Permission and requests use question form

With first person, a question asks permission; with second person, it commonly makes a request. Intonation and لو سمحت can soften the exchange.

فيني إقعد هون؟

fīne iʾʿod hōn?

Can I sit here? (informal permission request)

فيك تفتح الشباك شوي لو سمحت؟

fīk tiftaḥ esh-shobbēk shwayy law samaḥt?

Could you open the window a little, please? (polite informal request to one man)

The grammar marks possibility; politeness comes from question form, intonation, wording, and social context—not from an English past form like could.

Negation before في means inability

Put ما before the suffixed expression: ما فيني “I can't,” ما فيها “she can't.” The lower verb remains bare.

فيني إجي عالستة.

fīne izhe ʿa-s-sitte.

I can come at six. (informal affirmative possibility)

ما فيني إجي عالستة، بعدني بالشغل.

ma fīne izhe ʿa-s-sitte, baʿdne bish-shoghol.

I can't come at six; I'll still be at work. (informal negative situational ability)

Negation inside the complement has different scope:

فيني ما إجي بكرا إذا مش ضروري.

fīne ma izhe bokra iza mish ḍarūre.

I can choose not to come tomorrow if it isn't necessary. (informal; possibility of not coming, not inability to come)

💡
Compare ما فيني إجي “I cannot come” with فيني ما إجي “I can not come / I may stay away.” Position of ما changes which proposition is negated.

Past possibility uses كان في

كان فيني places the opportunity or ability in a past frame. Context decides whether it was exercised.

كان فيني روح أبكر، بس ضليت ساعدن.

kēn fīne rūḥ abkar, bass ḍallēt sāʿedon.

I could have left earlier, but I stayed to help them. (informal; unrealized past opportunity)

وقت كنا صغار، كان فينا نلعب بالشارع لليل.

waʾet kinna zghār, kēn fīna nilʿab bish-shēriʿ lal-lēl.

When we were young, we were allowed/able to play in the street until night. (informal; past permission or possibility)

Wh-questions and short answers

The question word occupies its ordinary position; في + suffix does not require English do-support.

إمتى فيك تجي عالمكتب؟

ēmta fīk tzhe ʿa-l-maktab?

When can you come to the office? (informal question to one man)

بعد التلاتة فيني، قبلها ما فيني.

baʿd et-talēte fīne, ʾabla ma fīne.

After three I can; before that I can't. (informal short answer with omitted repeated action)

A dialogue about permission and ability

فيني إستعمل سيارتك بكرا؟

fīne istaʿmel sayyārtak bokra?

Nour: Can I use your car tomorrow? (informal permission request)

إيه، فيك، بس فيك ترجعها قبل الستة؟

ē, fīk, bass fīk trazhzhʿa ʾabel es-sitte?

Karim: Yes, you can, but can you bring it back before six? (informal dialogue; permission then request)

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong personal suffix

❌ هي فيني تجي بكرا.

Incorrect — the suffix must identify the feminine third-person subject.

✅ هي فيها تجي بكرا.

hiyye fīha tzhe bokra.

She can come tomorrow.

Keeping b- on the action

❌ فيني بساعدك.

Incorrect — suffixed في selects a bare action complement.

✅ فيني ساعدك.

fīne sāʿdak.

I can help you.

Using مش for ordinary inability

❌ مش فيني إجي اليوم.

Incorrect in the neutral Beirut baseline — inability is negated with ما before فيني.

✅ ما فيني إجي اليوم.

ma fīne izhe l-yōm.

I can't come today.

Dropping the suffix entirely

❌ في روح هلق.

Incorrect for ‘I can go now’ — bare في is existential, while ability requires a personal suffix.

✅ فيني روح هلق.

fīne rūḥ hallaʾ.

I can go now.

Key Takeaways

Suffixed في packages situational ability, available opportunity, permission, and many requests. Its suffix marks the person able; a following action is a fully agreeing bare imperfect. ما فيني means inability, while فيني ما… makes the lower proposition negative. Questions use ordinary Lebanese word order without do-support, and كان فيني places the possibility in a past frame.
