Original Dialogue: Making Plans by Phone

This original call has a specifically telephone-shaped problem: the speakers must establish that the audio works, repair a misheard day, negotiate a new time, confirm the final arrangement, and close before the unstable line drops. Written as face-to-face prose, those channel-management turns would make little sense.

The friends use ordinary urban Lebanese (informal). Scheduled b-imperfect forms present the agreed plan; رح + bare imperfect presents a prediction, new intention, or response to a possible delay.

Full dialogue

allo, marḥaba Nūr, eṣ-ṣawt wāṣel ʿindik?

Maya: Hello, hi Nour—can you hear the audio clearly? (literally, ‘is the sound reaching you?’)

ē, bass wāṭe shwayy. iḥke, shū fī?

Nour: Yes, but it's a little quiet. Go ahead—what's up?

kint ʿam basʾalik iza baʿdna mniltiʾe l-zhomʿa.

Maya: I was asking whether we're still meeting Friday.

shū? ʾilte s-sabet?

Nour: What? Did you say Saturday? (hearing repair plus candidate)

laʾ, el-zhomʿa. ana bkhalliṣ shoghol ʿal-khamse w-mniltiʾe ʿas-sitte.

Maya: No, Friday. I finish work at five, and we'll meet at six. (settled schedule)

ʿas-sitte ma fīne; raḥ kūn baʿdne biṭ-ṭarīʾ. shū raʾyik bis-sabʿa?

Nour: I can't at six; I'll still be on the road. How about seven? (refusal plus alternative)

mnēseb. raḥ iḥzhiz ṭāwle, w-inte btizhe doghre min esh-shoghol?

Maya: That works. I'll reserve a table, and you're coming straight from work?

ē, w-iza tʾakhkharet raḥ doʾʾlik.

Nour: Yes, and if I'm late, I'll call you.

tamēm. yaʿne l-zhomʿa ʿas-sabʿa bil-maḥall ille ḥkēna ʿanno?

Maya: Great. So Friday at seven at the place we talked about? (final confirmation)

maẓbūṭ. yalla, l-khaṭṭ ʿam byiʾṭaʿ. mniḥke bokra.

Nour: Exactly. All right, the line is breaking up. We'll talk tomorrow.

mēshe, bshūfik el-zhomʿa. yalla bāy.

Maya: Okay, I'll see you Friday. All right, bye. (informal closing)

Line-by-line grammar and call management

LineFormWhat it accomplishes
Answers the channel and checks audibility before launching the reason for the call.
Grants the floor and invites the business of the call; the subject “you” is implicit in احكي.
Returns to an interrupted ongoing action; بعدنا checks whether a prior arrangement still holds.
... First signals broad hearing trouble, then immediately supplies a candidate day.
5بخلص، منلتقيb-imperfect forms plus Friday and clock times frame a settled schedule.
Refuses one time without rejecting the meeting; رح predicts the travel state at six.
Repairs the plan by offering a specific alternative rather than leaving the refusal bare.
7رح احجز / بتجيNewly adopted intention takes رح; the now-agreed arrival is checked with a scheduled b-form.
A possible disruption licenses a prospective response; رح selects bare دق.
Bundles day, time, and place into one candidate understanding for ratification.
Names a current technical reason to close; Beirut production keeps b- after عم.
Both closings project future contact, preventing the ending from sounding like an abrupt hang-up.
💡
On a call, repair the channel before interpreting the content. ما عم بسمعك and الخط عم بيقطع locate the problem in transmission, while a bare sharp شو؟ can sound like disagreement.

Scheduled present versus رح

The conversation alternates two future viewpoints rather than using one “future tense” everywhere.

Scheduled b-forms describe items now placed in the shared plan:

  • بخلص شغل عالخمسة — Maya's work schedule;
  • منلتقي عالستة — the initial arrangement;
  • إنتي بتجي دغري؟ — a proposed arrival path treated as arranged;
  • بشوفك الجمعة — the settled outcome at closing.

رح + bare imperfect introduces what follows from the negotiation or a possible disruption:

  • رح كون بعدني بالطريق predicts Nour's situation at six;
  • رح احجز طاولة announces Maya's new intention after seven is accepted;
  • رح دقلك states the response if Nour is delayed.

The contrast is about discourse framing, not absolute certainty. The scheduled future page develops the same choice across timetables and arrangements.

Refusal that keeps the plan alive

عالستة ما فيني rejects the time, not the meeting. Nour immediately gives a reason and asks . English speakers sometimes translate only “I can't” and stop; in planning talk, an alternative shows continued commitment.

Maya's مناسب accepts the new proposal. The final يعني...؟ then reopens the whole package only for confirmation, not negotiation. Nour's مظبوط closes that sequence.

Repair after mishearing

Line 4 is layered repair: شو؟ announces trouble, and قلت السبت؟ offers what Nour thinks she heard. Maya corrects only the day: لأ، الجمعة. She does not repeat the entire phone opening.

If the whole prior turn is unavailable, a more explicit alternative is:

عفوا، ما عم بسمعك منيح. فيكي تعيدي الجملة؟

ʿafwan, ma ʿam bismaʿik mnīḥ. fīke tʿīde l-zhomle?

Sorry, I can't hear you well. Can you repeat the sentence? (to one woman)

If only the day is uncertain, targeted repair remains more efficient:

عالجمعة، مش عالسبت؟

ʿal-zhomʿa, mish ʿas-sabet?

On Friday, not Saturday? (targeted confirmation)

The conversation-repair guide explains the scale from broad شو؟ to narrow repeated constituents.

Closing a voice call

The sequence يلا + reason + future contact prepares both people for the end. Nour names the broken signal, then says منحكي بكرا. Maya accepts and repeats the socially relevant next meeting before باي, an ordinary contact form (informal, English-contact).

No one needs to say “I am now ending the call.” The paired turns make the closure jointly recognizable.

Follow-up transformation task

Start with a settled calendar arrangement:

الخميس بخلص عالخمسة ومنلتقي عالستة.

el-khamīs bkhalliṣ ʿal-khamse w-mniltiʾe ʿas-sitte.

Thursday I finish at five, and we'll meet at six. (settled arrangement)

Now make the finishing time uncertain and postpone fixing the meeting time. The predicted event takes رح + bare imperfect:

يمكن الخميس رح خلص متأخر، فخلينا نحكي قبل ما نحدد الوقت.

yimken el-khamīs raḥ khalliṣ mtʾakhkhar, f-khallīna niḥke ʾabel ma nḥadded el-waʾet.

I may finish late Thursday, so let's talk before we set the time. (prediction, not a settled schedule)

For a second transformation, change الجمعة عالسبعة to a new day and time, then build a mishearing turn that contrasts the old and new day.

What this dialogue recycles

  • Phone opening ألو and channel language from phone calls.
  • Beirut progressive عم + b-imperfect in كنت عم بسألك and عم بيقطع.
  • Scheduled b-imperfect versus رح + bare imperfect.
؟, refusal ما فيني, and alternative proposal.
  • Broad repair, candidate understanding, final confirmation, and paired closing.

Common Mistakes

Keeping b- after رح

Incorrect in the Beirut baseline — رح selects a bare imperfect.

raḥ iḥzhiz ṭāwle b-ism Nūr ʾabel ma nōṣal.

I'll reserve a table in Nour's name before we arrive.

Using عم for a future arrangement

Incorrect for a simple scheduled meeting — عم presents an event as unfolding.

bokra mniltiʾe ʿas-sabʿa ʿind madkhal es-sīnema.

Tomorrow we're meeting at seven by the cinema entrance.

Repeating everything when one day is unclear

Needlessly broad when only the day was uncertain.

ʾilte t-tlēta walla ʿat-tlēte?

Did you say Tuesday or at three o'clock? (targeting an acoustically similar contrast)

Describing a completed hang-up while still on the call

Incorrect as a live-call closing — the perfect says that the speaker has already hung up while still speaking.

tamēm, thabbatna l-mawʿed. yalla mniḥke bokra, bāy.

Great, we've confirmed the appointment. All right, we'll talk tomorrow—bye.

Key Takeaways

A phone plan is jointly built: establish the channel, identify the existing arrangement, repair the smallest misheard item, reject an unsuitable time while preserving the meeting, and confirm day, time, and place. Scheduled b-forms treat the plan as current; رح introduces predictions and new prospective actions. A reason plus projected future contact makes the closing recognizable to both callers.
