Beim alten türkischen Wort bedeutet „oğul“ „Kind oder Sohn, der dasselbe Blut hat“. Danach wurde es zu „oğulan“, der Pluralform von „oğul“ in der persischen Sprache. Das Wort „oğulan“ hatte keine Geschlechtsdefinition, wurde aber mit der Zeit zu „männliches Kind“ und wir Türken verwendeten als „oğlan“ das Wort im Singular und nicht im Plural.
