	The story of Abraham, called Ibrahim, within Islam is an important one. Not only was he a monotheist at a time when his people had embraced polytheism and begun to worship various idols, but according to Islamic tradition, he was the first person to settle in what later became the city of <OpenstaxTerm>Mecca</OpenstaxTerm>. <OpenstaxTerm>Abraham</OpenstaxTerm> arrived there with his servant and concubine Hagar and their son Ishmael. There he constructed the <OpenstaxTerm>Kaaba</OpenstaxTerm>, considered by Muslims to be the house of God and the most sacred site in Islam.

	Muslims believe that as generations passed, however, the descendants of Ishmael, the <OpenstaxTerm>Arabs</OpenstaxTerm>, forgot their monotheism and began to worship idols, entering a period of ignorance known as the <OpenstaxEm>jahiliyyah</OpenstaxEm>. There they remained until God sent a new prophet, Muhammad, to correct their religious practices and deliver them from ignorance and disbelief. This lapse and deliverance, according to the faithful, is the story of Islam.
