Questions & Answers about Lamba yatağın üstünde.
Why does yatak become yatağın here?
To say something is "on" or "above" an object in Turkish, you literally say it is at that object's "top space". This requires a possessive relationship. yatağın is the genitive (possessive) form of yatak (bed), meaning "the bed's". Also, notice that the k at the end of yatak changes to a soft g (ğ) because we added a suffix starting with a vowel (-ın).
How exactly is the word üstünde built?
It is made of three parts: üst (top) + ü (possessive suffix meaning "its") + de (locative suffix meaning "at"). Whenever we attach a location suffix like -de to a possessive suffix like -ü, we have to insert the buffer letter n between them. This gives us üstünde (literally "at its top").
Does üstünde mean "on" or "above"?
It can mean both! Turkish uses üstünde for anything occupying the space over an object, whether it is physically touching it (on) or hovering over it (above). In this sentence, a lamp is usually hanging "above" the bed, but if you put a book "on" the bed, you would also use yatağın üstünde.
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
There isn't one! In Turkish, when you are stating a simple fact in the present tense (like "The lamp is above the bed"), the "to be" verb is usually implied. The sentence literally translates to "Lamp bed's its-top-at", and the word "is" is naturally understood by the listener.
