Questions & Answers about Beşik için boyamanız gereken neresi?
How does the grammar of boyamanız gereken work here?
To say "that you must paint", Turkish uses the verbal noun suffix -mA followed by a possessive ending to show who must do the action. Here, boyama (painting) gets the -nız (your) ending to become boyamanız (your painting). Followed by gereken (that is necessary), the phrase literally translates to "that is necessary for your painting".
Where is the noun that boyamanız gereken is supposed to modify?
In this sentence, the relative clause modifies the question word itself: neresi (what place / which part). You could also add an explicit noun and say boyamanız gereken yer neresi? (where is the place that you must paint?), but omitting the word yer is very natural and common in Turkish.
Why use neresi instead of just asking nerede (where)?
Nerede means "at where" and is used for location. Here, you aren't asking for the location where the painting event is happening. You are asking which specific physical part of the crib is receiving the paint. Neresi acts as a noun meaning "what place" or "which part", making it the perfect target for the action.
Why is beşik için placed at the very beginning of the sentence?
