Questions & Answers about Tüyleri kızıl, gagası sivri kuşlar çok nadir türlerdir.

How do tüyleri kızıl and gagası sivri work grammatically to mean "red-feathered" and "sharp-beaked"?

This is a possessive compound adjective. You take a noun, add the 3rd person possessive suffix (like -i for tüyleri and -sı for gagası), and follow it with an adjective. Literally, they mean "its-feathers red" and "its-beak sharp." When placed before the main noun (kuşlar), they act as a single adjective unit describing the birds.

Why is tüyleri plural but gagası singular?

This construction reflects the natural logic of the body parts. A single bird has many feathers, so tüy takes the plural suffix -ler before the possessive -i. Since a bird has only one beak, gaga remains singular before taking the possessive -sı.

Could I say kızıl tüylü and sivri gagalı instead?

Yes, you can! Using the -lI suffix (meaning "with" or "having") is the other common way to form these descriptions. Kızıl tüylü and tüyleri kızıl mean the exact same thing, but the possessive pattern used in this sentence often sounds a bit more literary, descriptive, or formal.

What is the purpose of the -dir suffix at the end of türlerdir?
