When describing physical traits in English, we often use hyphenated compound adjectives like "red-breasted" or "sharp-taloned." Turkish does this beautifully and logically by pairing a noun with a possessive suffix, followed by an adjective. In this lesson, we will use this unique structure to describe the distinct features of rare birds.
The Possessive Compound Adjective
To create these descriptive structures in Turkish, we use a simple formula: Noun + 3rd Person Possessive + Adjective.
Literally, you are saying "its [noun] [adjective]". For example, instead of "red-breasted," Turkish phrasing translates to "its-breast red" (göğsü kızıl). This entire phrase then acts as an adjective modifying a subject, such as a bird.
Depending on the noun, the 3rd person possessive suffix follows standard four-way vowel harmony:
- Words ending in a consonant take -ı, -i, -u, or -ü (e.g., göğüs becomes göğsü — notice the vowel drop!).
- Words ending in a vowel take -sı, -si, -su, or -sü (e.g., gaga becomes gagası).
| The red-breasted birds must be flying in the tropical forest. | Göğsü kızıl kuşlar tropikal ormanda uçuyor olmalı. |
| The island where they live is very safe for the hook-beaked parrots. | Gagası kıvrık papağanlar için yaşadıkları ada çok güvenli. |
Plural Traits
If the physical trait naturally occurs in plurals—like feathers (tüyler) or wings (kanatlar)—you simply attach the plural and 3rd person possessive suffixes (-ları or -leri) to the noun before adding the adjective.
For example, tüy (feather) becomes tüyleri parlak (shiny-feathered), and kanat (wing) becomes kanatları geniş (broad-winged).
| The shiny-feathered owl looks very majestic because it opens its wings. | Tüyleri parlak baykuş, kanatlarını açtığı için çok görkemli görünüyor. |
| The broad-winged eagle suddenly disappeared in the sky. | Kanatları geniş kartal aniden gökyüzünde kayboldu. |
Stacking Multiple Descriptions
These compound adjectives are highly flexible. You can easily stack them to give a detailed, vivid description of an animal. Just separate the different possessive adjective phrases with a comma before stating the noun they modify.
| The shiny-feathered, hook-beaked parrot is very cute. | Tüyleri parlak, gagası kıvrık papağan çok sevimli. |
| Red-feathered, sharp-beaked birds are very rare species. | Tüyleri kızıl, gagası sivri kuşlar çok nadir türlerdir. |
