Questions & Answers about Yapımcılar eleştirmenleri özel gösterime davet edebilirlerdi.
How does the ending on davet edebilirlerdi give us the meaning "could have invited"?
To express a counterfactual past ability (something someone could have done, but didn't), Turkish combines the ability suffix -ebil, the aorist (broad time) suffix -ir, and the past tense suffix -di. Here, the helper verb in davet etmek (to invite) changes its t to a d, giving us davet edebilir. Adding the plural -ler and past -di gives us davet edebilirlerdi.
Could the plural suffix -ler go at the very end, making it davet edebilirdiler?
Yes, both davet edebilirlerdi and davet edebilirdiler are grammatically correct and mean the exact same thing. Putting the plural suffix before the past tense suffix (-lerdi) is generally more common in everyday Turkish, but you will hear both forms.
Why does eleştirmenleri have that final -i?
The verb davet etmek (to invite) takes a direct object. Because the producers are inviting specific, known people (the critics), we need the definite accusative case. The word is built as eleştirmen (critic) + -ler (plural) + -i (accusative suffix).
What is the root of the word gösterime and how is it formed?
