Questions & Answers about Dördüncü soruyu çözdüm.
Why is it dördüncü instead of dörtüncü?
The word for "four" is dört. When we add the ordinal suffix -üncü (meaning "fourth"), the word gets a vowel right after the t. In Turkish, when a word ends in t and takes a vowel suffix, the t usually softens to a d. This is why it becomes dördüncü.
Why does soru have the -yu ending here?
The base word is soru (question). The -u at the very end is the accusative case suffix, which marks it as the specific direct object of the verb because you solved a specific question ("the fourth question"). Since soru ends in a vowel, we need the buffer consonant -y- in between to link the vowels, making it soruyu.
How does the verb çözdüm break down?
It is built from the verb root çöz- (to solve). To this, we add the past tense suffix -dü (using a ü to follow vowel harmony with the ö in the root). Finally, the -m is the personal suffix for "I".
