Questions & Answers about Yorumların çoğu olumluydu.
Why does çok become çoğu here?
In English, we say 'most of the reviews'. Turkish handles this with a genitive-possessive pair: yorumların (of the reviews) + çok (most) + -u (possessive suffix). When we add the vowel suffix -u to çok, the k softens to ğ due to consonant mutation, giving us çoğu.
The reviews are plural, so why is the verb singular (olumluydu) instead of plural (olumluydular)?
Two rules overlap here. First, non-human plural subjects in Turkish generally take singular verbs. Second, the grammatical head of the subject is çoğu (the majority), which functions as a singular unit.
Why is there a -y- in olumluydu?
The word olumlu (positive) ends in a vowel. The past tense suffix was historically a separate word (idi). When it attaches to a vowel-ending word as a suffix, its first letter becomes the buffer -y-. So, olumlu idi smoothly becomes olumluydu.
How would I say 'because of most of the reviews' using this lesson's postposition (dolayı)?
