Questions & Answers about İlerledikçe küflenmiş tavanları ve solmuş tabloları gördük.
How do küflenmiş and solmuş work as adjectives here?
They use the -mIş suffix to turn verbs into adjectives that describe a completed action (a past participle). Küflenmek is to get moldy, making küflenmiş mean moldy (having gotten moldy). Solmak is to fade, making solmuş mean faded.
Could I use soldu instead of solmuş?
No, because soldu is a conjugated past tense verb (it faded). To describe the noun tablo (painting), you need an adjective. The -mIş suffix transforms the verb into a descriptive word placed right before the noun, exactly like faded paintings in English.
What does the suffix on ilerledikçe do?
The -dikçe suffix means as or the more an action happens. Here, it is attached to ilerlemek (to advance), so ilerledikçe translates to as we advanced or the further we went.
Why is there an -ı at the end of tavanları and tabloları?
That is the accusative case suffix, which marks specific direct objects. We are not just seeing ceilings and paintings in general; we are seeing the specific moldy ceilings and faded paintings in that place, so they need the accusative ending before the verb gördük (we saw).
