Why does the verb translate to "sitting" when girmek usually means "to enter"?
In Turkish, the standard phrase for "taking" or "sitting" an exam is sınava girmek (literally "to enter the exam"). You cannot use words like "take" (almak) for this action.
Why is there an -a on the end of sınav?
The verb girmek ("to enter") requires the destination to have the dative case ending, which acts like "to" or "into" in English. Following vowel harmony rules, sınav takes the -a ending to become sınava.
How exactly is the verb giriyoruz formed?
It starts with the root gir- (enter). Then we add the present continuous tense marker -iyor (which acts like the English "-ing"), and finally the "we" personal ending -uz. Together, gir-iyor-uz makes "we are entering".
Why isn't the word "we" (biz) in the Turkish sentence?
Turkish often drops subject pronouns like biz (we) because the verb ending already tells you who is doing the action. The -uz ending on giriyoruz makes it clear that "we" are taking the exam, so adding biz at the start is only needed for extra emphasis.
