Questions & Answers about Öğretmeni ziyaret ediyoruz.
Why is there an "-i" at the end of öğretmeni?
The -i is the specific direct object suffix (also called the accusative case). Because we are visiting a specific teacher (translated as 'the' teacher), we add -i to öğretmen. If we were just visiting any teacher in general, we would use the plain word öğretmen.
Why are there two words (ziyaret ediyoruz) for 'visiting'?
In Turkish, many verbs are made by combining a noun with a helper verb like etmek (to do). Ziyaret means 'a visit', so ziyaret etmek literally means 'to do a visit'.
The dictionary form of the helper verb is etmek. Why does the 't' change to a 'd' in ediyoruz?
This is due to a rule called consonant mutation. When the root et- gets a suffix that starts with a vowel (like the present continuous -iyor), the hard 't' softens to a 'd' to make pronunciation smoother.
This lesson is about ne zaman (when). Where would I put it to ask 'When are we visiting the teacher?'
In Turkish, question words usually go right before the verb. To turn this into a question, you would say: Öğretmeni ne zaman ziyaret ediyoruz?
