Questions & Answers about Aslan, vahşi bir hayvandır.
What does the -dır suffix in hayvandır do? Doesn't the sentence already mean "is" without it?
Yes, you could just say Aslan vahşi bir hayvan and it would still mean "The lion is a wild animal." However, the -dır suffix is used here to state an objective fact or a universal truth. You will often see it in encyclopedias, news, or scientific statements to show that something is an established fact.
Why is the word order vahşi bir hayvan instead of bir vahşi hayvan?
The English translation says "The lion," but there is no specific word for "the" or a plural suffix on Aslan. How do we know it means all lions?
In Turkish, a singular noun used without any articles at the beginning of a sentence often represents an entire species or category. Here, Aslan stands for the concept of a lion or lions in general. This pairs perfectly with the factual -dır suffix at the end of the sentence to make a generalized statement about the whole species.
Why is there a comma after Aslan?
Turkish frequently uses a comma right after the subject of a sentence to make it perfectly clear what the topic is. While not strictly mandatory in a short sentence like this, placing a comma after the subject is a very common punctuation rule in Turkish writing to prevent any reading ambiguity.
