Questions & Answers about İtfaiyeci çatıya ulaşabildi.
How does ulaşabildi break down to mean "managed to reach"?
It starts with the verb root ulaş (to reach). Then we add the ability suffix -abil (able to), and finally the past tense suffix -di. Together, ulaşabildi means "was able to reach" or "managed to reach" a specific target in the past.
Why did we use -abil instead of -ebil in ulaşabildi?
The ability suffix follows vowel harmony based on the last vowel of the verb root. The root ulaş has the back vowel "a", so we use the back vowel version -abil. If the root had a front vowel, like in gelmek (to come), it would be gelebildi.
Why does the word for roof, çatı, have -ya added to the end of it?
In English, we just "reach the roof", but in Turkish, the verb ulaşmak (to reach) requires the dative case, meaning you reach "to" a destination. Since çatı ends in a vowel, we need the buffer letter -y- before adding the dative suffix -a, making it çatıya.
I recognize the suffix -ci in itfaiyeci. What is the root word here?
