Questions & Answers about Sunumu hazırlamaya gönüllüyüz.
Why does the sentence use hazırlamaya instead of the dictionary form hazırlamak?
In English we say 'willing to prepare', but in Turkish, the word gönüllü (willing) requires the dative case for the action you are willing to do. To add the dative case to a verb, we first make it a verbal noun by dropping the -k from hazırlamak to get hazırlama (preparing). Then we add the buffer -y- and the dative ending -a, creating hazırlamaya (literally 'to the preparing').
Why does this sentence use -maya instead of -meye for the verbal noun ending?
We choose between -maya and -meye based on vowel harmony. The last vowel in the verb root hazırla is a, which is a back vowel. Therefore, we use the back vowel versions of the suffixes, giving us hazırlamaya. If the verb was yüzmek (to swim), the front vowels would make it yüzmeye.
Why is it sunumu and not just sunum?
Because you are preparing a specific presentation, it needs the specific direct object (accusative) ending. Sunum (presentation) gets the -u suffix to become sunumu. Even though hazırlamaya has been turned into a noun to connect to gönüllü, it still acts like a verb for the word right in front of it and takes a direct object!
