Questions & Answers about Günaydın çocuklar!
"Günaydın" means "good morning", but doesn't "gün" mean "day"?
Yes! Gün means "day" and aydın means "bright" or "clear". So when you say Günaydın, you are literally wishing someone a "bright day"!
Since sabah means "morning", why don't we say İyi sabahlar?
While you can technically say İyi sabahlar (Good mornings), Günaydın is the standard and most natural way to say "Good morning" in Turkish. Just like "İyi geceler" (Good night), some greetings are just set phrases you will need to memorize.
Why does çocuklar use the -lar suffix instead of -ler for the plural?
Turkish uses a rule called vowel harmony to choose the right plural ending. If the last vowel of the word is a, ı, o, or u, you add -lar. Since the last vowel in çocuk is u, it becomes çocuklar.
How do I pronounce the ç and c in çocuklar?
The letter ç with a little tail sounds like the "ch" in the English word "child", while the plain c sounds like the "j" in "jump". So çocuklar is pronounced a lot like "cho-juk-lar".
