Questions & Answers about Selam! Ben öğrenciyim.
Why is there a y in the middle of öğrenciyim?
It acts as a bridge or buffer. In Turkish, when a word ends in a vowel like öğrenci (student) and you want to add a suffix that also starts with a vowel, like the 'I am' suffix -im, you insert a y between them to make it easier to pronounce.
How does the word öğrenci become 'I am a student'?
Turkish doesn't use a separate verb for 'am', 'is', or 'are' in simple sentences. Instead, you attach a personal suffix to the end of a noun or adjective. Here, the -im at the end of öğrenciyim is the personal suffix that means 'I am'.
If öğrenciyim already means 'I am a student', why is the word ben (I) used?
Using ben is actually optional! Because the suffix -im already tells us who the subject is, you can simply say Öğrenciyim. Including ben just adds a little extra emphasis, similar to saying 'As for me, I am a student'.
Is selam used the same way as merhaba?
They both mean hello, but selam is more casual, much like 'hi' or 'hey' in English. You would use it with friends or in informal settings, whereas merhaba is a slightly more formal, everyday 'hello' that is safe to use with anyone.
