Questions & Answers about Duş alıyorum ve hazırlanıyorum.
Why do we use alıyorum with duş?
In Turkish, showering is expressed with a compound verb: duş (shower) plus almak (to take). Just like in English, you literally say 'I am taking a shower'.
How do we get alıyorum from the verb almak?
First, drop the -mak from almak to get the root al-. To show an ongoing action, we add the present continuous ending -ıyor. Because al- ends in a consonant and has an a vowel, Turkish vowel harmony uses the matching vowel ı to connect them, making alıyor. Finally, add the personal ending -um for 'I', resulting in alıyorum (I am taking).
What is the base word of hazırlanıyorum?
The root is the adjective hazır, which means 'ready'. With a special suffix, it becomes the verb hazırlanmak (to get oneself ready). To say 'I am getting ready', we drop the -mak and add -ıyorum, giving us hazırlanıyorum.
Since both actions are happening right now, do I have to put -ıyorum on both verbs?
Yes. When you connect two verbs with ve (and) in Turkish, you generally need to fully conjugate both of them. You cannot just attach the ending to the last verb; you must attach the 'I am doing' endings to both actions.
