Questions & Answers about Gece çalışıyorum.
Why doesn't gece have a suffix to mean "at" night?
In English, we say "at night" or "in the morning", but in Turkish, general time words like gece (night), sabah (morning), and akşam (evening) usually don't need a location suffix like -de or -da. You just use the plain word.
How would I ask "When are you working?" to get this answer?
You would use the question phrase ne zaman (when). In Turkish, question words often sit in the exact same spot as the answer they are replacing. So you replace gece with ne zaman and change the verb to the "you" form: Ne zaman çalışıyorsun?.
What are the parts of the verb çalışıyorum?
It starts with the root çalış- (work). Then we add -ıyor, which is the present continuous suffix (like "-ing" in English). Finally, -um is the personal suffix for "I". Put together, it means "I am working".
Can this also mean "I work at night" as a general routine?
Yes! Even though the -ıyor suffix technically means "am doing" right now, Turkish speakers frequently use it for general routines and habits, just like the English simple present tense.
