How exactly is the word elinden built?
It starts with the root el (hand). Then we add -i (her, 3rd person possessive). Because we want to add the ablative or "from" suffix -den, we must insert the buffer letter -n-. So it becomes el + -i + -n- + -den.
Why do we need the buffer letter -n- here? Can't we just say eliden?
In Turkish, whenever you add a case suffix (like to, in, or from) right after a 3rd person possessive suffix (his, her, its, or their), you must use the buffer letter -n- to connect them. So, eli (her hand) + -den (from) becomes elinden, not eliden.
Wait, couldn't elinden also mean "from your hand"?
Yes, it absolutely could! If you say "your hand", the word is elin (el + -in). Adding -den makes it elinden. Because of this, elinden looks exactly the same whether it means "from her hand" or "from your hand". You just rely on the context of the conversation to know which one it is.
