Questions & Answers about Bebek düşüyor!
How do we build düşüyor from the dictionary verb?
The verb root is düş- (to fall). Since it ends in a consonant, we must add a linking vowel before the present continuous suffix -yor. Because the vowel in the root is ü, 4-way vowel harmony tells us to use ü as the link. This gives us düşüyor!
Why is the suffix -yor and not -yör to match the ü?
The present continuous suffix -yor is a special exception in Turkish. The o in -yor never changes to fit vowel harmony. Only the connecting vowel right before it changes (like the ü in düşüyor).
Where is the word for "the" in this sentence?
Turkish does not have a definite article like "the". The word bebek can mean "baby", "a baby", or "the baby" depending on the context. Here, because we are talking about a specific event happening right now, it translates as "the baby".
Why isn't there a personal ending attached to düşüyor?
In Turkish, the third-person singular (he, she, or it) takes no personal suffix. The word düşüyor on its own means "he, she, or it is falling." Adding bebek simply clarifies exactly who is falling.
