Questions & Answers about Genç adam otobüste.
Why does the word for "on the bus" end in -te instead of -de?
This is because of consonant assimilation! The word otobüs ends in s, which is a voiceless (or "hard") consonant. In Turkish, when you attach a suffix that normally starts with d to a word ending in a voiceless consonant, the d changes to a t to make it easier to pronounce. So, the location suffix -de becomes -te.
How did we know to use -te instead of -ta?
This is a quick vowel harmony refresher. We look at the last vowel in otobüs, which is ü. Because ü is a front vowel, the suffix must also use a front vowel. Between a (back) and e (front), we choose e, giving us -te.
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
There isn't one! In simple descriptive sentences like this, Turkish doesn't use a separate verb for "is" or "are". By simply putting the subject (genç adam) and the location (otobüste) together, the "is" is automatically understood.
Is the word order for genç adam the same as it is in English?
