Questions & Answers about Şu kapı açık değil.
Why does değil come at the very end of the sentence?
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
There isn't one! In Turkish, the "to be" verb (am/is/are) is often added as a personal suffix to the end of a sentence. However, for the third person ("he/she/it"), there is usually no suffix at all. So, açık değil directly translates as "open not", but it naturally means "is not open".
Why use Şu for "That" instead of O?
Both şu and o can mean "that". However, şu is used when you are pointing at something specific or bringing the listener's attention to it (like a door right in front of you). O is used for things that are much further away, or things that are completely out of sight.
Wait, is açık an adjective or a verb here?
Açık is an adjective describing the state of being "open". Because it is an adjective, we must use değil to say "is not open". If it were an action verb (like saying "the door didn't open"), we would use a negative suffix attached directly to the verb itself, rather than using the separate word değil.
