Questions & Answers about Siz hazırsınız.
What does the suffix -sınız do at the end of hazır?
It is the "to be" ending for Siz (you plural or formal). While English uses a separate word ("are"), Turkish attaches a suffix to the noun or adjective. So, hazır means "ready", and adding -sınız makes it "you are ready".
Why is the suffix spelled -sınız here and not -siniz?
It changes based on 4-way vowel harmony. Look at the last vowel in hazır, which is the undotted ı. According to vowel harmony rules, an ı or a is followed by another ı. Therefore, the ending is -sınız. If the word had ended with an e or i (like öğrenci), the suffix would be -siniz.
Does Siz mean "you" as a plural, or "you" as a formal singular?
It can be either! In Turkish, Siz is used when talking to a group of people (plural), but it is also used as a polite, formal way to address just one person (like a teacher, a boss, or a stranger). The suffix -sınız matches both uses, so you rely on context to know which one it is.
Since the ending -sınız already means "you are", is the word Siz required?
No, it is optional. You can just say Hazırsınız and it perfectly means "You are ready." Including Siz at the beginning just adds a bit of emphasis, as if you are saying "As for you, you are ready."
