Questions & Answers about Hazırız.
Where is the word for "we" in this sentence?
In Turkish, the "we are" part is attached right to the end of the describing word. The suffix -ız means "we are." Because the suffix already tells us exactly who is ready, the pronoun biz (we) can be left out, which is very common in Turkish.
The lesson shows the suffix for "we are" as -(y)Iz. Why isn't there a y in Hazırız?
The y is a "buffer" letter. It is only used when the root word ends in a vowel, to stop two vowels from crashing together (for example, iyi + yiz = iyiyiz). Since hazır ends in the consonant r, we don't need the buffer y, so we just attach -ız directly.
Why is the suffix exactly -ız and not -iz?
This happens because of 4-way vowel harmony. The vowel in the suffix has to match the last vowel of the root word. The last vowel in hazır is the undotted ı, so the suffix also takes an ı, making it -ız.
Is it wrong to say Biz hazırız?
No, it's perfectly correct! Saying Biz hazırız just adds a little more emphasis to the "we" part, similar to saying "We are the ones who are ready." But in everyday conversations, just saying Hazırız is much more common.
